00 - THE PURSUIT - Interlude Opportunity

Post by Ndreare »

Interlude Opportunity

Here is an opportunity for you to earn a Conviction before the game starts. Listed below is the crew of your crew's biggest rivals as Bounty Hunters. They are some fellow heavy hitters about the same strength and power of your team, and tend to take the same type of jobs. This means you occasionally come across each other in competition. While you have beat them and they have beat you. The victories are always frustrating and Pyrrhic.

Write up a story of you encountering the crew of The Pursuit and how it ended in a Pyrrhic manor for either you or them. When done you may take a Conviction. If you story includes how they got the upper hand over you without the Pyrrhic price then you also gain a regular benny.

The Pursuit - (Corsair w/+4 MODs 2 speed and 2 Handling)
Special Setting Rule: When dealing with the Pursuit the "Heroes Never Die" setting rule is in effect.

Nemesis (Captain) - A temporal mage and vicious woman in general. Nemesis leads the team and hates it when others interfere is a good bounty. While Nemesis generally encourages her team to avoid outright murder, she is not above sabotage or setting enemies up for arrest. She has a reputation known to have never broken a contract.
OOC Comments
Use Lich + Shifter. Nemesis has an amazing arsenal of specialized gear and equipment, that varies from one encounter to another, this is a great way for players to escape with her toys.
Useful Idiots: Nemisis uses the Fanatics setting rule.
Nemisis.jpg
Royce (Second) - A charmer and master communicator Royce is an elf with a gift like no other. While rumored to be a competent soldier Royce hates fighting and finds it distasteful. Normally while the rest of the team is on a mission he will be back at the ship working on other problems or even just taking it easy.
OOC Comments
Use Vagabond, add all social edges, Persuasion d12+2 and Intimidation d12+2.
Royce.jpg
Royce.jpg (13.39 KiB) Viewed 7706 times
Grudge (Security Officer) - No one knows where grudge comes from or how he gained his abilities. But he appears to be an unkillable brute with a passion for breaking things and people. Psionic and Magic energy simply roll off of his body, and his brute strength is the match for a Repobot. Often toying with his opponents before finishing a battle Grudge is simply one scary thug.
OOC Comments
Use Golem stats, but rise Strength and Vigor (thus toughness) by 1 die type each time he resist an arcane effect.
Grudge.jpg
Hiesh (Tactical Officer) - Hiesh is one of the most skilled bounty hunters in the three galaxies. With the ability to telekinetically manipulate the world around him and create illusions so complex and lifelike they can kill knowing Hiesh is your tail is enough that more than one contract has turned themselves in rather than fight him.
OOC Comments
Use Night Prince stats, add TK at will.
Stupid picture will not load. Search for Genji Night Armor on Google
Iasah (Independent) - Iasah is a sort of independent agent who works with the team more so than for Nemesis. She deliberately avoids answering questions about herself and has on more than one occasion let a enemy escape for no apparent reason.
OOC Comments
Demi-god, use adult dragon stats.
Iasah.JPG
Iasah.JPG (37.66 KiB) Viewed 7707 times
Slip (Pilot) - Considered by many to be the second best pilot on Phaseworld Slip is a partial conversion cyborg with a purpose. Her addiction to pushing vehicles to their limit is renowned and she is known to be addicted to risk taking often getting more out of a machine than people think is possible. Unfortunately her addiction to gambling is equally well known and she has more than a few times required support from her friends to get her out of trouble.
OOC Comments
Use MARS Techno Warrior, with Master (piloting), Veicle Interface +2, Ace, Combat Ace, Expert/Professional/Master (Piloting). Total Piloting d12+8. Receives a free reroll on all piloting rolls (including to soak).
Slip.jpg
The Centenarian (Soldier & Contracts) - Nemesis will often hire out additional mercenaries when needed to ensure a job goes her way. Normally this is limited to the people needed to operate and pilot the Pursuit, but when things get thick she is not above putting in the extra credits to make sure they escape alive.
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

Boon’s Interlude

An Inauspicious Pyrrhic Gone Egregious: for Conviction and a bennie.

  • Last Days in the CAF…
Consortium Naval Commander Jance Vetter frowned down at the CAF Commando. The interrogation room was warm. Uncomfortably so. He sat. Looking across the room at the dark skinned man who had been an impressive commando officer, Vetter sighed.

“You were born on one of the Utopia worlds. Rich. Had everything. Got bored. Left. Joined the CAF as an officer, you were well schooled and you enjoyed a good career. Commendable.

Six years and already a Captain. Your platoon was sent to prevent a mass extermination of several insectoid inhabited worlds. This is a war. You were extremely close to the Forge of the Cosmos. Fighting happened. Only four of 388 CAF men and women surviving.

Your crew were nearly killed to a man by the TE. Three survivors other than you and they are all three now Cosmo Knights. None of the three have bothered to talk to us. All we have is the one that didn’t qualify to be a Knight. You.

Tell me Mace Ferric, Boondoggle, why did the Forge not make you a Knight?”

Boon sat quietly. He’d already tried explaining he had been offered the power and curse of becoming a Knight but had turned it down. They simply didn’t believe him.

Didn’t matter who they sent to ask. Boon’s answer was the same. He’d turned it down.

——
  • That period of time you just don’t know what to do with your life…
Six months later, decommissioned and let go, Boon arrived in Center. He walked out with his gear, armor and weapons. It was obvious the MPs had been daunted by his demeanor. One had asked him to stop and turn in the gear etc. None had the brass balls to force him. At this point everyone in the CAF knew he’d not become a Knight but also knew he’d been altered.

The old soiled apartment he rented was in a crappy part of Center.

Boon had spent the last week holed up in the little room with attached bathroom. It was an extremely distasteful place, especially compared to his home world. Even tight crew quarters on CAF ships were way better than the shit-shack he’d rented.

Only opening the door when Robo-Delivery showed up with food or booze Boon hadn’t showered in days.

Then the deleterious shindig occurred.

The greasy Robo-Delivery bot knocked on the rooms door. Boon finished wrapping up the CAF metals and paraphernalia of his career days as a Commando and tossed it all in the small shoe box. Striding over to the door he opened it, paid, and took the food over to the bed to eat. The flyer taped to the food bento box was loud.

Loud in both color and the micro built in speaker was chanting.

”Neon Chrome’s Shindig!! Come!! Girls, booze, tapas, dancing to the best techno-grunge in Center!! Tonight our special gambling rooms are half price to enter!!”

It repeated over and over. Crumpling it in his hand stopped it.

After finishing the first bite of yet another shitty delivery meal Boon tossed the rest of the food in the trash. Picking up the flyer he smoothed it out on the tiny desk.

The Shindig.

Fuck it.

——
  • The encounter with… her.
The shower had helped. He’d ordered expensive cloths over the net, paid for same hour delivery and now, walking with purpose, he arrived at the front of the Shindig looking pretty pimp.

“Well damn…”

“What’s wrong tall dark and handsome?”

Looking to his right he saw … her. Lithe, lascivious, short dark hair, almond eyes and facial cyberware, all wrapped up in a black, red and gold dress that accentuated every delicious curve.

His grin spread across his face and Boon took in a deep breath feeling like it was his first in a long time.

“The line. I’ll likely perish from hunger before I can get into the Shindig to eat and play some games. Uh, hi. My name is Bo… mmm Mace.”

She laughed and shivers ran down his back.

“Bommace? Hello. I’m Slip.”

——
  • Four hours later… in the gambling halls of the Shindig…
They’d got in instantly. Apparently Slip was a pretty big deal. Some amazing pilot and probably more important to the establishment she was a frequent flyer here in the gambling halls. As her plus one they’d let him in free not charging him any cover charge. They hit the tapas, little plates of delicious exotic food and had a flight of Meade from the UWW. Boon had considered offering to dance after they finished up eating and talking. Slip had dominated the conversation and he found her enthralling. He rejected the idea of dancing until later. She obviously was jonesing to get to the gambling area.

Thirty great minutes of food and conversation led to them hitting the tables to toss credits around. Hours later they ended up at the same table playing Thraxas poker. The table had started with eight players. After several hours they were down to four left and a very substantial amount of universal credits up for grabs.

The wolfen folded, the Noro pushed out a raise. Slip was considering her options. Boon was enjoying himself but had a sinking feeling that he was going to lose every last cred to his name. He was in far deeper than he should be. If he matched the Noro’s raise and lost he’d be out of the game and dead broke.

“Don’t quit on me now handsome.”

Her voice pushed all thought of folding out of his mind. Hell, even if he ended up dead broke he’d likely get to see her again and that made it worth it. Maybe he could sign on with her crew and ship.

He pushed his last credits across the table matching the raise.

Her face looked pleased and he missed the hand she held out at first. The Wolfen laughed. The Noro slammed his fist on the table in anger. The table jolted. Several cards fell out of Slips sleeve. Apparently the poofy endings of the otherwise tight sleeves were more than just for fashion, they’d been where she was hiding cards too.

“Cheater!”

Both the Wolfen and Noro, and several onlookers exclaimed.

The Wolfen reached angrily out and roughly grabbed Slips throat. Boon broke the Wolfen’s wrist and stood up about to pull a hidden knife.

A gun pushed against the back of Boons head.

“Move and die. Slip! Grab your winnings and let’s go. Now. The Captain wants us aboard now. The rest of you, you were mistaken… no one was cheating here — now piss off.”

Boon watched Slip slide all of his and the others credits into her purse. “Don’t kill him Hiesh.”

As she made haste to leave she quietly said, ”Sorry Boon”, blew him a kiss, winked and hustled past him.

Turning to watch Slip and Hiesh exiting with all his creds he sighed.

“Well damn…”

Grazz was still not sure what the hell @Death Otter want on this god forsaken planet. Nothing lived here and the environment was lethal to most species. But she had sent Grazz to retrieve the cargo. The cargo was described as an ancient stone chest covered weighing over 2 tons. Grazz had found the chest after a long search. It was melded into the rock after such a long time but no rock could resist the might of Grazz. Grazz grabbed the chest and begin the long climb back to the surface.

As Grazz exited the cave he was struck from behind by something very hard. Grazz dropped the chest and whirled. That little pipsqueak Grudge was standing there. Grazz reared back and brought the fire from the pit of core. Nothing could survive the fire that Grazz could wield. When Grazz was done he expected Grudge to be a smoldering pile of slag. Somehow he had grown larger. Grazz was stunned. How can that be? Who could not only live through the fire but grow larger from it's energy.

That moment of hesitation was too long. Grudge slammed into Grazz hard and sent him sprawling. Grazz leaped to his feet quickly but one of his feet was not working correctly. Limping hard Grazz charged Grudge and tore into him with his razor sharp claws. Grudge's already tough skin had hardened when he grew larger. The claws did not penetrate the stone hide. Grazz knew this was bad. Grazz circled waiting for the next attack to come. There was no way Grazz would let the lazy Grudge steal the package now. Grazz feinted at Grudge then turned and grabbed the chest. But before Grazz could get airborne, Grudge grapped his broken leg and slammed him to the ground.

Unable to move Grazz laid there and watch The Grudge take the chest and leave. After a few minutes Grazz's body had healed him enough that he could get up. As Grazz limped for a while building the strength to fly again he pulled on the large amulet he had found. Grudge may have gotten the chest and what ever was in it but he did not find the amulet. Grazz had found the amulet deep in the cave. It's power had sung out to his dragon blood. It was his and he knew it would make his unstoppable. Grudge would never again hurt grazz with this. It put it on now and felt the power of the dragons who had come before flood into him. Reeling as the power healed more of his wounds Grazz leaped aloft and flew back to the ship.

Post by Sabrek Vek »

Sabrick hated his job sometimes. The new species he has met had little concern for Honor and usually cared nothing for collateral damage. This Captain, Nemesis was no different. They hired him to assist in the acquisition of a bounty. They had muscle but needed an assault specialist. their muscle was monstrous creature name Grudge. He was abhorrent. As the team approached the compound the plan was set, Sabrick would para jump into the area of the barracks and engage the soldiers to occupy their attention. The crew member Hiesh would infiltrate the compound and secure the target. Coms would be open and once the target was extracted the team would be extracted.

As they approached the compound Sabrick readied himself. At the prescribed time, Sabrick parajumped. He landed in the courtyard of the compound. Alarms immediately went off. Troops poored from all over the compound and out of the barracks. they surrounded him with weapons drawn. He amplified his speech as his voice stated,

"I am Sabrick Vek, I give this opportunity to lay down your arms and surrender, I will meet any assault with like force so if you refuse to surrender at least lay down your weapons, so that I will not be forced to kill you."

Their captain retorted "There are 20 of us and only one of you, I don't think you are in a position to make demands."

Sabrick replied, "So I take it you will not lay down your arms?"
The Captain turned to walk away and stated "Kill Him."

Sabrick saddened by their choice sprung into action, The Captain heard laser fire, vibro blades whirling, wincing, and Death Rails mingled in with the crumpling armor. He continued walking after about 20 seconds he heard silence. Confused he turned around to see a pile of his soldiers crushed on the ground and Sabrick standing there in his armor with Scorch marks on it. He closed in quicker than the Captain could comprehend what was occurring. A swift kick to his knee made his knee bend backward as he felt tendon and muscle snap and bone break. He reached for his weapon, but Sabrick was too fast grabbing it and throwing it out of reach of his collapsed body now reduced to a crawl.

"You are fortunate you did not succeed drawing your, weapon. I would have been forced to kill you rather than just cripple you."

At that moment he heard Hiesh say, "Captain, the targets wife and kid are refusing to let me take the target peacefully."

Nemesis responded over comms, "Kill them then, we dont have time for this."

Sabrick yelled over comms. "No. There is no honor in slaughtering innocents."
Nemesis laughed, "Honor, how cute."

Sabrick heard weapon fire. He bolted for the Target's abode and made it there just as Hiesh was leveling his weapon at the child crying over his mothers body, and slammed into Hiesh whose shot went wide from the jostle.

"What the fuck man." Hiesh proclaimed.

“There is no need to kill the child." Sabrick replied.

"Captain's orders. She probably doesn't want to leave a witness." Hiesh retorted.

Sabrick began to say "You will have to go through m-" the. what he believes was a giant spacecraft slammed into him, and sent him sailing across the room. He looked up to see Grudge standing there. And a laser blast hit the child directly in the chest. He was slow to get up. Hiesh and Grudge grabbed the grief stricken target, and hastily ran to the extraction point.

Sabrick crawled over to the child and mother. Made sure they were dead. He made his way to the courtyard and found they had stabbed the captain in the chest with a giant blade. He went to a garage where he found an ATV and started it up. He had to get out of here before this was all blamed on him. He would happily take responsibility for the guards. He now owed a debt to the innocents he failed to protect, a debt of justice. He would do whatever it takes to make sure that the crew of The Pursuit answered for its crimes. But now he had to get off this planet and find a way to make that happen.
