Arrival in the Dark

Post by Sgt 86Delta »

Arrival in the Dark Location Type: Unknown
Date: Unknown
Day: Unknown
Time: Unknown

The small band steps from the lovely flowering grotto into a dark silent chamber with a stone statue on a pedestal, nearly twenty feet from base to the top of the statue's head. Cobwebs and dust fill every space from the floor to the top of the twenty five foot dome at the top of the room. The only light comes from what you brought and illuminates the small twenty foot circumfrence room. Your first steps stir layers of dust so thick that 1970's deep shag carpet would look like a freshly mowed lawn. Closely cut, neat, and trim.

As soon as Buxley steps through the blue glow from the portal suddenly disappears and the team ( @Seelia Nishnocket, @Kardis, and @Madok the Restless ) is plunged into definite darkness. Just the sounds of the four of you breathing and a silent prayer that none of you are allergic to dust. It is deathly still here and your way home seems to be gone.

@Kardis steps through the gate and one small step for a cosmo knight stirs up an enormous cloud of dust. One would think the sound of such a weighted step would echo through the circular room the team is in. Silence, still and eerie, swallows up any sound beyond a few feet radius of the party.

Kardis has very little clue as to where they are but he does know that they are no longer underneath the Vauxhall Castle. The statue nearby is very nearly as tall as Kardis in his full form.

With a tiny 'shink' sound, Seelia drew Silverthorn from its sheathe and buzzed over to the statue, her enchanted blade and wings giving off a ghostly blue light that was too dim to make out much details. Such was the gloom that even Seelia's sight, like a cat's in the dark, was hard-pressed to make much out.

"This place has been waiting a long time," she said as she squinted at the statue's face, trying to see if it could be recognized.

Fumbling around in his cloak Madok brings out a flashlight. While not as bright as the portal was it does shed a little illumination on the dust filled room. Bringing his scarf up to keep the dust out He sweeps the light around the room. "Dunn'a look as tho anythin has been here in a fair bit. At least there's probably nothin looking to eat us then."

The Rose Wand clatters to the dusty floor as @Seelia Nishnocket drew her blade, the dust providing an actual cushion though and it would seem the Wand actually floated to the floor as opposed to being discarded in haste.

Standing up he goes to dust himself off and then reconsiders as the ayers are thick and well, no one wants to get the hantavirus so far from home and medical attention.

CK Success _
Location was built before the Grotto.
Raise _
Location was built nearly 2500 years ago from current Rifts timeline.
"Interesting. Buxley runs his hands along the wall of worked stone. This is some really old work." Pointing to an uneven cut in the stone, "Would say it was a stone on stone cutting. Here it looks like they had some metal tools."

Stepping back from the nearest wall, he backs into the stone statue. Looking up into the darkness, he cannot see anything. Getting @Seelia Nishnocket to fly to the head height of the statue, he directs @Madok the Restless to shine his flashlight up from mid height.

@Kardis just stands there casting his radiance on the small gathering.

Notice Sight Success _
The direction the statue is facing is an actual opening or doorway.
Raise _
The statue bears a stricking resemblance to another piece of stonework.
"She looks vaguely familiar. History and cultures were apt to adopt older diety as their own."

"I think our next stop is through this doorway."

Buxley steps to the doorway, actually an archway and goes silent. He motions with his hand for you all to join him.

Notice Smell Success _
Through the dust and cobwebs you smell death. Old death. Like if people had been buried several thousand years ago kind of dead.
Raise _
There are other subtler smells along with those of death. The smell of cinders and ash. The smell of animals. An acrid putrid smell. And the smell of a human.

Seelia arrows over Buxley's head and through the doorway, sword held before her!

Abruptly she pauses, her long pointed ears tilting this way and that for a moment.

"Hey, big folk," she says quietly, "There's talking up ahead. A lot of talking. Smells like a tomb in here too."

And with a puff of smoke or maybe dust, Seelia is gone!

Post by Kardis »

Kardis moves one step and then the other trying to be careful to not completely destroy whatever building they were in by his gravimetric might. It seem unused and most places left unused were old and brittle.

”What is that sounds??? Keeper...” Kardis stumbles to knee undoing his care and concern for the room they were in. His breathe is ragged and he looks up as if trying to pierce the ceiling with his gaze, ”Keeper... Where are the stars? What is that sound?” Where am I? Kardis grabs his head as if assaulted by an unseen foe.
Chronicle of Kardis

There was a time when the knight Kardis found himself trapped in a cacoon of silk whom strength was that of the cosmo knight itself. The queen of many moons was a terrible woman who ruled over a small conglomerate within the boarders of the CCW. Looking at her she was terrifying. A beautiful woman whose skin was like shimmering gossamer and if you stared long enough you felt like you could find your very soul with in. But her undergarraige was something of nightmares. Legs like a spider with poison barbs and like a spider she could spin web as strong as any substance in the galaxy. The worst thing about her... Was her voice, a deafening ring when unleashed. Kardis had fought her and was laid low by the voice. Even though he eventually escaped and undid her wraith, the knight from time to time would still hear the voices ill and at times crippling effects.

@Seelia Nishnocket zips into the space beyond the Sanctuary of the Healer which is a circular chamber maybe sixty feet across. In another corner of the large chamber, there is a large shadow in the darkness.

Arrival in the Dark - Prep Round One

Post by Sgt 86Delta »

The shadows are moving fast and the sounds are muffled due to the dust on the floor. While sounds are muffled the air carries the smell of rotting flesh, brimstone, and sulfur.

@Kardis @Madok the Restless @Seelia Nishnocket

What are you doing? There are three rounds until the shadow arrives at your location.

Max Questions
I appreciate Max asking questions in HO, so I am posting details here for Jon and Jason to reference.

First thing is the scene is dark. You have a little bit of light from each other, but the darkness makes anything beyond personal, say a one foot radius, much more than a dim haze.

Though the room you are in now feels bigger than the room you just came from its hard to get the exact dimensions. Once again natural surroundings darkness, heavy stone walls, and years of dust make most sensory notice checks difficult.

There is darkness and there is the darkness given off by other creatures or beings. You have both in this room. Natural Darkness and Creatures or beings who exude darkness. Hence shadows moving your direction.

Kardis the brave, the bold, the imaginitive saw his ever constant companion, Keeper the dark elf standing in a corner. The elf beckoned Kardis to entreat the darkness. Kardis nodded to some unseen spector and strode forward letting his gravity call out to the shadows that milled around. He spoke in a tremor threatening to bring down the very walls with which they now stood, ” I am Kardis.” What more was there to say? It said it all.

@Kardis strides forward to meet the oncoming shadow. Good Cosmo Knight.

The space he leaves empty and truly the only other voice that is heard is rather booming and echoing from the Sanctuary of the Healer behind @Madok the Restless , @Seelia Nishnocket , and the mighty Kardis. "It has been a long time since something so old has called forth my true form. The space is granted."

Kardis is instantly aware of large shape easily twice maybe three times his size. A large reptilian head appears on his right side and it sounds like the creaking of old timbers on a wooden sailing ship. There is a rush of air and the dust blows back away from the Knights some twenty feet, revealing a hard packed dirt floor that meets up with stone walls.

There is light now. Eenough to see some 30 feet in front of you.

steve-argyle-gen-con-2017-pillar.jpg

The man Buxley is no where to be seen.

Dragon History _
Dragons have been on Earth since the birth of man. Come to Earth to watch over fledgling mankind and also to re-establish themselves, as the Dragons had lost their homeworlds to Demonic Hoardes.

Intent on preserving their lives and ensuring the species of man survived, Dragons metamorphised, blending in with mankind. They shared knowledge with man and even provided protections as the species grew and developed.

Mankind became suspicious after the Demonic Hordes came to Earth. Erradication of anything not man became the standard and Dragons went into hiding. Some were able to maintain their presence among mankind in human form. Others tooks to secret hidey holes where they slept till mankind needed them again. Others took their fight against the Demonic Hordes to the Hordes personally and little else has been heard of them.

When Rifts began reshaping Earth, the Dragons (some of them) took to the land, sea, and skies again to help mankind survive and thrive and recover from loss and trajedy.
Keeper to Kardis _
To Kardis's left appears the spectre image of Ziton, the Keeper.
"Kardis. The ruined world we were too late to save. That was my home. My planet. My Earth."

"Stay the Demonic Hoardes. This Earth. This World. Can still be reclaimed."

"The nameless one who bound me. Is here now, beware."

It could be easily confused but the Knights were going for what effect, exactly?

Buxley's metamorphosis lit things up in the Knights' dark corner. Madok lent more to it still, the oncoming shadows seemed to coalesce and take form. Kardis's booming voice was directed at whome, no one was quite certain. And Seelia bathed in all the radiant splendor was at the front taunting the shadows rushing their position.

Were anyone to look at the opposite corner of the chamber, the tall shadow and the human sized shadow would appear to both turn around at the same time. There was so much light filling the once dark chamber that it would be hard for anyone to not take notice.

Bending his head down towards the @Kardis cosmo knight, "I am called the Dawn Herald. But Buxley works as well."

"If my guess is correct we have a small hoarde of demons approaching. Ready yourselves, Good Knights."

Seelia, taken aback briefly by the transformation, suddenly erupted into peals of laughter.

"Now you're even BIGGER, Buxley!" she accused, pointing at him and slinging her sword back over her shoulder. "If this goes on I'll plant a tree on your back and make a home of you!"

Still chuckling, she swished her enchanted sword around a few times, then held it ready. "Demons, eh? I'll make short work of them."

Magic flared around her, twisting and circling in little loops of sparkly light, like motes of silver speared in a moonbeam.

The very ground beneath Kardis erupted in a wild flower superbloom of alien origins. Deep iridescent purple flowers formed underneath his feet as he tapped the cosmic forge for might unsealed. Scholars and historians would one day find this place where Kardis had strode and find themselves confronted with a mystery unrevealed. Would monoliths describing his and his allies charge be someday built in this place? It would matter not as the alien follage that sprouted as his might filled the space would be a sufficient everlasting marker.

The shadowy demon wave crashes into the radiance of the Knights.

The shadows closer to the ground appear to get a shock from the radiance aura and begin running along the outer edges. The edges of the light have many individuals scurring towards the Knights and then away.

The next block of shadows is roughly eight feet tall and nearly fifteen feet across. The shadowy nature masks any other distinguishing features. These shadows stop maybe ten feet from the outer edge of the radiance.

The last shadowy figures moving quickly from the rear are dwarfed by one very large shadow. Three shadows in total and the tallest of them is twenty feet tall including what appears to be horns atop of its head. The other two figures appear to be human in size though the darkness makes it hard to tell distinct features.

Wild [dice:2qdr2mf5]54709:1[/dice:2qdr2mf5]
Trapped underground, and surrounded by a small horde of demons is new to the godling. And a little overwhelming. Despite the growing concern, no fear, that the situation could soon get VERY put of hand he holds off on throwing out a banishment early. Calm down laddy. Let em group up first Gripping the Staff of the Planes tightly he looks to his companions. "Try and get em bunched up and I'll send some of the buggers back from whence they came"

Madok's Fear _
A mighty conflict in a place that Madok only vaguely remembers. There had been a feast with many. A challenge had arisen. The challenge had been accepted. And Madok.Madok had done what then.

The challenger had been ... Bres and he had lunged at Dagda, the High King. In Bres's hand was the Spear of Lugh. Madok had pushed Dagda from his thrown and lunged himself in the way to take the Spear of Lugh to his chest. A deadly wound.

Yet as Madok looked at the demon before him. He noticed the eyes and realized he had seen them once before.

As the spearwas thrust by Bres into his heart, Madok had looked down at his chest. There had not been a spear there but a trident had impaled him. The figure that held Madok impaled looked like Bres and then he didn't.

For Madok reality crashed with the past. His past. Madok had once been the right hand to Dagda the High King of the Tuatha De. It was his place to protect and defend the High King, no matter the cost. So that fateful feast day when he had taken Bres's spear thrust , it had been his duty and calling.

Yet it had not been Bres that tried to kill Dagda with the Spear of Lugh.

Looking upon the demon, Madok knew he had seen this figure before. The trident he carried in his hand had been the one that had impaled him. Those eyes were the last eyes he had looked upon as he ... died? And the oppressive heat and smell of sulfur and brimstone.

Madok a godling could not be killed in his home realm by anyone other than those that existed in or from the realm. No other weapons than those of the Tuatha De would end his existence completely and entirely.

Madok's mind found clarity and the grog burned from his mind and body. This demon before him had ripped the spear from his body and in so doing had separated his physical body and spiritual body. With the physical body destroyed his spirit had been trapped in the spear. The feast goers had ascended on the demon, thinking it was Bres, and collectively dismissed him from the court of the Tuatha De.

The vision for Madok continues.

The demon returned to Earth and England by forces not his own fell like a meteor from the sky and landed in a place up north. The lands of the Formorians to be exact. Madok was of another realm and his spirit was quickly expelled from the Trident and found a place in human baby left to be attended by a circle of druids.

Angelus glanced back at the raider behind her. She grunted and gripped her halberd tight as the darkness held even tighter to her. She wanted to slam the blade deep into the chest of the demon but the spell had her instead lifted it up into the air as she charged forward and swung it down at knights in the middle of the aura of light

Seelia's Fear _
Seeing the large demon before her, @ Seelia, could not recall ever having met him/her/it before until his gaze fell upon her.

In her mind, she hears a voice that sounds of crushing and grating stone. "Seelia Nishnocket, your task was never completed. Your mission left unfulfilled. You have failed me. The Knights of Vauxhall stand before me."

Confused. Seelia is confused and she looks more inquisitively at the demon before her. The demon's voice softens in her mind and then a vision opens up before her.

The last time she spoke in person with the Lady of Summer, had been a blistering intense encounter. Temperatures were such that the heat nearly melted the delicate membranes of her wings. It was as if she was breathing in sulfur and fire. Yet the Lady had looked resplendent and radiant, a creature of beautiful flame and fire.

Seelia had only spoken dirrectly to the Lady a few times in Seelia's short and glorious lifetime. Each time was different. Yet each time was the same. Except the last. What was it about the last time that made the difference.

Little of the conversation of the last meeting came back to her. Yet Seelia was certain that there had been something said that meant something now. Then she heard in her head again the voice that sounds of crushing and grating stone and she realizes, that she thought the Lady of Summer had had a cold. Seelia had even asked the Lady such a question.

The Lady had not responded to Seelia's jest but had directed Seelia to find the Knights of Vauxhall. She destinctly remembered being instructed to find and join the Knights. Excited she had left the presence of the Lady of Summer and spent the next few weeks searching Southern England for Vauxhall and its Knights.

The voice that sounds of crushing and grating stone enters your mind, a curse errupts from its non existent mouth. "Communication in this world is so unreliable." Suddenly the Lady of Spring appears to Seelia in a resplendent gown of amber and flame. The voice that sounds of crushing and grating stone says, "You were to find and join [destroy] the Knights of Vauxhall."

Seelia flies above the ground several feet and looks the demon in the eyes from several yards away, "Was it you that told me to challenge Buxley in the Castle about being the fallen champion of the Lady of Spring?" Seelia could not recall the voice at the Castle encounter.

Furious, the demon's voice errupts in her mind. "You were not supposed to challenge Buxley. You were supposed to destroy him."

Fear check, success!
Spirit -8 fear check... +4 from the chronicle: [dice:2ww4ggq1]54827:0[/dice:2ww4ggq1] ace [dice:2ww4ggq1]54827:2[/dice:2ww4ggq1]wild [dice:2ww4ggq1]54827:1[/dice:2ww4ggq1] last Benny spent: extra effort with Elan: Kardis knows not fear! [dice:2ww4ggq1]54827:3[/dice:2ww4ggq1]
Kardis never learned the meaning of fear. Nor did the hulkimg knight from the stars know when to back down. With armor and cosmic weapon in hand he strode after the pixie. ” The forge will see this place burned bright!”
With each footfall the ground shook and crumbled beneath his awesome might. A brilliant gleam of the forge’s own light shown from his visor, a reminder to all foes what they truely were about to face [fear checks for demons and Angelous]!

Kardis's Vision _
It is something to be young and inexperienced. It is entirely something else to be Kardis.

As Kardis looks to the demon, he notices that his Chronicale has raised itself to his chest height. The belt chain attached to its spine is till slack so it has not reached the full length that it can go. But the large tome falls open in front of Kardis.

The book fell open to the middle and the pages quickly turn left to right, quickly finding its way to the beginning of the tome. The words upon the page read, "The Birth of a Cosmo Knight. The Life of Kardis." Kardis blinks back tears and looks up from the tome. Keeper is standing there.

"It is time for another journey my young friend." Keeper points in a direction away from the demons and the other knights.

Do you join Keeper?

Angelus saw the small pixie standing...or floating... despite the large tide of monsters heading her way. She heard the words she yelled out at them and realized it was mostly due to arrogance. However she still admired the bravery that was partially there with it. Even as she held her halberd side ways and swung it at her like a giant fly swatter.

GM Notes:

The responses to your Fear Checks are a mix of visions and revelations that a particular character has. The information can be shared.

The vision/revelation does not consume any real time, it just takes place before the upcoming combat sequence.

Birth of a Cosmo Knight _
Kardis agrees to follow Keeper.

Scenes change and Kardis finds himself standing beside Keeper on a nondescript mountain. Keeper has his head raised and is looking up into the deepness of the dark night sky. Kardis ever curious does the same. He realizes that there are no star out.

A few minutes later, Kardis grows tired of the emptiness of the night sky and brings his gaze to follow upon Keeper. Something is not quite right and as Kardis stares longer and harder, he begins comparing features. Kardis soon realizes that this is a younger Keeper. Several hundred years by Earth standards, which Kardis has begun comparing things to.

Kardis a bit taken back by the younger Keeper reaches a hand forward to touch Keeper and finds that his hand passes right through Keeper. Kardis realizes now that he is a silent observer to whatever may be or will be transpiring.

With head still raised to the sky, Keeper raises his hands and begins waving or sweeping them across the darkness of the night sky. Here and there it would appear that Keeper is uncovering the stars, as new lights begin filling the sky following Keeper's movements.

The starlight fills the vast dark expanse and illuminates Keeper. With the sky lit, Keeper's arms fall to his side and the starlight gleams on Keeper's face. Kardis looks closer and sees that the light is reflecting from Keeper's tear streaked face.

Falling to his knees, Keeper lays his face in his hands. Sobs wrack his body and the sight disturbs Kardis greatly. Suddenly he looks to the sky again with tears brimming and filling his eyes. Kardis would almost say the figure is pleading.

As if in response to his silent pleadings, the night sky erupts with a meteor shower streaking across the sky. Keeper watches. An pauses, something akin to mental calculations and then he is on his feet moving towards the landing zone of the meteor shower.

Across the nondescript landscape he moves and constantly looking to the sky. He notes as each falling star winks out in the atmosphere. Well almost all of them blink out. One of them actually seems to be drawing the energy and light from those around it. Actually getting bigger and brighter.

Kardis was unable to follow the young Keeper as he ran off after the falling star.

Suddenly beside Kardis another whispy form materializes. The older Keeper stands beside Kardis. "That was when you came to me. That is how you came to me."

The light from the Knights and their Dragon of Dawn partner, Buxley, has illuminated the vast majority of the stone structure that the demonic horde has been encountered in. Something for @Angelus_23 is lingering from the rear and back of her mind. A memory. A thought. A place. A time. A sense of being.

Instructions _
@Madok the Restless and @Seelia Nishnocket
Please feel free to respond to the visions and revelations. Fear is a strong catalyst for many things. How correct is your vision/revelation?
Kardis's Charge _
Kardis stands next to Keeper in the silence. Keeper waves his hand and Kardis and Keeper are standing on a hill in a desolute land.

"In my previous life, I had been proud and arrogant. I held a position of authority and like the people of my home world, had grown complacent and content. We were certain that our ideal life could not be changed."

"But deception and lies. The demons came and deceived many. Physically they looked like us and talked like us. They spread their lies and corruption. And their disease spread like wild fire in a forest of dried timbers."

Keeper waves his hands again and the vision changes once more. The two stand on ahillside with beautiful winding road throughspring flowers. Up ahead is a lush green forest and a slow carefree moving river. Overtop of the forest could be seen a glistening marble walled city or splendor and grace. Peaceful and ideal.

"When we realized that something was wrong. We began fighting back. For a time we held the demon hordes at bay. But the demons patiently waited for us to fall into contintment and complacency once more and they threaded their deceptions and lies and reawoke the past. Soon we were warring with each other and the demons found us easy pickings."

"In desperation I sought out a demon on the rise. It had ambition and drive and was poised to make a power play or two to gain some leverage in the heirarchy. I made a deal with it. I would show it the secret nuances of my world and in return he would spare those that remained when he ascended power."

"Its deception and power was greater than my waning power and I found myself bound to and corrupted by this demonic entity. I served to further destroy and deplete my own world. One thing I did notice was that its hold on me did not bind me all time."

"One such time I escaped. Horrified I fled across the universe seeking a means of rescue."

Keeper waved his hand again and the pair stode on the nondescript mountain in the darkness before the stars feel.

"This night I truly humbled myself. I sought the old gods of my world. The builders and shapers of my culture and civilization."

"They spoke to me in sadness. They promised to send one who would reclaim the lost. Hence you were delivered to me."

"My pride and arrogance got in the way, once more. I assumed that you as a being of celestial power would come and radicate the evil from my world that I had tainted myself with."

Keeper paused for a time staring out into the depths of the dark night. He spoke once more.

"I have found that to correct my errors, I had to sacrifice my world, my pride, and many other things. It has also become apparent that I was given responsibility to teach you how to reclaim the lost."

Once more Keeper waves his hand and the pair stands on the desolate hill which Kardis has come to recognize as Keeper's home world.

"I was foolish and naive to think that you would be able to, at such a young age and inexperienced as you were, reclaim my home which was in its final death throws. The engagement I sent you into stunted your growth and development for quite sometime."

Keeper turns and looks at Kardis for a very long time. "Kardis. Earth is not my home, but it is home to numerous entities that rightfully belong there. Your final test and trial to assume full knighthood is to remove the demon I was bound to. It is stronger than your last encounter with it on my home world. Being bound to it, allowed it to have access to this world when we were in stasis for three hundred earth years."

"It will destroy this world and its inhabitants like it did my world and many others that we have visited in our journeys together."

"As always my young and radiant friend, I am bound to you through this," The Chronicle of Kardis raises before Kardis's eyes. "I am with you always my friend."

As if Keeper had waved his hands once more the seen changes and Kardis finds himself once more at the brink of battle before a demonic horde, with a demon and its entourage.

Beneath his cosmic armor Kardis’ eyes fill with emotion. His friend bore his soul and it moved him as of the forge itself had presented itself. Perhaps unknowingly to Kardis it had. No matter he took the chronicle back and hung it on his belt. ” Keeper... Hear my words. By the forge’s light the demon who holds sway over you will be vanquished...” They young cosmic powered knight paused briefly trying to find the words to express the inspiration that keepers plight had so instilled. ” No this... We will return to your world and seed it with life should we survive!”

The glaze of memories long past passes over the godlings face and when it has gone a cold rage is left behind. Those who know him would find little of the affable healer and sometimes warrior they have grown accustomed to in this face. But Madok cuDagda was and is a god of war. Not just a defender of his leige, no, the hound of Dagda was set on the foes of the Tautha De in the stead of his aging lord. And so he would again.

"Do ye know me Demon?" He calls out to the hulking figure. "Tis Madok cuDagda. While I maybe more'n a little smaller than when last we met, ye'll still need more'n a surprise attack to trap me yer trinket this time ya cowardly fook. I'm fixin ta shove that thing up yer arse and break it'off."
