Story

There was a time, long ago, when magic lay thick over the lands of Earth and the old roads that wove between worlds were intact, and well-trod. In those days a girl who had never quite fit in, a girl who felt the pull of something more; something she couldn't put name to, followed a bobbing light into a circle of stones. She was not seen again, in this world.

In another world she stumbled into the Winter Marches; a domain of the larger world of Faerie that lies close enough to the mortal realm that it experiences a semblance of time, if not always in lockstep. She was met by a handful of natives. An assortment of fey creatures holding out in resistance against the reign of Octavia, the Queen of the realm. With no immediate way home, she accepted the offer of hospitality, and was drawn into the conflict. Having been cautioned not to give anyone her true name, she chose to be called 'Sigil.'

Together with her confederates, Sigil joined the resistance, eventually coming to lead it. As the movement gained followers and ground, the seasons turned. Winter's grip began to ease, the clouds began to part. In the end the Tides of Spring clashed with Octavia's forces at her redoubt of Icecrown, high in the mountains, and at great cost overcame them. Sigil herself dueled Octavia, and with an enchanted ring that reflects magic, turned her icy powers back on her...leaving her forever frozen in her own courtyard. She then took the Regalia, and assumed the power and price of Queendom over the Summer Marches.

Her reign was long, even by the standards of the Marches. Troublingly long. No one rose to challenge the Summer Queen in the battle of Autumn, leading to a new Winter. The ways and doors to the mortal realm remained stubbornly shut. As the Marches were mingled with mortality, so too were its Queens... A girl of mixed blood was chosen for this story to play out upon, but none came.

But the seasons turned all the same. Sigil realized one day that her heart was hardening. The greenery of the Mantle was turning brittle and rust in shade, little by little. A chill wind was blowing from Icecrown...just little gusts for now, but change was in the air. She had held on for so long, but now faced a hard choice. Continue to rule, knowing that the Marches would drag her along with them into Winter, and become the creature she had fought against...or cede the Throne to another. What other? There was only one possible answer.

Sigil returned to Icecrown, and using the might of the Regalia, undid Octavia's spell. She offered the former queen a pact, offering up three items of the Regalia and the Throne in exchange for a head start before being hunted. A head start that Sigil could use to begin the process of gathering forces to oppose Octavia again. The seasons had to turn...but within that framework there was a lot of room for interpretation. There had to be a Winter, but how long and how harsh? That was malleable. Sigil hoped to hobble Octavia, preventing her from exercising the kind of utter and cruel dominion she had before...and then to remove her again with less trouble.

Octavia was, of course, suspicious...but from her point of view there was little reason not to accept the pact, albeit not without some revisions. She specified that Sigil would have a 'year and a day,' but that she couldn't spend it in the Marches. She would be exiled to the mortal realm...cut off from the forces she might otherwise organize. This was indeed troublesome, but Sigil had deceived her once again. For, while Octavia slept in ice, Sigil had added a fourth item to the Regalia; the mirror ring she'd used on Octavia. When providing 'the three items of the Regalia,' she only surrendered the Mantle, the Crown, and the Ring...keeping the original Wand for herself. Without the Wand, the set was not complete, and its powers substantially reduced. To make matters worse, Sigil was then cast out by the force of the oath to the Mists beyond, to the mortal world...beyond Octavia's fury and promises of vengeance.

To Earth, in fact, where she appeared through a Rift. Through uncertain days Sigil traveled, as alien as any newcomer, until she met some people who could get her oriented. A being of vast magical powers, she quickly landed on her feet and began seeking out allies, in hopes they might help her when the Wild Hunt found its way to the mortal world again. Perhaps even when the time came for a new Spring. The stronger, the better...and it's hard to find stronger than the Venators.
