Interludes: A little R&R

Post by John Smith »

Flush with cash (At least in terms of cash on level 4) from the deal with Splice and the goods gathered from Ricky's failed assault, the various members of the team enjoy a little R&R. After all, they need to be well rested for the upcoming smuggling run that Skip has arranged. What does your character get up to in the 2 days leading up to the next job? Narrate a scene from the coming days the shows a little flavor of your character and their life in the slums that are level 4. Could you be how he enjoys spending his cash (spending mostly handwavium, the credits that never seem to actually lighten the purse), what he or she does to relax, a little side work they do apart from the rest of the crew, or anything else you can think of.

If you need a little inspiration, feel free to use the standard rolls for subject matter, but don't feel like you need to:
  • 1. Spades: A great victory or personal triumph.
  • 2. Hearts: A tale of the hero's greatest love— lost, found, present, or waiting on her back home.
  • 3. Diamonds: Something your hero wants or already has. It might be a material possession, recognition, a political goal, or even a trip he wishes to take to some amazing destination.
  • 4. Clubs: A tale of misfortune from your hero's past, perhaps revealing something of his Hindrances or a dark secret.
If you take this opportunity for an interlude, take 1XP that takes effect immediately.

D-Bee, Dimensional Being.

The lost, the displaced, the interdimensional flotsam.

Though she was one of a kind, Kaelin could be counted amidst an array of hundreds if not thousands. Like many others she'd been unwillingly plucked from the world she called home and deposited upon a strange new world filled with malicious creatures and an unfriendly at best native population. How or why she did not know, but she vowed to try and find a way to return back to where she belonged. Though one obstacle stood in the way of her achieving her desired goal.

Money.

She had learnt from a young age that money made the world go round, it helped loosen lips and open doors. Here it was no different, and it was even more difficult to acquire. Back home she could've made a tiny sum by lightening a few pockets and purses, but here they frustrating used what was called 'credits' and a darn sight more tricky to get hold off via her normal method. Thankfully her share of the payment from Splice had given her a decent amount for what she needed.

Not long after her arrival on this world she had the good fortune of falling in with a crowd of other D-Bees, least ones who were able to set her right. They'd agreed to help her out and pass on information that might aid her quest in returning home, though like everything it came with a price. First she had to pay off her debt for their initial help, then pay an ever increasing amount for the info she needed. It was a far from ideal situation, but she felt that she didn't have much in the way of options.

So here Kaelin was driving her battered cargo hauler, with her share of Splice's payment, to go meet her D-Bee benefactors hoping that they would finally divulge a useful titbit of info. However, as she neared her destination her hopes crashed and burned. A cordon had been thrown up round the hab-block where she was going to meet her benefactors, an ISS anti-Deeb raid had beaten her here first. Worse, one of the ISS officers appeared to be the very same one she'd run into back at the Pit.

This was bad, very bad.

Kaelin trusted her benefactors about as far as she could them, so she didn't put it pass them to not reveal details of her and many other D-Bees residing on Level 4 in order to save their own hides. She wasn't sure how much protection the crew could give her from the ISS, but they were the only ones that she could even remotely trust at this point. Least she hoped they would protect her as she was certain that sooner or later the ISS would come for her.

She kept driving, hoping that the ISS goons wouldn't notice her.

Chi-Town/Level 4/Walker’s Convenience
Afternoon
Round 0

Zeke lugged the cases of Chi-Cola onto the hand trolley and pushed them out onto the floor of the corner His aunt Josephine was behind the counter doing some bookwork. She looked at him over her reading glasses.

“I’m going to head up and start dinner,” she said. “What would you like?”

Zeke smiled and started stacking the cola. He felt the injury to his chest from the other night twinge a bit and bit his tongue to keep from alerting his aunt that he was hurt. “Pesto?” he suggested.

Josephine nodded. “Mind the store.”

“Of course, Aunt Josephine,” Zeke said, watching her leave up the back stairs.

When he finished the cola, Zeke went behind the counter. He grabbed a magazine from the rack and opened it on the counter. A pair of male youths came in and Zeke reached under the counter, touching his shotgun to make sure it was still there. It could fire regular bullets, so all anyone usually could tell that it was just fancily decorated. The youths were Tres Reyes, the local gang. They’d started to behave since the neighborhood Vigilante -- Zeke -- had started kicking their asses at night, but they were still bangers. They just bought some beer and left, so there was no problem.

Zeke grabbed up his backpack and pulled out a ragged book. It had a red V on it nestled around the Coalition’s icon. Zeke didn’t really know what the symbol meant, but it was one of the journals he had found in a chest of his father’s things. This journal had belonged to his great-grandfather Cordell Walker, who had served in the Coalition Army in the Bloody Campaign in the first war against the Federation of Magic. It also contained spells, and Zeke hunched over the counter, studying one of the spells. He couldn’t really practice it here in the store, but he could get the words and sense of it in his mind and practice some of the pronunciations and gestures.

The door chime dinged and Zeke quickly shoved the journal under the counter with the shotgun. Looking up, he saw a pretty blonde walk in and relaxed.

“Hey, Tanya,” he greeted the corner cyber-doc. “How’s business?”

“Quieter since Vigilante started making Tres Reyes behave,” Tanya said. “I stopped by to take a look at that chest wound.”

“Oh,” Zeke said as she put her doctor’s bag on the counter. “Uh, sure.” He started to undo the buttons on his shirt. He blushed a bit as she ran her fingers gently along the healing scar. “You’re lucky it isn’t worse,” she said quietly, looking up into Zeke’s face.

He bit his lip, staring into her beautiful eyes. “I, uh…” All he could think about was how he’d been dragged off by Diamond Dust at the Pit. Now that felt...wrong.

“It’s healing nicely,” Tanya said. She opened her bag to pull out a bit of cream and fresh bandages. As she finished, there was a loud rumble outside the shop and a big cargo hauler stopped on the street.

Zeke frowned. That hauler looked familiar. Then he spotted a familiar face inside.

“Um, just a sec,” Zeke said, buttoning his shirt again. “Um...do you wanna stay for dinner? I can tell Aunt Josephine to set an extra place?”

Tanya smiled. “I’d like that.”

Zeke grinned and, with his shirt buttoned unevenly, went out to the curb and knocked on the window of the cargo hauler.

“Kaelin? What are you doing here? I thought we agreed to not see each other until there was another job.”

After a brief misunderstanding that left Magnus with a bruise on his chin and a finer appreciation for foreplay, the evening out with Splice went well. Too well, perhaps, as Magnus found himself with a few joints out of whack and most of his fine-motor functions in need of a calibration.

"Prosek's balls, man, did you go 10 rounds with a N'mbyr Gorilla Man?" Fancy Clancy says, as he hooks Magnus up to the diagnostics in his dingy back alley cyber-clinic.

"Something like that," Magnus says, with a sly smile. "Got into a little tussle with someone who knew what she was doing."

As he pores over the data flashing on this hand-held, the cyber-doc grunts.

"You know it's coming up on 10 years since I installed your first bit of 'ware. That titanium and kevlar mesh has held up well. NGR stuff, if my supplier wasn't lying. Kept you in one piece, anyway, which ain't nothing considering your line of work."

Magnus' mind wanders back to a decade before, when he'd nearly crawled Clancy's office, half the bones in his body broken and a piece of paper in his pocket that would put him into hock with Black Benny for two lifetimes.

It had seemed worth it at the time, and not a day had passed that Magnus regretted the decision. If his mother had been around, she could have talked him out of it, but her death had been the tremor that set the dominoes falling.

Bull Danvers, the man she'd been living with, had never been much of a surrogate father for Magnus. That didn't change when his mother got sick.

Magnus had already been living on his own, so it was a couple of days later when he figured out Bull had sold everything in his mom's apartment and moved in with some other lady. At 18, with the bulk and brains to match, Magnus had tracked Bull down and knocked him on his ass, like he'd been wanting to do since he was a kid.

Bull -- and a half dozen of his friends from the munitions factory -- tracked Magnus down the day after that, and the beating didn't stop when Magnus hit the ground. It took him most of a night to crawl to Black Benny, and another half a day to crawl to Fancy Clancy's to get put back together.

By the time he was back on his feet, he was bigger, better ... fast as an adder and as strong as a Rhino-Buffalo. Smarter, too, though not thanks to anything Clancy installed. He'd tracked down Bull's buddies, one-by-one, then paid a visit to Bull himself. He didn't kill him, but Bull hadn't eaten solid food or taken a piss standing up in almost ten years now ...

Magnus still remembered the feeling as he stood over his former tormentor, blood dripping off his knuckles. The electric buzz in his veins as his cybernetic neural pathways shifted into cool down mode.

He'd been chasing that feeling every day since.

"Best feeling in the world," he says, softly, as Clancy hums and fiddles with the overclock settings on his hand-held.

Morning
Round 0

“Won’t be a bother,” Zeke said with a smile. “Aunt Josephine usually makes enough for leftovers.” He glanced around. There wasn’t really any place to park on Level 4. Most folks walked, and if they had a vehicle, they just parked it wherever they could find space close to where they wanted to go. He figured Kaelin’s rig was fine right where it was. “C’mon in.” Zeke opened the door and helped Kaelin out.

Tanya came to the door of the store and leaned on the frame, raising a blonde eyebrow as Zeke gallantly helped the shorter woman out of the rig. “What’s up, Zeke?” she asked.

“This is Kaelin,” he said. “She’s a...friend.”

“A friend?” Zeke totally missed the tone in the blonde cyber-doc’s voice.

“I invited her to dinner. You can come, too,” Zeke offered. “Aunt Josephine likes you.” Zeke blushed a bit.

Kaelin muttered her thanks to Zeke for his help, then made awkward introduction to both Tanya and Zeke's aunt after they'd entered the store. Though soon as she smelt dinner her stomach rumbled and reminded her just how hungry she was, especially since she'd hadn't eaten properly for a while. Her anxiety subsided a bit as she began to muse that this might've been a good idea.

Morning
Round 0

Zeke led the two women into the shop and put up the CLOSED sign. He snatched up his bag of gear from behind the counter, slipping his magical shotgun inside, and they headed up to the flat above the store. It wasn’t a large flat, and was pretty typical of Level 4. Josephine and Zeke had done what they could to make it a home, however. The walls were painted, the floor wasn’t too bad, and they had electricity.

Josephine was in her forties, her blonde hair pulled back into a no nonsense bun. She greeted Kaelin and Tanya, giving Zeke a grin. Zeke blushed a little as he made introductions.

Josephine had definitely made extras. As far as Level 4 food was concerned, it was decent. Josephine had some skill in making meat substitute actually taste somewhat like meat, and canned vegetables not too bad. At least it was actual food and not nutrient gruel and protein bars that many on Level 4 ate to survive.

“Since we have guests,” Josephine said, reaching up and pulling down a bottle of homemade wine, pouring it into some chipped, but serviceable, china mugs.

“So, Kaelin, my, aren’t you pretty,” Josephine said with a smile. Zeke blushed and sank lower in his chair. Tanya merely smiled politely, stiffly. “What is it you do, my dear?” Josephine asked. “Tanya here is the local cyber-doc.”

“Oh, that’s nice. Do you make a good living at that?” Josephine asked.

“Aunt Josephine!” Zeke exclaimed, blushing. He looked at Tanya and Kaelin. “Not every girl I bring over is marriage material!” He blinked. “Um, not that you’re...not…” he said to Kaelin and Tanya. Then he ducked his head and focused on his food.

Tanya stifled a giggle, obviously used to such questioning, and maybe relieved that someone else was the target.

Tanya giggled, watching Zeke turn even redder.

“It’s...it’s nothing, Kaelin. That’s just Aunt Josephine,” he assured his new friend, giving his aunt a look.

Josephine sniffed. “Well, forgive a woman for wanting to see her nephew happy,” she said.

“More wine?” Tanya offered Josephine, refilling the woman’s glass.

Zeke gave Tanya a grateful look. His aunt tended to get sleepy when she had too much to drink, and it didn’t take much.

“Oh, don’t you have family on Level 4?” Josephine asked.

“Aunt Josephine,” Zeke said disapprovingly, trying to cover a bit for Kaelin. “We don’t need to pry.”

“I’m just trying to get to know your friends, Zeke,” Josephine said. “You are out all night, and the only one I know is Tanya, the dear.” She smiled at Tanya, who blushed a bit and lowered her gaze, giving Zeke a knowing look. She knew what he got up to at night. She’d patched him up enough when he bit off more than he could chew.

Zeke also didn’t want to discuss his late night activities. His aunt wouldn’t approve. “Why don’t we clean up and you can go and watch your shows, Aunt Josephine?” Zeke said.

“I need to get going, too,” Tanya added. “Late hours at the clinic can be the busiest.”

“Guess it’s just you and me,” Zeke told Kaelin with a smile.

"No..." Answered Kaelin. "Tis just me."

Kaelin was sure that she wasn't the only one present wishing that Aunt Josephine would cease her self-appointed role as interrogator, well maybe expect Tanya who seemed to be enjoying the spectre. By now Kaelin was beginning to wonder whether she'd be better off taking her chances with the ISS, thankfully dinner appeared to be winding down and people were making their excuses to leave.

Aunt Josephine and Tanya left the kitchen and Zeke cleared the table. When Kaelin made to leave, he said, “I’ll walk you down.” That way they could discuss the job tomorrow, if needed, without Aunt Josephine overhearing.

“So where do you live, anyway?” Zeke asked. “I mean, you know where I live now,” he said with a handsome smile. “Fair’s fair, right?” He made the tone teasing to let her know she didn’t need to share if she didn’t want to. After all, he couldn’t blab what he didn’t know. But at the same time, he couldn’t really help her out if there was trouble if he didn’t know, either.

Kaelin went to answer, then stopped and hesitated. Memories came flooding back of the ISS raid she'd been privy to earlier, along with the realization that the brutes would be kicking down other doors. The grubby, one room apartment that she called home was likely to be on that list and just as likely to be under a close watch. Effectively, she was now homeless.

"Well..." She began a little awkwardly, trying to think of how to explain it. "The hab block where I live got raided by the ISS and they kicked everyone out, ye know how strong armed those brutes can be."

"So, I've just got me hauler...guess I could find a spot ta park up fer the night."

Downtime for A$her means that he is following up on his normal routine. He keeps tabs on his Network of "informants" and brokers deals to disperse information. He follows up on leads and searches for information to broker at a later date. Investments and evading ISS were pretty common routine for A$her.

Having several disguises allows A$her to flow through several sections of Level 4 unhindered.

@Joey aka: Fat Joey has the only means to contact A$her without directly stumbling across the information broker.

“Raided? Sorry to hear that.” It wasn’t too unusual on Level 4, and usually folks could move back after a couple of days. “So you need a place to crash. Why don’t you stay here? You can have my bed, and I’ll sleep on the couch or something. I bet Aunt Josephine won’t mind, and she’ll be out early in the morning to open the store.”

A surprised look appeared on Kaelin's face as her mouth opened and shut a few times. Though she should've really expected Zeke's offer, it still caught her by surprise when he made it. She thought about it for a moment, having somewhere comfortable to sleep certainly was appealing. At last, she replied. "Ye sure? I mean, wouldn't yer aunt get the wrong idea?"

Zeke gave a wry chuckle. “Probably she would,” he admitted. “But it’s better than you sleeping in your truck. At least safer, and more comfortable. And I’ll make you breakfast in the morning,” he offered. “Do you like waffles?” He flashed her a handsome smile.

"OK, fair point." Kaelin conceded. "The prospect o' an actual bed wins hands down."

“You’re in for a treat, then,” Zeke said. “I’ll show you to the room.”

Zeke led Kaelin to his bedroom. It was small. The bed took up most of the space, and there was a closet built into the wall. “Sorry about the mess,” he apologized, clearing some clothes off the bed. There was a shelf nailed up with three books on it. “Um, I guess you can wear these.” He put a clean set of sweatpants and a Coalition Youth t-shirt on the bed for Kaelin. “Anything else you need?”

“Well,” Zeke said, shifting his feet. “I guess I’ll let you get ready for bed, then.” He went to the closet and pulled down an extra pillow and comforter for himself. “I’ll be, uh, on the couch if you need anything.” He backed toward the door, giving the young woman a smile before he left.

"Uh, goodnight." Kaelin replied, giving Zeke a weak smile. "Hopefully I should be fine."

After Zeke had left, Kaelin closed the door and looked for a way to lock it or at least stop it from being opened without effort. She also put the clothes Zeke had got out for her to one, she just didn't feel comfortable wearing somebody else's clothes. Then she took off her cap, jacket and boots before laying down and making herself comfortable on the bed. It was nice and a little weird to have a proper bed, she was more used to sleeping wherever she found a halfway decent spot. Truth be told, it was the first case of real kindness she'd ever encountered.
