TW Staff of Boost/Lower Trait

Post by Beowulf85 »

Item one of my players requested, I have no problems with it but figured I would run it by the board.

TW Gizmos (3)
Staff - Boost/Lower Trait (2 PPE, Duration 3 (1/round))
Dmg:Str+d4 Wt:8 Parry +2, Reach 1, 2 hands
Salt Shaker of Healing (3 PPE)--covered with small crystals and copper wire, this clear, empty container channels the Healing Power. When activated, the shaker fills with multi-colored lights that swirl about. Soft, soothing music, like a music box emits from the device.
Whistle - Summon Ally (3+ PPE, Duration 3 (1/round))

Boost/Lower Trait is normally a ranged spell. I can leave it that way, but I was kind of thinking that it would be neat to have the option to reduce the range to the reach of the weapon in exchange for a bonus to the opposed roll.

I was thinking maybe, if casting the spell, the user would roll on their TW skill rather than the fighting roll. The staff would not do any damage as an attack, because the goal is to make contact with the target--just a trapping of casting the spell. The caster would have a +2 to the opposed roll vs. the opponent's Spirit in exchange for the reduced range. Kind of a focused casting, if you will.

Basically, an option to trade a 10" range for a 2" range for a +2. What do you think?

I know this is late to post, and you probably already included it but here is my 2 cents anyways.

I will have to review the TW rules in greater details, but a staff on it's own does not make a TW item. For it to be TW, it should be technical in nature. Maybe a Bio-Comp device?

Or even a weird Rube Goldberg box that looks like a defib device strapped to the back of the armor and attached via wireless pads to the skin. Has rose and clear quartz, ruby, and an emerald in place of buttoms, and a rose quartz on each of the wireless leads. Gems and a device that has the function you want to implement are core to TW items. Look at Qoat in group 1. His stuff is different, but follows the same kinds of rules.

Where is this at?

Is it in use in a game and thus approved or is it still waiting on feedback?
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

As a note the Iconic Image in the book has a TW with a TW Staff. See page 107 for reference.

With no response to where this is at after 2 weeks I am moving it to abandoned.
