A Fine Solution: Welcome to the World 3 - Scouting

Post by Beowulf85 »

The team makes slow but steady progress through the bogs and marshlands surrounding the Mississippi. In three days of exploration the group sees and learns a lot. The place is as beautiful and magical as it is unpredictable and dangerous. Ley lines crisscross the river and you encounter a number of small to moderate nexus points, potentially useful finds and certainly worth charting. The magic in this area is so saturated that the water glows with it at night.

By day, wood and water sprites flit around and through your party, sometimes being so bold as to hitch a ride on a vehicle if they think no one’s watching. They seem to particularly like the shiny glitterboy. Initially none of you can be sure, but it soon becomes apparent that they are deliberately dancing at the edge of your vision, trying to make you wonder if they are actually there or if you are just imagining things. Whether you find them amusing or annoying, they are ultimately harmless and non engaging, avoiding direct contact but enjoying teasing the group.

You also see your share of predators, but traveling in a large, well armed group full of big machines has its advantages. Those creatures that are animalistic in nature hardly want to engage something bigger and meaner looking than themselves, and those that are intelligent, including pirates, CS patrols, and even the occasional demonic being, know not to start a fight they can’t win and give you a wide berth if they see you at all.

Summary of first applicable rolls from each character:
Leonidas Survival 4, Notice 8
Spellweaver Notice 14, Detect Arcana 20 (done)
Chevy Notice 11 (done)
Ulrich Notice 9, survival 3 (done)
AwkTec Notice 0, Electronics 7, Engineering 15 (done)
Zima Notice 5, History 6
Jaxus Notice 14, Survival 3 (discussed with GMs how to deal with separate bonuses for sight and sound, took the first roll for both) (done)
(wow, raises, raises, and more raises)

Leonidas has some wilderness experience, a good thing too because it soon becomes apparent that all others are lacking. On the way to the Mississippi he’s able to bring down a large buck and flavor it with a few natural local herbs which keeps the company in fresh and delicious food for a couple of days. While travelling the river he’s occasionally able to get some fishing in on breaks and catches a wide variety of fish, unfortunately attempts to set up a drag line to passively fish while travelling are futile due to the dense growth throughout the swamps. He adds some valuable flavor and variety to the company’s diet, despite his somewhat stoic nature.

For Spellweaver the sheer quantity of magic in the area is often entirely overwhelming, and the variety of magical life forms are equally astounding. On the first day of travel he makes the group’s first particularly (and incredibly) valuable discovery, a hidden patch near a small nexus containing a variety of magical plant life. At the centre beneath the nexus is a plant that he had only heard of and never thought to see, a brain tree. It is surrounded by a number of cobra vines and would take a specialist team to safely harvest, unfortunately the group is not equipped for such a task. However, on the fringes of the magical clearing are a few easily harvested dagda’s sceptres, two faerie’s cauldron’s, and a snapper heart.
Sceptres: Roll 1d4+2
(OOC: Roll knowledge Arcana for each of the three plants to see if you personally know anything about how to use them, requires at least a raise. If not then you know they are powerful and valuable to the right people, and potentially very beneficial. For the curious, see Palladium Rifts World Book 3 p. 33 onward).

The second pass turns up another couple of fantastic finds for Jaxus and Ulrich. Along the shore, concealed in some reeds and not too far from each other, are two recently beached vessels, one CSN Mark I Barracuda (Coalition Navy, page 59) and a Triton Patrol Boat (Merc Sourcebook P. 119). Both appear to be run aground with moderate damage but they could be salvageable. Blood stains the decks but, judging from the orientation of the on board weapons, they probably weren’t fighting each other. In addition, their on board computers went offline a few days apart. It’s likely they were each taken by some kind of predator that may or may not still be in the local area. A quick examination of the ships reveals a lot of salvageable equipment that could be of use to the Legion. There are a number of grenades (five of choice each). Jaxus is able to quickly grab a CS or NG rifle and pistol of choice along with a non magical melee weapon of choice (the pirates were carrying kinsentite, melee weapons composed of an alien mineral which is comparable to any vibro blade but it deals +3 damage), and Ulrich is able to mark a flight system from a Super SAMAS as well as a mortar he should be able to install as personal salvage rights for when the Tomorrow Legion are able to send specialists to salvage the ships.

Towards the end of the day Leonidas and Zima happen to notice the tip of an old steamship. The ship is still 95% buried but it looks to be the kind of thing that would have been carrying cargo on the river. On the deck they each manage to find 1d6+2 1 carat diamonds scattered amongst the wreckage valued at 15,000 credits each. In the edge of her mind Zima remembers hearing that there were diamond mines in the area hundreds of years ago, there may be more buried in the wreckage, along with who know what other kinds of ancient pre-rifts artefacts.

When the group settles for the night Jaxus and Ulrich volunteer to look for some food. An hour later they bring back a bushel of purple wild berries they found growing nearby, and go pale when Leonidas informs them that the berries are toxic. He’s not sure exactly what the effects are, but no one should eat them. A day later the duo find out why. They tasted sweet going down, but they feel like fire coming out the other end.

On the end of the third pass, the first pass on the east side of the river, Chevy makes a phenomenally lucky find. A peculiar ley line storm has temporarily restored a small section of Memphis to what it was before the coming of the Rifts. One of the many museums is partially brought back in to existence, but only for a few moments. The opportunity is simply too great to miss, and he’s able to make off with 1d4+2 original vinyl albums of choice, along with a guitar and a pair of drumsticks, each signed by their respective musicians and bands (all player’s choice, perhaps even display copies of diamond/platinum/gold records). Touching the items anchors them to Chevy’s timeline. AwkTek is the second to the scene and the only other to make it before the storm collapses back through the rift. Unaware that time is limited the young dragon’s attention is quickly drawn to a retro style jukebox filled with various records (no significant value beyond being popular pre rifts music from the 1940’s), an original Wurlitzer Model 1015 in pristine condition (will need to arrange transport in someone’s vehicle).

OOC: Some excellent rolls and role playing mean some great prizes. I hope no one feels ripped off in comparison to anyone else because holy hell you all rolled high. There will also be some sort of finder’s bonus after the mission, likely only worth a small fraction of what you turned up (some of the things I named are worth millions), but it’s still going to be substantial for all your characters. I wrote this under the assumption that you didn’t stay in a tight group during the entire scouting operation, and that some groups would have formed on a daily basis according to character’s abilities and unwritten terrain challenges.
Also, combat is coming, but I didn’t want to unduly interrupt the role-play and character formation. I’ve renamed the previous thread accordingly.

+1 benny to each player

Snapperhearts have a stimulating effect similar to a pure and powerful amphetamine, have an equally powerful come down, and can be very addictive if taken regularly. This magical plant has its illicit uses and can go for 25,000 creds each on the black market. On the other hand, when you first arrived on earth you met a powerful technowizard from Kingsdale, Isaac Magnus, who was attempting to research a new variant of TW juicer. He may be willing to make a trade for a powerful TW item, or possibly some other magical tokens if he has the right connections. If you can't find the time to go to Kingsdale yourself you ought to be able to find a way to send a message to him once you get back to Castle Refuge.

The jukebox is an interesting find that AwkTek at least brings back to their base camp. It is a machine but one he is unfamiliar with so he goes to find Chevy and see what he knows about it.

Upon returning to camp with Zima, he calls out to the rest of the party, "Here, catch!"

He tosses one of his diamonds to each other member of the party, then holds the last one up to the light. "Not sure what they're worth, but I figure we could all use some extra cash at the end of the day." With an almost unnoticeable smirk, he pockets the remaining diamond.

I think your math is bang on, and you probably saved some lives, or at least saved your team a week of agonizing recovery while stranded in a hostile wilderness.

Sharing wealth and being a team player is very in character for a cyber knight, go ahead and take a benny for staying in character at very high cost.

Chevy is positively beside himself on recovering the half-dozen vinyl records. He makes sure to secure them in the cargo area of the Bop. His mind whirls as he tries to calculate the price he can fetch for them, on the condition he gets a copy of the music in them back.

When AwkTech shows up with the jukebox, he sees Chevy actually fall to his knees in awe, tears in his large eyes. Chevy spends the next few hours reverently and carefully disassembling the machine for easy transport.

Looking up from the jukebox break down, "Ulhrich, I was sure by Leonidas' excitement that it was valuable. My problem is I have no storage space. My trunk has no trunk." Taking the diamond of the hood of the Bop where the disassembly is going on, "Here, why don't you hold onto it." AwkTek drops the diamond into his gloved hand. "Thanks."

With the diamond secured and Chevy well into the innards of the jukebox, AwkTek leaves Chevy and Ulhrich at the Bop and heads off towards Spellweaver.

"Uh, excuse me Mr. Weaver. I could smell those," AwkTek points to the herbs, "the moment you brought them back here. What are they?"

AwkTek laughs at Spellweaver, "It is not the fragrance that I smelled. It was other things that attracted my senses. You are one of two that deals with things outside the physical realm." AwkTek in his little boy form points to Leonidas.

"If I am to learn anything about other worldly things, I need to do so from those who know. You and Leonidas are such persons."

"Also the look you get when you look at those Heart Snappers makes me think you have someone outside of Refuge who might need them. I could speed your travel there and save you the time of walking."

Having spoken more than he normally does, AwkTek kicks at the dirt with his bear human foot and stares at the ground, feeling awkward.

Jax wanders just ahead of Ulrich as they get closer to the river. "Ulrich, there's something metal down by the river edge. I'm going to check it out."
He briefly closes his eyes and activates his stealth programming sub-routine and then, like a ghost, vanishes into the overgrowth.
Jax quietly parts some vines and with hand on vibro-knife, steps out on to the beach.
"There's no one here but there are a couple of boats. Looks like some potential salvage though."
He heads towards the more military looking boat and begins searching around.
"Hmmm... whoever owned this boat must have been caught unaware. There's dried blood on the boat and the weapons look unused."
Jax finds a CP-50 "Dragonfire" rifle, a C-20 laser pistol, 5 high-explosive grenades, and a combat short-sword of some bizarre material.
"Heyyyy. These look to be nice upgrades!"

Before he leaves, Jax boots up the computers on the CS boat and attempts to learn who they are, where they came from, and what their mission was.

Back at camp...
Jax's eyes go wide as Leonidas tosses him a diamond.
"Leonidas, this is some serious gift. Are you sure? This is going to make a nice addition to the old Jaxy upgrade fund. You know what they say... better living through cybernetics!"
Hmmmm... or is it just me who says that, he thinks to himself.

Jaxus doesn't find anything particularly exceptional in the computer. The CS ship was a member of the 3rd fleet on a routine patrol between Fort Girardeau and Fort Houston. The last log entry shows that they were making their return trip and the troops were looking foreword to some R&R.

*note* discussing exactly how to incorporate Kisentite weapons, probably not a straight +3 bonus. More likely bonus armor penetration.

Ulrich found the mortar and jump jets and marked them for his personal salvage. The specialist teams will recover them and bring them back for him, not time to salvage or equip them when just passing through and no effective way to transport them yourself. (Most characters got stuff that wouldn't be useful until after the mission is over).

He also got 5 grenades of choice, and everyone got a benny.

Ah, my bad.
You stumble upon a grove of apple trees, perhaps the remnants of a small private orchard from hundreds of years ago. it doesn't take long to pick enough fresh apples to keep everyone eating more apples than they probably want for at least a couple of days. Luckily, apples store well, are easy to travel with, and can be eaten on the go if someone wants a snack.

You also happen upon some wild cilantro and mint that could add a change of flavor to the normal provisions or garnish whatever fish Leonidas is able to catch while on break. At the moderate rate of travel it's fairly easy to hang them from your vehicle to dry, at least when you hit an area where the sun isn't blocked by trees. The patches are fairly large and it only takes moments to grab several bunches of each, easily enough to use in cooking (or tea) for the rest of the journey. In addition you can set aside some to use fresh for the next couple of days, but it will quickly wilt without proper storage and refrigeration.

You feel confident that this attempt at foraging has gone better than your previous attempt.

Ulrich goes to everyone in the camp and gives them a few apples to have in addition to their normal rations. He actually is enjoying himself on this little journey with new people and that is what does not sit well. Nothing goes this well in this world. Ulrich makes sure to never let his guard as any moment a supernatural predator or some raiders could appear. Both of which would try and ruin your day.

Still Ulrich keeps a smile on his face as life should be enjoyed in the moments of peace that you can grasp at.

This is one of those moments.

AwkTek accepts the apples and thanks Ulhrich. Looking at these small orbs in his front right claw he decides to play a game. For target practice he shots a thin flame stream at the apples as they fall after he tosses them in the air. Ten minutes later AwkTek is smelling roasted apples that now lay in his front right claw. This time he decides to catch them as they fall so Awk Tek tosses them 20 or so feet in the air, so they are merely pinpoints in the sky. Ten minutes later he has eaten the roasted apples and is liking the sweet juices from his claws and off of his snout where he missed a couple when they fell.

Having had some fun, AwkTek notices Ulhrich standing, just standing. AwkTek walks carefully with just enough noise so that Ulhrich knows he is coming.

Tanya approached Ulrich during his watch--not, perhaps, as silently as she might have liked. As she stood next to him, watching the perimeter, she offered a small metal flask, her long, unbound black hair teased by a gentle breeze.

"It is not liquor," she said, by way of explanation--and reassurance that she wasn't trying to get her CO drunk. "I have felt a need to address something with you, Corporal," she began slowly, uncertain with how to proceed--but determined to do so, even if it was an uncomfortable subject. "The Germans are enemies of my people where I come from. They follow a dangerous man who called them to invade my home: I was fighting them when I was brought to this place and time. My ... understanding is that the Coalition has built itself on the memory of this man." She sighed, gathering her thoughts for the next phase of her confession--such as it was. "That war was a long time ago--for this world, and for me. And you and I have both chosen the Tomorrow Legion." She favored him with a brief, sheepish smile. "What I mean to say, Corporal, is that in spite of any ... residual discomfort, you have my full confidence, as does the rest of the squad." She paused again, staring into the distance thoughtfully. "Twice now have I lost what I knew as my home. If I were to spoil a third because someone--a good man in himself--had an accent that reminded me of a bad time long gone and far away, what kind of fool would I be?"

"In mein years uf life I haf discovered several zhings. Von uf vhich is humanity in it's self is foolish. Vhen you mix peoples whom are used to von anuther it takes time to adjust. Zhis makes zhings harder in zhe begnningk but is actually a great strength. It makes a people versatile und ready for a vider array uf situations und encounters."

"Ve must rise up above our fears und baser instincts in order to not become zhe very thingk zhat plagues most uf man kind, an irrational rabble fearful uf it's own shadow. I haf noticed you vere keepingk your distance Specialist Zima und I did not vant to pry. I figured you vould tell me vhen zhe time vas right. It iz true zhe empires uf our past vere bitter enemies but ve are not our past or even zhe present empires, ve are individuals tryingk to be part uf zomezhingk bigger zhan vhat ve could do seperately."

"Zhere iz at least von great empire currently on every continent zhat iz fearful und xenophobic az zhey vere in zhe past but I refuse zhe laws uf madmen who vould harm mein fellow man und creature out of ignorance und prejudice. Zhis I zhink ve haf in common. Az a time traveler, much uf vhat you know is lost history. I am sure many scholars vould love to sit und speak vith you to gain some knowledge uf vhat zhe time before zhe great openingk vas like. Untill zhen..."

Ulrich hands Zima back her flask and smile.

"...I vill be zhe von whom makes sure you live long enough to do so. Let us vork in building a new home for you so zhat you may never haf to lose von again."

Ulrich convulses a little and begins coughing. He pulls out a handkerchief to cover his mouth until this bought passes. A few specks of blood can be spotted by an observant person on the rag as he quickly pockets it and pulls out a flask. After a few gulps of his ale he sigh with a smile looking over at Zima.

"So you are a time traveler eh? How longk ago did you come to zhis realm?"

Tanya nodded and smiled: from the start, Ulrich had seemed to live up to all the good and noble things she knew of his people, without embodying any of the more negative stereotypes she had grown up learning. Undoubtedly, he had his shortcomings that she'd discover in time: everyone did. But he seemed so far a man she'd be happy to serve with.

"I've been here ten years, give or take a bit. I'm still not sure if the place I came from is this Earth, or only one with a similar history. Regardless, I grew up some time before what we now call 'the Golden Age'. It was a turbulent time ..." She trailed off again, thoughtfully. "I was only sixteen when I volunteered with the Red army--barely more than a child. I learned to fly and maintain the primitive airplanes we used. After three years of fighting, I was drawn here, and found a different life. The players and tools are different--but the strong still prey on the weak." She took a drink herself and drew a sigh. "The village where I lived--after I arrived here--was watched over by an old soldier who defended them with the Glitter Boy armor that had been passed to him. He spoke some Russian--and fortunately for me, he took a liking to me. I learned all he was willing to teach me, and when he recognized it was time for him to retire, he ... passed the armor to me."

Her tale plainly skipped quite a bit, glossing over as it did ten or more years of her life. But more than that, she seemed reluctant to address certain obvious questions. Still, she didn't excuse herself quite yet.

Ulrich listened while looking out at the vast swamps they had yet to explore.

"Zhere are many theories on zhe subject uf time. In von, it iz said zhat vhen you travel from von time to anuther it creates two sepereate vorlds as every event und decisions marks zhe creation uf a new von. So if zhat theory iz correct zhen your vorld iz not zhe von of your origin but zhe von you personally haf under your feet as your leavingk made von vorld und if you vere to arrive back it vould make anuther, in a manner uf speakingk."

Ulrich smiles

"But zhat iz a more philosophical conversation zhat iz to be had over drink"
