A New Place, But Where?

Post by Ndreare »

As the team agrees to a plan the Shifter prepares himself. The warriors move forward Rob Hunter and Sir William providing an amazingly clear line of approach as the demons are destroyed and recreated in such rapid succession the two move as if designed for battles like this. The demons flames growing more intense as the battle moves on eventually they appear to swarm Rob Hunter enough he is simply bathed in the flames of battle and the armor cannot be seen under the demon swarm.

Sir William moves with the deliberate motions of a well practiced warrior his wounds not enough to stop him from defending the arcanists as they approach the well of energy in the center. Leethe immediately behind him clearing out any demons that make it past Sir William with enough skill the arcanists are not only unscathed, but they are able to get in without so much as a scratch.

The efforts of the trio to seize control of the well from the Shifter on the other side is hard fought. The Shifter and the line Walker’s efforts complimented by the Techno Wizards magic perfectly. As the shifter suddenly feels his attachment to Hell being compromised he struggles to regain control of his power but fails. The gate finally spinning open allows the team to move through into a new world. The heavy cloud cover and lack of radio signals makes it hard to identify where they heroes have landed as they look around.

What must be the shifter whose energy was seized to come through is lying unconscious on the ground next to a fire with a small sub demon standing over him filling his coffee. The demon laughs at the shifter dancing on his unconscious body singing something in demongogian in apparent total joy at the pain his master experienced.

Suddenly looking up the demon notices the heroes regaining their bearings and blinks out of existence with a squeak.

The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

Sir William opens his hands, allowing his psi-swords to vanish. "Well done," he congratulates the arcanists. "Is this Earth, do you think?"

As the heroes look around the wilderness confident the Shifter is right that this should be Rifts Earth their only challenge remaining is what to do with the unconscious shifter and how to get home. In a world this dangerous leaving him alone and without any power to protect himself could be as good as a death sentence.

OOC Comments
Survival -4 (-2 if you have a survival pack) to identify your relative location.

Optionally: Are you staying to protect the shifter until he wakes, or are you leaving before their is trouble?

@Neeto Cogcoil looking around this seems like pretty standard wilderness. While it is the same kind you have seen around parts of Northern Europe, or North America, it also reflects the wilderness of Palladium, and northern Shaintar.

He looks down at the shifter. He doesn't seem to take issue with Nash's method of awakening the man, but he holds up a finger to signal Nash to stop. He whispers. "Hey, check this out!" He extracts a bit of the goo from his jello wall ejector and places it, gingerly, in the shifter's open hand. With a stifled snicker and gleeful grin, he hands Nash a feather. "Tickle 'is nose with this. That jelly will wake 'im right up! Or it'll get stuck in 'is nose an' he'll choke on it and die. But it'll be funny!"

The shifter starts to struggle as he comes too until his eyes catch sight of the Cyber-knight. "What is this about? Are you here to steel my supplies so you do not have to buy your own meat?" Looking around at the others he notices they do not look to have the same honor as the Cyber-knight and his tone changes. Looking at Nash and Foxx he says. "I don't want trouble from you people. We know someone stole my magic and I can see yours welling in you."

Notes & Instructions
As a shifter even without PPE he can still use his Detect Arcana at will.

The obviousness of his words are clear. He is completely out of PPE (after all you stole it) and your group is about half full on PPE/ISP.

Unsure if speaking is the best answer or not the shifter takes the Cyber-Knight for his word. "I am a summoner, it is what I do. I learned the twelve names of hunger from my masters book and have used them ever since.

"But I am not a murdered, I use them for this harvesting work normally.
" He points towards his ATV laden with harvested meat and pulp from what looks like a some sort of alien creature. "You don't understand, even my link to Quzzrt was broken from whatever the demons did to break my connection. He is running around here and will likely be up to no good. I need to be allowed to recapture him before he starts eating. He will never be satiated."

OOC Comments
Survival roll +0 will identify the meat as being from rhino buffalo. Survival packs do not modify this roll.

Neeto snickers. "Quzzrt? I made a D'norr elemental mage make that sound one time. You should'a seen it! He thought he was all high'n mighty 'cause he liked flingin' lightnin' bolts everywhere. I rigged up an arc conductor behind a goo wall that I mocked up into a dummy, made it look like it was gonna get 'im. He shot it, the goo soaked the juice, the conductor arced it back at him." He laughs. "QUZZRT!" He slaps his knee. "He was MAD! His horns were all black from shootin' 'lectricity out of 'em."

The shifter looks offended as if something Sir William said was ridiculous. "No, I did not. I found a demon on this world and bound him. But whoever stole my power on the other side of the gate released the demon. We need to stop him, the more he eats the more powerful he becomes. You do not want a fully fed Magot running around, they are nothing but trouble."

It takes little to identify or realize that The 99 were the ones who tapped into his power well and used it to come over. In a way this makes the 99 partakers in the release.

2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong.

Leaning back as far as possible hoping not to be sliced in two. "My sight is how I track them. Maybe your friend there can do it." As he nods his head towards the shifter on your own team. "I would guess he is eating my profits right now." He says looking back towards his vehicle with longing.

Looking at the marks on the ground Nash can see the occasional trial from the little guys sprint away while invisible. As he follows the trail he can see it lead to the other side of the wagon where the little demon is happily eating his way through the larder.

Looking up and seeing Nash the demon hisses and...

Caught off guard for only the briefest of moments Quzzrt begins to move, but not before the spell sinks into his bones...

With a fierce roar Quzzrt jerks up into the air and screams, his words spoken in Demongogian are hard to even listen to. Then with a deep breath he lets loose a gout of flame on Nash, then turns and flees into the woods as fast as his little stubby legs can carry him.

A blue glow surrounds Sir William as he leaps into action, his shape blurred as his psionically-driven muscles charge the demon. His Psi-Swords appear in his hands and he slashes out at the demon with each. One misses, but the second strikes home, carving into the demon's flesh with a hiss.
Result
One attack at 6 probably hits for 20 damage; otherwise, it's a grazing blow with no effect.

The demon seeing the blow coming at the last moment rolling to the side it scream out in demongogian, then its voice echoing slightly in American. "Mercy, mercy, give Quzzrt mercy." But somehow the demon is not foolish enough to stop running from the demon slayers who incapacitated his master, freed him and then came in from hell. whatever demon slayer goes to hell for their business is too much of a demon slayer for Quzzrt to want to fight. Flashing out of sight the demon appears again nearly 60' away before continuing his sprint.

Assuming Leethe's to be on hold based on amount of time that passed.
Still bleating for mercy the demonling continues running away. "Mercy, I swear I will never shed mortal blood or harm a mortal. Please Mercy!" It screams in a terribly thick version of American accented strange enunciation.

Seeing Leethe point out the demon, Sir William spins and moves at blinding speed, trailing flickers of blue light. He charges the demon and slashes with a blade in each hand - the demon dodges out of the way of one attack, but directly into the path of the other. "Back to hell with you," cries Sir William as his psi-sword carves demon flesh.

11 AP 4, Actually +4 as your weapon is holy so it also ignores 50% invulnerability to all non-magic and regeneration.

So 2 wounds
The creature struck by the blow staggers and falls to the ground injured. His belated cries sound like those of a small child more than anything demonic as it tries to recover its senses.

Moved by the creature's pitiable cries, Sir William hesitates before finishing the demon. Seeing Leethe approach, he says, gruffly, "See if that shifter can banish this creature back to Hell. If not, I will deal with it."

Hearing the option of being banished as opposed to being cut into little pieces Quzzrt says. "Please, please, I will not resist. Go straight to hell I will." His pleading for mercy like a whining child more than a threatening demon. It hard to remember looking at the thing that given a chance this creature would begin eating and not stop until it devoured the world.

Nash walks over to the demon and mutters a few arcane phrases. He holds his hands up and they crackle with mystical energy. "Be. Gone."

He releases the energy and it flows to the demon. A moment later, it winks out of sight, vanishing from this plane.

RFT wrote:L.C.'s stumbling through hell was not without its points. After what seems like days, but shows as nothing on his clock that refuses to advance L.C. sees what he believes are the 99 in a battle trying to get through a rift.

The rifts snapping closed and open after the team makes it through leaves L.C. with only one choice. Making a run for it he jumps through the rifts during one of its snaps tumbling clear into wet soil surrounded by brush and trees.

L.C. comes to an abrupt halt on the trunk of a sturdy tree and blacks out for a few minutes. When he comes to, he shakes his head to clear it and immediately regrets it. Rising to his feet, he immediately takes a reckoning of his surroundings.

Sensing the familiar patterns of some of the 99s, he keys his radio. "99's, this is L.C. Coming up on you. Who's the new folks?"

Coming up on the group, the Psi-Nullififer looks over the assembled. Looking to Nash and the Shifter, he nods. "Sergeant Charles with the Tomorrow Legion, commander of the 99 CET. Good to meet you all." He looks to the others. "What's the situation?"

As L.C. tries to gain his bearings his arcane awareness alerts him to a battle close by. Going in that direction L.C. sees what is left of the 99 standing together looking relieved to have banished a foe.

Likewise, the 99 turn and see their Sergeant approaching.

Turning attention back towards the shifter from earlier he ca be seen trying to sneak away. He freezes once he realizes attention has been brought back to him and plops down to the ground without ceremony obviously frustrated at the situation.

Sir William gestures at the shifter. "This... individual was consorting with demons to obtain food and supplies. We took advantage of the portal he created to return to Earth."

Looking around still worried about the actions of the others, trusting only Sir William to be honest the Shifter replies to the questions guardedly. "Your on Earth, in Dakota, about 5 miles from Ashley.
"I am Calvin, Calvin White, The food and supplies are just mine. I collect them and sell them to the people in Ashley.
"I needed the help from the demons for fighting the Xiticix. Quzzrt was my guard, I used him because he did not sleep and could alert me to when the bugs where near.
"Indicating Sir William, he asks the knight. You cannot kill me, I haven't hurt anyone and your a cyber-knight. Your supposed to help people like me."

As he is answering the questions a shining sentinel can be seen in the distance, score of yards away. Apparently the sound of battle has attracted the attention of a Glitter Boy.

L.C. just shakes his head. He looks to the others. "This is why the C.S. fears magic users. Have a threat? Let's use another even more evil one to fight it. They won't *ever* come back on us. Have you thought about seeking non-evil, soul sucking aid? Like once?" L.C. sighs. Unfortunately, even if he can't condone their methods and lack of care for civilian non-citizen casualties, he does understand their position. Idiots like this one bring horrible monsters to earth without ever thinking about it. "Let's see, Dakota. That should put us west of our previous location. Once we can head out, we can get to where our ride and gear is and decide what we're going to do. Sounds like we may need to get a legion team up here, or maybe see if the Lyn-Syrial or Cyber-Knights can help. A xiticix hive is no joke and not something we'll be poking without a lot of need and preparation."

Seeing a Glitterboy in the distance, he glances to the shifter. "Friend of yours, or someone looking for you?"

Just then, a voice crackles over the radio on an open channel.

"Hailing Cyber-Knight and his team. Are you in need of assistance? This is Glitter Boy pilot call-sign 'Slapdash.' What are you all doing out here? Don't you know the weather sucks this far south of Lazlo?"

Anyone who has paid attention in their briefings at Castle Refuge will recognize that line about the weather and Lazlo as one of many identification codes Legionnaires use to identify each another in the field. It's an older code, and it's generally used to denote a Legionnaire in trouble.

From inside her Glitter Boy, Maggie prepares for any response from the group in her sights. A Cyber-Knight is a good sign, but after Tolkeen... well, just having a Cyber-Knight around doesn't mean what it once did.

Neither does having a Glitter Boy pilot, she muses.

Hearing the code phrase, Sir William responds with the appropriate counterphrase. "The weather may suck, but the beaches are amazing. Sir William Mahan of the 99s here. Request you rendezvous at our position. Be advised - we have local intel of Xiticix in the area."

Legion! But... what is another Legion group doing out this far?

"Copy that, @Sir William Mahan, and glad to meet you. No idea what another Legion group is doing this far out, but, yeah, you could say I'm well-acquainted with the Xiticix threat in the area. I'm heading your way."

She approaches the group cautiously, keeping an eye out for any signs of ambush or deception. Upon arriving, she tells her AI, Steven (off the radio, of course), "Keep the car running. If this turns bad, I want to leave in a hurry."

She arrives where the group is gathered and steps out of the armor (which is to say, she literally steps out of the armor without opening it, appearing through its chest) and lands lightly on her feet. "The 99s, you said? How long have you been out in the field? We haven't heard anything about you guys in months."

Maggie is physically unimposing, wearing black, combat-style fatigues with a gear harness and carrying a wicked little sub-machine gun that looks like it could've hopped right out of the golden age.

Other dimension? That explains some things.

To Leethe, she says, "Other dimension? Which one? On purpose, or Rifted?"

Sir William Mahan wrote: Tue Apr 30, 2019 4:58 am "Missing for months? Curious - what is the date"? Sir William is taken aback, wondering if their time in Hell flowed at a different rate than time in Earth.
She gives Sir William the date. "To be fair, it's not like I asked about you guys the last time I was at Refuge. But I know in the Fourteenth we haven't... hadn't heard anything about you guys on the gossip wire in a while."

Now that she has a chance to look at the team up close, one of them looks kind of familiar. She could swear she's seen @L.C. before, but she can't quite place him.

"Okay, so, introductions. I've met Leethe and Sir William. Who are the rest of you? I'm Maggie, but on the radio I usually go by my call sign, 'Slapdash,' in case that's more your thing. I was attached to the Fourteenth, until very recently."

Maggie's eyes go wide and she temporarily to forgets her current situation. For a moment, she's a little girl again, living at that orphanage, alternating between hating and loving the other kids, always hating the orphanage... and there's L.C. The kid with two first names who had bought into the propaganda hook, line and sinker, but who still seemed to care. He had been weird, even by their standards. But had she been any less weird?

"Sergeant... Charles? How... I never would've bet in a million years you would end up in the Tomorrow Legion. You were all in, man. What happened?"

Her emotions are all over her face, but because they are confused as hell, it's tough to actually read what she's thinking.

L.C.! Here?!

On her radio, she broadcasts on a private channel to Steven, Steven, did you hear that? Can you confirm? Check your personnel files. Is there an L.C. attached to the 99th?

The response comes quickly into her earpiece, just one word. Confirmed.

Well I'll be.

Steven communicates via the radio. "Those are some of the more common names of the four demon princes who command much of hell. They have been to earth multiple times in the past under other names and are predicted in many religious texts.

"Almawt ahn khadae it roughly translated as the deceptive death. But refers to the demon prince of death. Harb is the demon prince of war and destruction. He both serves and wishes to surpass Death. Jue was the demon prince of disease, pestilence and destructive desires. While Marad is the demon prince of unfilled desire, or hunger. Most often called famine in American texts."

After a brief hesitation Steven finishes. "It is highly unlikely there is enough worshipers on Earth for any of these beings to be able to manifest in their full power on earth. Even a fractured manifestation would create a highly unstable point in the local environment bridging many hells they have already touched into the place they are manifesting. Such a thing would b observed by any arcanist in the vicinity."

Maggie, looking confusedly determined, holds up her hand. "A moment, Sir Knight. There may... it may be too late for that. I don't know." She shakes her head vigorously, like a dog trying to shake off water. "Too much crap bouncing around in here," she says, pointing at her forehead.

Looking at the rest of the team, "He said Wheaton. Weren't you guys supposed to be around there? What did you see? And how did you end up in whatever hell you just popped out of? Could it maybe be related?"

She looks at @Nash. "You look mage-y. What do you make of all this?"

  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong.

Hearing your interest to go to the Castle Calvin speaks up. "I won't go to the castle. But there is a ley line not far from here that goes through the castle. I could phase you to about a mile from there, then we both go our own ways."

The damned bugs ignored him, like he was a long-lost relative, and he did a number on us. I... wasn't in this armor then. I had a different suit and Heather... well, she wasn't suited up, yet."
Maggie fights back a tear.
As he realizes what she means, he nods. "Damn Mags. That's rough. Sorry to hear that." His voice is low and consoling, but his eyes have a dangerous sharpness to them. Those in the 99s have seen its kind often enough, and ironically so has Maggie. Though back in her day it was some bully, not an extradimensional threat so massive it had its own mythology.
Maggie wrote:"Anyway, Caleron got away, near as I can tell, and those of us who survived the ambush kind of disbanded. Nobody wanted to go back to Refuge after that."
To L.C., she says, "Refuge isn't any kind of place anyone should want to be right now."
"That depends on what you want to do. Me, I intend to tear down the bastards doing this to the place I've sworn to protect. I will not have the Legion tarnished because of some godlike assholes want to try and end the damn world - again!" The words have changed, but L.C. truly has not. Who he includes in "the world" has expanded, but the same zeal, fervor and inability to back down from a bully is there.
Sir William Mahan wrote:"Sergeant, the Tomorrow Legion exists precisely to provide hope and a better future. Can we stand by and abandon everyone at the Castle to this demonic force? How is that different from walking away from the orphanage in Wheaton?"
"Have no concern Sir William, I'd no more abandon them than I would any of you or indeed, the children at the orphanage. We'll do this, but we do this with a bit more strategy than last time. Much more recon, and concentrated fire tactics. None of this wild man all over the place crap."

He glances to Maggie. "You know, I was wondering if we'd find some heavy artillery. Care to save the world with us? Turns out the 99s are looking for a few good heroes. As Calvin here has said, there is evil in the heart of the legion that needs to be excised."
Calvin wrote:"What does it matter to you people if I find another planet. Will it sadden them not to be able to murder me?" His nod includes each of you who has threatened him.
L.C. concentrates and pushes a sense of calm and backs up his words with imagery of his sincerity to help persuade the shifter. He specifically uses this to help Calvin understand that L.C. means the best for Calvin, as long as he turns from dealing with demons and other evil creatures. And this from a man who used to hunt men like Calvin.
"I mean if you want to run to another planet or dimension, we can't really stop you. Ok, I can, but that's neither here nor there. Given you were trying to figure out a way to help folks, I think you just need an education in the right thing to do. We can help you in that regard. I mean, I used to be one of the most feared search and destroy commandos for magical threats in the Coalition. If I can see a way from that to helping refugees of the war I helped fight, I think we can help you figure out a way to not use demons and help your fellow sentients. And it doesn't even involve fighting on the front line."

L.C's normally stern demeanor is almost soothing and caring as he speaks.

Calvin nods listening. The delay last for a minute or so as he thinks on it. It is obvious he is still fearful from the expressions on his face. "I can help you guys or a while. But I am not a warrior, I won't fight these demon host and demon kin."

Maggie shakes her head a little sadly.

"You haven't seen it yet. But you will, I guess. And I guess that's probably something along the lines of what Heather might've said... and given that this is, was her suit, maybe that matters more than it should."

Maggie straightens a little.

"But if we're going to Refuge, we need more than just us. You've been to the castle. You know how tough it will be to fight anything that's entrenched there, which is kind of the whole point, isn't it? Do you guys have backup somewhere you can call on? Friends? Gear? Weapons? If you want to go get us all killed, I'd prefer to do it with a better equipped squad than what I'm seeing in front of me, no offense. Heck, I'd prefer a better equipped army if we can get one."

He nods to Calvin. "There are plenty of logistical things you can do that don't involve fighting on the front lines. But like I said, if you draw extra-dimensional help, you need to aim more for angels or elementals than demons. It's a place to start."

He looks to Maggie and nods. "We've got our APC, my SAMAS, my Warchief, and a friend of mine in Wheaton, so that is first stop. Plus I want to see if everything went like it was supposed to after we banished that desecrated place out of there. And a good friend of ours and the Legion is there as well, and his very well equipped shop is available for purchase. Plus it's a single rift from the castle. It'd be a good staging area. From the sounds of it we may have to take it back though. Still, if I know Brison and the others, they'll be at least holding their own, if not holding it all."

"What does it mater to you people if I find another planet. Will it sadden them not to be able to murder me?" His nod includes each of you who has threatened him.
"I don't know if it would sadden them. I had no intention of killing you. Only to restrain you until we could determine what was going on but it is too late for that. I have no intentions of harming you now. You're use of planet versus world confuses me though. You're use of planet makes me think you want to goto space." Leethe look up at the sky. "Not sure if that is a good idea."

Looking at Leethe he answers her. "Sure, you could use world also. But when you travel as much as I have then planet is more fitting."

"Whatever suites you then, I've been quite the traveler myself. Shall we get this trip on the road then?" Leethe gesters in some random direction. In a flash of light, her powered up form dissipates.
