Shanghaied In Lone Star

Post by Devek Ragaa »

Consciousness was fading quickly, and in that time-stretched moment Devek finds himself reliving the events that led him to this unfortunate turn of events.

The Tomorrow Legion had ‘accepted’ him, though it was clear he was an outsider at Castle Refuge. It was hard for anyone who had experienced the wrath of the CS, to look at a former special forces soldier with anything other than fear and disdain. He might be able to get around the worst of that in time, but it’d always be lurking. Truthfully, he hadn’t done much to help matters. The Legion had offered to upgrade his gear, but he insisted on keeping his worn Deadboy armor and CS issued weapons. Some in the Legion undoubtedly felt he was displaying some level of reservation of abandoning his past.

That wasn’t really it though. Devek wore the armor as a taunt against his former home. The armor was clearly defaced and modified, to the extent that it wouldn’t have been allowed by even the loosest CO in spec ops. It was a visual call out to any CS soldier who saw him, a clear sign that he was a deserter. He was daring them to come for him. And come for him they had it would seem.

He’d been sent down to Lone Star to assist a survey team, seems they were running into heavy vampire activity much farther north than typical. He’d traveled most of the way with a SET, but had split ways about 150 miles away from his rendezvous point and continued on foot by himself. In his days with the CS, a squad on foot would have been expected to make such a march in 5 days and be combat ready when they arrived. Devek did it in two. He slept less and moved faster than any troop they fielded. Only Modified Men managed a better pace, though they rarely possessed the discipline to be reliable.

As he approached the rendezvous, he was surprised to see the Legion MkV already there since he was almost a full day ahead of schedule. Falling back into old habits, he watched their camp and activity for hours. Seeing nothing to warn him off, he finally radioed in his half of the call and response. Getting the correct answer he covered the remaining mile and met the team. They were friendly, chatty, and apparently happy to have specialized reinforcements. In hindsight, he’d become too at ease with them. As night approached, they offered him a bunk in the APC so he could get rest with a proper roof over his head. Entering the MkV he saw three men he hadn’t met or seen yet. He quickly realized three others had followed him in.

If he’d been the soldier he was before, he never would have ended up inside the APC. He’d have seen all the little things, he wouldn’t have dismissed the slight idiosyncrasies that should have screamed Coalition. He spotted them all now though, everything clear as day as if a curtain had suddenly been pulled back. Without waiting for them to act he pulled on the raging river contained in his obi and sheathed his body in an aura of fear. Devek lashed out at the soldier to his right, a solid strike which shattered the man’s sternum even through the concealed armor. Even as the first dropped like a sack, he kicked back at the man behind him. Connecting weakly with his stomach, though painful the awkward angle had prevented it from being a killing blow. Still, the contact was enough to transfer the dark energy Devek was channeling and the hardened soldier ran screaming into the night.

Then the blows started raining down. In the open, he’d have never stood his ground to let them counter but here in the APC even his reflexes couldn’t keep him out of harms way. Eventually, one of the batons connected, and a surge of electrical current passed through him. Then another. After the sixth he felt the stab of the injection point as everything started to go black.

Devek awakens to the sounds of men crying out as if hell istelf was consuming them. It is a bit muffled, and diluted with a slight rhythmic beeping noise. He is inside some kind of vehicular storage area, probably the mkV, the air is stale smelling of sweat and he is not alone.
A CS private drenched in said sweat is looking at a medical monitor whispering to himself, "No... No... I got to keep him under, captain Zack said keep him under. Frak, which button is it!”
