Design Help - Patreon Item, But not Arcane

Post by Ndreare »

Gentleman's Gambler
A gilded six shooter pistol made of fine craftsmanship. It has a silvered and gold filigree decorating not only the handle but the barrel. Legends say it was commissioned for Luke Short in 1876, and has passed from hand to hand of a true gentleman and gambler.
Base stats: range: 12/24/48, Damage: 2d6+1, AP3 semi-auto, six shots, +1 to shooting rolls
Minor: extra accurate, and armor pericing( both facotred into base stats line)
  • The Undertakers Friend(Major): it gives the weilders the ability to measure accurately the height of any body preparing them for a casket size. The gun also ignores up to 2 pts of to hit modifiers
  • Monkey Shines: A true eccentricity, when the gambler pulls the trigger he really never knows what he is going to get, unless he sacrifices a bit of himself into the action.
    • Every shot roll a d6, if using semi auto roll 2d6 for the below random effect. Special: you can take a level of fatigue to choose the effect below or 2 levels if semi-auto firing.
      • 1) Super natural killer: the bullet can harm those whom have a weakness against a super natural sub type.
      • 2) Flame gout: the bullet takes on all the special effects of plasma and deals +2 damage
      • 3) Righteous Silver: The bullet takes on the qualities of being both holy and silvered
      • 4) Quick shot: The user can take an immidiate second shot with this weapon.
      • 5) Extra powder: the weapon does an extra 1d6 damage for 1 round.
      • 6) Undertaking: Any would delivered by this bullet cannot be healed during the golden hour.

EDITED TO ADD THE WEAPON ABOVE AS DESIGNED BY PENDER: Minor edits to formatting.

I have a player who wants his Patreon weapon to be an awesome pistol.

Right now I am thinking to use modified the enchanted items rules and basically giving it four bonus features. But I would like advice on how to make it something more than just a +X shooting item.

Current Idea

Major: Sturdy Construction - This weapon is immune to technical difficulties as long as it is kept in maintenance once a week. (Basically like an AR this thing can be pulled from a bucket of mud and still fire)
Major: Unknwon - I need an idea
Minor x2: Holographic Laser Sights - this weapons exceptional accuracy is aided by the clasic styled holographic sights with a bore calibrated laser. +2 Shooting

It is important that the item is something possible without magic.
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

Some possibilities:

Far-Shooter: Powerful scope and precision rifling (along with a slightly longer barrel) give this gun x2 the normal range for the model. However, to be fired within the gun's normal 'Short' range, the scope must be removed, or suffer a -2 penalty. Removing/replacing the scope requires one action. The scope also provides infravision, with the usual effect on illumination penalties against heat-generating targets. Total package adds +2 to the gun's encumbrance.

Anti-Theft Measures: The gun's grip has a biometric system preventing it from being fired by an unauthorized user. In addition, it has an internal tracking device that reacts to being 'pinged' with a coded signal (so it's not just constantly emitting the signal). The device works within a range of five miles.

Scary As...: Largely cosmetic modifications to the weapon make it seem even more menacing than it is, including a 'screamer' whistle that can be triggered with the press of the wielder's thumb. In most cases, this gives the wielder a +2 to Intimidation checks.

Scan-Resistant: This weapon can pass through scanning machines undetected; furthermore, it has an unusually slim profile and specially designed holster, giving a -2 penalty to efforts to spot the gun with an active Notice roll. (Doesn't really help with a pat-down, but is useful for walking through a crowd without setting off nervous security guards.) Not suitable for rifles.

Beautiful craftsmanship: This weapon uses exotic materials and exquisite engravings, turning it into a piece of art as much as a tool for killing. It gives the bearer a +1 to Charisma rolls, or +2 so long as the person they are speaking to has at least a d4 in the skill the weapon uses (it takes some degree of familiarity with weapons to fully appreciate the effect).

Of course, the HJ table has other options you could tap. Even some Edges could be emulated (specifically, Quick-Draw, with a spring-loaded holster to snap the weapon into the wielder's hands.)

It needs a story. Tell me the story of the gun, what makes it special. Was it the last pistol help by an Erp? Was it a prototype NEMA pistol " Petite Boom"? Throw that down and I'll help you craft something epic and full of pure awesome sauce :)

The pistol is a relic of Baron's mentor a Gentleman Thief/Gambler named Lord Faris. My big thing is that I want the gun to be worthy of someone who seeks out the finest things in life. The gun came into Baron's hands during the raid the two were making on a Coalition Depot during the Siege of Tolkeen. Lord Faris was killed during the raid, but not before the two of them managed to basically escape. (ie. Lord Faris was shot and died of his wounds afterwards.)

My 2 cents on the sweet gun, change the "semi-auto" tag to "revolver" and edit the Monkey Shines ability to still roll a d6 for random effect of the bullets or take on 1 level of exhaustion to choose. On a Rapid Fire action or "fanning the hammer" you fire all 6 rounds at -4 to each shot to hit(only -1 thanks to the guns craftsmanship), and roll d6's to randomize the effect as normal. Or take on two levels of exhaustion and become shaken to choose all 6 effects. Now you're really putting your body and soul into the weapon to steer the hand of fate :) if you want to change it I'd also tweak the 4th roll to be something like - Miraculous Reload: always ready to send your foes to meet their maker, the the gun automatically reloads itself after you fire.

Tim had some good feedback from the 99 chat, so I posted it here for him.

If Baron likes it I have no problem with number 4.

Please let me know what you would like your final gun to be so it can be submitted Baron.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).
