Old Farm

Post by Corrigon »

A few miles out from Garnet Town is the old Hutchinson farm. This farm has been abandoned for a few years.

The farmhouse is dilapidated, with partially boarded up windows with boards starting to fall away from the frames and a slate roof with several holes in.

The vegetable garden out front is overgrown with weeds and the occasional hardy potato.

24 hours ago, Langdon had been dropped off near the edge of the Magic Zone and had slowly made his way towards Garnet Town with the instructions of finding out why the FOM was interested in the town. He knew there was a leyline and nexus nearby, but where it entered the Magic Zone, the City of Brass had a force led by Zargus the Great sat on it, so he had to travel on foot rather than via the leyline to avoid unnecessary entanglements.

As he travelled along the river towards Garnet Town, he passed by an old abandoned farm (description above). As he did so, he could smell a slight smell of burning of plastic and metal from behind the farmhouse, two materials that were not in evidence on the structure.

Approaching using the farmhouse as cover, he can see a burning Big Boss ATV from his vantage point. Two men, one wearing plastic man body armour and the other a suit of adventurer armour are being held at gunpoint by two Brodkil, (one with an extra cybernetic arm), the mercenary of choice for those without much conscience. Both men have their hands bound behind their backs and on their knees. On the floor near the ATV lays another body currently smouldering in the dirt. The Brodkil look very unhappy with their captives, shouting at them a lot with what you can make out through their demonic accents about why are they here? Are there anymore coming?

As he watches, the Brodkil with the cybernetic arm screams at one of the captives, who spits in his face defiantly. The Brodkil reacts badly to the defiance, bringing his rifle to bear and blasting the captive through the head.

The other captive (wearing the adventure armour) looks petrified and tries to shuffle away from the Brodkill, but the non-cybernetic one grabs hold of him and pushes him back.

As you stand next to the building, you feel an odd presence inside; something supernatural resides in the farm house and you don’t like the feel of it.

You currently have half cover from having to look around the corner, but the structure is made of wood and won’t provide much protection against their NG-L5’s.

What do you do now?

Notice 8 - raise
Notice: [dice]0[/dice]
WILD dye: [dice]1[/dice]
ACE: [dice]10[/dice]
Note: I'm assuming Lang's armor is already powered up and in woodland camo mode since he has been traveling thru the forest for 24 hours; I will lower the armor's current charge to 30min (instead of 60) and set Lang's starting PP at 19 to represent this unless instructed otherwise.
Langdon leans his head slowly around the corner of the farmhouse until he is able to see the scene transpiring with the Brodkil and their captives. When one of the subdemons screams and then shoots one of the bound captives dead Langdon pulls his head back out of view. "Why are they here? Are there anymore coming?" That doesn't sound like something a simple highwayman would say.
He begins a careful retreat back along the outer wall of the farmhouse to consider his options but doesn't get more than one step before he suddenly feels a...presence...through the farmhouse wall and freezes. This complicates things. A lot.
After a brief pause to make sure whatever he sensed in the farmhouse wasn't yet responding to his presence, Langdon's helmet visor appears to turn pitch black to anyone looking at it from the outside as he engages his armor's Shadowsight mode.

Langdon is able to sneak around without the Brodkil noticing him, though they are currently still shouting at their prisoner, whom you don’t hear respond. Taking a moment to peer through the half boarded up windows, your darksight allows you to see the interior of the farmhouse as if it were daylight and anything invisible within. As you move along the windows, initially, you don’t see anything inside, the interior is as battered and rundown as you would expect from the outside. You are able to look into two main rooms, what would appear to be fully furnished, but abandoned kitchen and living room. Cobwebs hang everywhere and the dilapidated furniture is covered in dust, but as you turn back towards the Brodkil, you catch a fleeting glimpse of something translucent out of the corner of your eye passing inside and possibly through a wall.
OOC Comments
you can think of a few possibilities of what might be in the farmhouse, but ghosts or poltergeists would be the main type of creature that would come to mind.
Returning to the corner, you briefly glimpse around, where you only see the two Brodkil and the sole remaining captive, whom one of them is currently holding the captive up in the air, by the scruff of his armour.

The Brodkil don't appear to notice you but continue to interrogate the prisoner. They demand to know if anymore are coming and when. The prisoner looks petrified, but when the non-cybered one points his rifle at him;

"I ain't telling you anything as you'll just kill me anyway," the prisoner shouts at the Brodkil, who respond by aiming their rifles at him.

Your rifle is accurate as you surprise the Brodkil with a blast to the chest, which staggers him.

As you have the drop, you have +4 to hit and damage, so that's a hit, but

Langdon’s second shot caught the cybered Brodkil a glancing hit. It shook its head for a second, some flesh burned off to reveal armour plating underneath.

Neither Brodkil look impressed as they lift up their rifles and return fire, but can literally only hit the side of a barn blasting two new holes through the walls of the farmhouse near your location. Out of the corner of your eye, you notice the prisoner quickly scarper around the side of the burning Big Boss ATV.

The Cybered Brodkil raced around the corner, vibrosword held high.
“I’m going to tear you apart,” it screamed as it charged towards you, but as you had moved back, it wasn’t quite able to reach you proper, your blur spell confusing it enough to parry the blow.

Inside the farmhouse, you can feel the entity's attention turning towards your fight.

Langdon deftly slips past the defences of the confused and distraught Brodkil, his TW Flaming Sword slicing into its side, cutting it down. From around the corner, you can now hear the sound of weapons fire.

WILD dye: [dice]1[/dice]
With his eldritch reserves starting to get low, Lang deactivates his TW sword as the brodkil demon slumps to the ground, dead. He takes a couple big gulps of air to steady his nerves, thankful the dim beast is no more.
That was close...too close.
Stealth 2 fail
Stealth: [dice]2[/dice]
WILD dye: [dice]3[/dice]
He switches to his Wilk's pulse pistol and creeps up to the corner of the farmhouse to peek around the corner to try and see where the weapons fire is coming from and where it is being directed. Lang will also look for any doors on his current side of the farmhouse and gauge whether or not any of the windows are big enough and low enough for him to crawl through if he needs to in an emergency. Primarily, though, he is focused on finding out what the weapons fire is all about. He will also try and judge the amount of time it would take to retrieve his rifle from where he dropped it as well as the status of the ghost-entity.

If he sees the remaining brodkil with his exalted darksight while it is invisible, he will try to trick it by acting as if he can't really see the creature in order to encourage it to be careless and let its guard down so Lang can try and get the drop on it.

As you peek around the corner, you see the Brodkil exchanging fire with somebody behind the burned out Big Boss, not paying attention to you at all.

Behind you, the hairs on your neck stand on end as you feel the energies of the entity within the farmhouse surge slightly as if it had done something.

Whatever the creature inside is, you are not sure what it is doing. For some reason, that bothers you more.

Aiming your rifle, the Brodkil notices you at the last moment, but to no avail as your shot strikes it cleanly in the chest. The shot isn't quite enough to take it down as it slumps to its knees but another shot from behind quickly finishes it off.

"Friend or foe?"
a voice called out from behind the burned out Big Boss ATV, "just because we shot that Brodkil together don't make us on the same side bro."

Good question.
"Friend! At least I hope so," Lang yells to the unseen person, letting the fear and excitement from the fight come through in his voice in order to put the other person at ease. "I was on my way to Garnet Town for rest and resupply when I stumbled onto the scene here. Looked like you needed some help, so I helped." He adds a short laugh at the end.

Lang moves away from the house in order to get some distance between him and the entity inside, but not yet toward the man who shot the brodkil. He keeps the muzzle of his rifle pointed down at the ground to show a non-threatening posture, but still in his hands in case the ghost - or the unknown person - become less than friendly.

“Well bro,” the voice shouted out, strong and confident, “I’m certainly glad you came along. Doubt I was long for this world with those Brodkil, though my colleagues I’m sure would have appreciated you being along a mite sooner.”

A man of average height, with wavy brown hair and shades walked around the side of the ATV. His plastic man armour had a few scorch marks, but was not particularly damaged.
“Just so happens I was heading to Garnet Town myself bro. Needing to find a business partner of mine, so all things considered, would you have an issue if we travelled together. Sadly, I don’t think I can offer you a ride.” He jerked his thumb at what remained of the ATV, grinning as he did so.

Lang maintains his nervous smile as his eyes flick over the stranger's armor.
No obvious markings. Maybe just a fellow traveler? Or a bandit?
"That sounds like a great idea," he says with relief. "My name's Lang. You?" He then holds out his hand for a shake.

After they are finished with the greeting Lang gestures toward the farmhouse and asks, "Know anything about this place?" he asks with open curiosity. "When I was up against the wall during the fight I got a really creepy feeling. Like something was inside. I kinda want to check it out. Want to take a look inside with me?"

Jasper looked over at the farmhouse with a little trepidation.

"Fraid not bro, we got hit just as we were passing by, so its not exactly been on my mind. I want to get to Garnet Town, but if you're looking to go inside, I don't think I want to go in too if there is something in there. Lang winces at the simple wisdom in the man's words. He gives one last, longing look at the farmhouse, his natural curiosity burning to know what exactly was in there. But then he remembers the unease that washed over him when the entity surged with power during the fight and his currently depleted arcane energy reserves.

"Yeah, maybe you're right," Lang concedes. He then searches the brodkil corpses for anything useful or valuable to loot. After that is done is he turns to Jasper and says with a smile, "Onward to Garnet Town!"

As Langdon gathered up the gear from the brodkil, Jasper kept a wary eye out, scanning the area.
It was simple task to carry out for the one that they killed together, but as they moved around the farmhouse to where Langdon had killed the other Brodkil, all they could see was a pool of blood where the body had been and its vibrosword sticking out of the doorway, which struck Langdon as odd as that had been several feet away from where the fight had been.
