Thomas Gladwyn Brown - aka The Medium

Thomas Gladwyn Brown was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was the third born son of Wayne Bruce Brown and Eleanor Alma Thomas, scions of two of the richest families in North America, preceded by his two older sisters.

Growing up, Thomas was regaled by his grandmother of stories of her youth and holding seances with her friends. She told him of their family heritage of great mystic powers and being able to speak with the dead. While at the time these stories just seemed to be fairy tales, Thomas could not but stop and wonder if any of the tales she told him were true.

While he was educated in the finest schools money could pay for, Thomas wasn't the best of students, though he could always talk himself out of almost any problems he got into. The only exceptions in school were due to Blake Williamson, an upperclassman, that decided to pick on the younger Thomas. The best that Thomas could tell for why he was bullied is that Blake was the son of one of his father's business rivals... and that Thomas was always loved by everyone and that Blake was just feared. As the two grew up, Blake took every opportunity to bully Thomas. Not long after Blake graduated, his father's business interests suffered a severe setback due to Wayne Brown's actions, and Blake did not take it well. While he didn't have the resources to go after the Brown family, Blake never forgot the attacks on his family holdings.

A few years ago, Thomas started hearing Ghosts and eventually he was able to start getting them to do things for him. With the power this gave him, he could have leveraged this and his inherited riches to take over a large portion of the real estate in New York, but instead he met up with his new friends, the Wrecking Crew, and is now trying to clean up the streets.

Thomas's wealth is tied up in investments that is under the control of his financial advisor, and Thomas is totally hands off of the investments so as not to use any inside information that he may come across... and if the MCB should ever look into his financials, it would be untouchable by them... the better to afford a good lawyer if that should come to pass.

  • 2D6 EFFECT
    2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

    3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

    4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

    6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

    9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

    11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

    12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

This whole concept is amazing and fun. Lots to play off of, also being the financial backbone of the op is a great thing to have.

I am not rejecting the force field and mind shield. I just need you to explain the concept to me on how ghost can protect your body and mind.

The Force Field is Thomas getting the Ghosts to manifest to weaken the attacks on him by blocking the attacks. Ghostly limbs and other body parts may become visible during this time. Since Force Field needs to be concentrated on, and he also took the Activation Limitation (He needs to roll to activate), I thought it made sense.

The Mind Shield is the large quantity of ghosts in and around Thomas, making it hard to lock onto his mind... and the minds of the dead can be a not so friendly place for those not used to it (for the feedback)
