Instead of the typical —> you gather in a briefing room and get to know each other before getting your orders —> I’ve changed the backdrop. A meal with farmers who need some help as you are on your way to your first assignment. This is an open RP & get to know each other post. After you all get time to interact I’m sure a mysterious thing will happen and you’ll need to step up as “heroes”. For now it’s your post to get to know each other. - Lars
In route to Paragould (Arkansas)
  • Recently hired as mercenaries and sworn into Larsen’s Brigade you and seven other new recruits got fresh ID badges and hot orders. Take the well worn dirt road from Kingsdale to just outside Paragould. The trip should be able to be made in just under two days (one night).

You set out. You have an escort consisting of one human female Crazy introduced to you as Mercy. She has a Mark 2 APC and any who need a ride can grab one in the APC.
    Image

As you understand it, Larsen’s Brigade has been paid to fight a war in a skirmish taking place outside Paragould, something to do with, for rights to the mining there.

Your orders are: Get to Larsen’s HQ outside Paragould and report in for duty. You signed on in Kingsdale and need to travel to the main force of Larsen’s Brigade.

The first day of travel is uneventful. As night approaches Mercy pulls the APC over to the side of the dirt roadway, and pops the front drivers door and excitedly waves to two men standing on the side of the road with one horse laden down with supplies.

    “Father Barns! Georgie! Hello again!”

Jumping down from the APC she turns to look at the rest of you.

“We gotta spend da night sum where. An Father Barns wife can really cook!!”

As the younger man pats the horse, calming it, it appears a little set off by the female Crazy’s enthusiasm, the older man, Father Barns smiles and waves. Both men look humanoid though they have light blue skin and yellow eyes. D-Bee’s for sure not originally from Earth.

“Miss Sergeant Mercy. How pleasant to see you again. Please. If you are close to resting for the night. The misses is cooking dinner. She is also baking Apple pie! You and your friends are welcome to stay in or around the barn and of course join us for dinner in the house. Also, uh, we found a odd … thing in the corn fields yesterday. No idea what it is but Mayhap it’s of use to you? ‘Pears to be of tech design an ya know we avoid technology.”

Mercy jumps up and down, claps her hands and salutes Father Barns.

“Yes Sir! Ya had meh at Apple pie! An we o’course will take a look at the odd thing ya found in ya fields. Lead on Father Barns.”

Returning to the APC the next ten minutes is Mercy driving at about 5 mph following the two men and their horse.

You arrive at a homestead. There looks to be about three large barns. Six houses. One well. And a whole bunch of corn fields. Several Ley Lines ripple by the area, one actually cuts through one of the corn fields.

Mercy stops the APC next to a barn. Turns it off and jumps out to follow Father Barns towards a house.

“Come on! Behave and come join us for dinner. If’n ya need, that’s an order. Let’s both enjoy pie and see what the thing is they’ve found.”

Gathering in Father Barns house the nine Larsen’s Brigade members and sixteen family members, all are of the same light blue skin nature, gather for dinner. Each of the six houses have large families and Father Barns seems to be the elder, or leader of all families of farmers. Dinner is absolutely splendid and desert, the apple pie, to die for!

You learn that the small community was saved by Mercy and other members of Larsen’s Brigade a few months ago. A roving band of sub demon Brodkil were terrorizing the community extorting food and gear. They were stopped by Mercy and her former crew of mercs.

Talk eventually turns to the odd thing the community has found.

Father Barns tells you that, it was tangled in the roots of an old stump he finally got around to tearing out of the ground this morning. At first he thought it was just a piece of pre-Rifts junk or a time capsule, but now he isn’t sure what it is.

Actually, he would very much like it if you would all take it off his hands as he and his community tend to avoid technology. The odd item he has dug up, he tells you, is a black box with a few doohickey’s and blinking lights. It is about the size of a dresser drawer and is in the shape of a metallic tube.

”Writing on the side of the tube says something like, hmm … A dash 1 capitol C dash two zero nine two capitol X five oh nine capitol A dot capitol R dot capitol C dot capitol I dot capitol E dot dash One dot Prototype.”

One of the young girls at the table says: ”Pa-Pa has a fo-do-graphic-ic memory! He reads us books every night from his mind!”

    The other farmers smile.

Like Father Barns said, you can have it. Otherwise the community was about to re-burry it and forget it.

There is one very odd thing about the device Father Barns tells you. He and a few others in the community are able to feel mystic “magic” energy.

Father Barns says: “The thing definitely radiates magic energy. We had a community meeting to vote on if we should harness the devices power, but ended up voting to burry it. However, I know the elders would prefer that you took it away from here. That would be better. So. Come morning, it’s all yours, if you’ll take it. Come daylight I’ll take you to it. For now I got a few stout sons, including my oldest Georgie, guarding it out in the east corn field.”

Sixteen men, women and children of various ages enjoy a nights dinner and entertainment with you, Mercy, and your new comrades of Larsen’s Brigade.

Come morning you’ll be taken to the strange device. For now, please enjoy your evening at Father Barns house. RP and interact with each other and if you desire, the family of Barns (feel free to invent family members).

Honestly up till now, you haven’t really had a chance to get to know each other. You are all strangers. All you’ve been told is go to Larsen’s HQ, Mercy will escort you, and support/follow orders from Larsen once there.

So RP away. Chat. Discuss. Interact together & with your hosts. Talk about your arrival at the community, and your dinner adventure, etc. afterwards I will describe the morning (unless something happens during the night) and your acquisition of the device. If you decide you have to see the device before bed that’s fine. They’ll take you to it but not just yet. Dinner must be finished and apple pie etc.

Your escort, driver, and enthusiastic new friend Mercy says: “One thing I love is stories and apple pie!”

The same little girls says: “That’s two things!”

Another bout of laughter ripples around the table as plates of warm home cooked food is enjoyed.

Dale helps himself to that delicious apple pie, eating it with evident enjoyment. He's a tall man, lanky of build, with sleek metal arms where normally there would be flesh and blood and the telltale lines of plastic 'skin' surfacing around his neck and shoulders where an interface port peeks out from behind the collar of his shirt. He seems quite soft-spoken by nature; preferring to observe the interplay between others with curious interest far more than speak, though he responds quietly to the questions of the family with warmth and mirth.

"Are you a soldier though?" pries one of the younger daughters who happens to be sitting near him at the table.

To that, Dale smiles and chuckles, a little uncomfortably. "A sold...well, not...not as such. Though I suppose I am traveling with a company of soldiers. I'm going to be helping them with their gear sometimes, and you know, sometimes we'll have to fight people who use machinery...but that's where my skill is."

He helps himself to another slice of apple pie, hardly having touched his actual dinner yet.

"That's where my heart is, some might say," he chortles at some private joke.

Serving in Larsen’s Brigade is a great opportunity to prove myself as not just a worthy member of any tribe of Simvan I should eventually join once I earn myself a reputation, but one that they should bribe with the their best in order to have me see them worthy of me.

"Somehow I don't see Stompy fitting in that APC you have, Miss Mercy, but we can keep up a good speed cross country. We might even be able to help clear some path for you through areas of dense vegetation."

After settling in Stompy near but not too close to the barn, the Simvan feeds the Rhino Buffalo some of the preserved meet that they had hunted up a few days ago. It is always better to keep Stompy full... or he might very well decide to feed himself. Soon enough Berk helps himself to dinner, and eventually the Apple Pie. With a nod of thanks to Father Barns' wife, Berk reminds himself not to smile at the blue skinned humanoids. Most people do not like the sight of a Simvan's sharp teeth with their reminder of how Simvan are not adverse to eating the flesh of other humanoids.

Feeling more comfortable with animals than strangers, Berk spends the evening greeting and grooming the farm's livestock. Knowing that the Barns family would not miss the salvaging rodents, Berk draws some of the vicious looking rat-like creatures out with his mind and then feeds them to Stompy as a treat.

Fields appreciates the meal and makes sure to let the family know it. As the meal concludes Fields offers. "We have some talent with medicine and healing. If you are not adverse I could have a look over your animals and make sure they are disease free. Just a small gratitude."

Heading out, most of the animals problems are common ones around the farm. Split hooves, cows that swallowed barbed wire, chickens with tumors. Walking through them and doing what he can Fields then looks out to the field. "We will have someone go look at it. Not really my area, or I would look myself."

As they head in Fields listens, the family shares the things that are on their minds. It always amazed him how complicated peoples lives get. Thing are just easier when you are traveling. Fewer relationships and concerns tend to really focus down when trying not to die.

Yumi's new squad mates can tell she's not from around here from the things she says and the things she doesn't know, that's for sure. Demons, giant bugs, the skull-faced legions of the Coalition States, all new to her and not that pleasant. She doesn't seem like a hardened mercenary but certainly handles her huge mecha like one.

"Wow, this is really rustic" is her first remark once they park at the farm. She's lowered her mech down on one knee to dismount more easily, jumping down and shielding her eyes as she checks out the surroundings. "Like... REALLY rustic." Hardly any technology at all!

She takes the chance to dress for dinner in her odd uniform, the blazer and blouse and pleated skirt, instead of her flight suit or fatigues. Yumi digs in to the meal appreciatively, her first decent one in who knows how long, maybe since before she arrived her. A bit awkward, but she's open as she speaks with the girls about what they do here while sharing a tale or two from her school days, athletic competitions, romance, fellow students trying to one up each other...

"Do you get a lot of books out this way?" she asks the patriarch after the young girl brings them up. "I have one or two I could leave you, I've read them already."

The young woman in faded baggy attire with a capelet and tattered pointed hat sat quietly as the APC made its way across the countryside towards the unknown Larsen’s Brigate. She had simply lay limp against her seat, swaying side to side like a ragdoll each time the vehicle hit a bump, with her blank expression making barely a motion with only the occasional blink to indicate that she was still alive.

The cracked texture of the skin across her face, suggested that she had been a burn victim a long time ago and was feeling the effects of it to this day. The attire, manner and visage created a somewhat disconcerting package that seemed out of place with a group of aspiring mercenaries, but it wasn’t the strangest thing when considering the current state of the world.

On her shoulder a large fluffy raven squawked with a more cheerful deposition, seeming to focus on keeping its talons clutched on the human girls shoulder so that it could remain in its regal upright position with each shift in the road that presented itself from Mercy’s driving. The black feathered creature remained vigilant even has his perch slowly drifted off to sleep for the rest of the journey until they had eventually made their way to the farmstead.

From her seat at the table, Claudia quietly ate her food as she listened to the conversation around her, the blue skinned creatures seeming to be somewhat put off by her appearance and lack of joy-val demeanour. That was save for when one of the children ran up to her to offer her a plate of pie, seeking attention from the unattended stranger at the table.

The blank stare returned to the small child as the pie was assessed, where Claudia asked him in a raspy voice. “So, you have come to offer a slice of pie have you?” The worlds came out with cold judgment as she took the plate in her hands. “What now? Should I express to you my appreciation? Do you honestly think you are deserving of such a thing? Well... Do you??”

The table then went silent as the child looked up at her with a wide eyed tremble, uncertain if he had accidentally poked the hornets nest.

“Then....” The strange woman paused for a moment. “You would be correct in thinking such things. This pie is delicious, thank you.” Came the equally chilling reply as she nodded politely to the creature and started to ravenously eat at the pastry. Stopping a moment before looking at her hosts stunned expressions directed her way.

“.... What is it?” She asked, a confused look on her crumb covered scarred face.

Stiff and sore from the day's travels Sparky is more than willing to follow the Crazy along with the others to the D-Bees homestead for a welcome home cooked meal. For the most part the Dwarf is more than willing to let the conversation flow around him as he tucked into his meal which he enjoys immensely.

At the mention of the device, however, Sparky's interest is peaked. "A device you say? And a prototype? That's very interesting. I wonder what it could be? Obviously it was an experiment of some kind if it's a prototype but how old is it? For all we know it's been in mass production for a hundred years."

A toothy grin splits his beard as he contemplates the D-Bee's find. "Oooo, you don't suppose it could be some kind of explosive do you? Hey Sarge, you think it might be a bomb? All kinds of ordinance gets left laying around all the time. And it radiates magic too! A magic explosive device! Haven't seen one of those for a while. Not since the war."

At this point Sparky is practically rubbing his hands in anticipation of getting a look at the "bomb." "I have tools in the truck. Just say the word Sarge and I'll have that sucker disarmed in no time! Oh boy, oh boy!"

The big man, standing close to seven feet tall, who has been telling everyone to call him Ox had been quiet for most of the journey. He was still getting used to live away from Atlantis and being free. In his own mind that was why he had signed up for the Brigade, to have at least some form of order to his life. He had spent most of the trip so far riding with Mercy in her APC, keeping an eye out for any dangers, or any other things he hadn't seen before.

Now that it was a bit of down time, he was feeling awkward. That is, until the mention of tube and associated box the farmer had dug up. He stepped over next to Sparky and smiled as he took a bite out of a piece of pie. "My friend, if it's like a lot of tech that's just been dug up, then it might explode even if that wasn't the original intention. I too would like to get a look at it. It would definitely be nice to get back to working with machines after all the time away..."

Sparky snorts at the giant's remarks "Sure, sure, it could just be some old, unstable tech but that's no fun. In any case we'll just HAVE to open her up to take a look. No sense risking putting in the transport until we're confident it won't go boom after all."

With that last remark Sparky splays his fingers mimicking an explosion and chuckling before looking up to notice the dismayed looks on the faces of some of the D-Bee whose land suddenly contained an ancient dangerous artifact. Putting on his best reassuring face Sparky continues with his best reassuring voice, "Not that it WILL explode or anything. Lucky for you I'm here and I'm an expert at making things not explode when they aren't supposed to." Hoping to seal the deal Sparky gives them his most reassuring smile.

"The, ah...words on it are evocative, don't you think?" Dale asks Sparky and Ox with a bemused grin.

"A-1 C-2092 X509 A.R.C.H.I.E-1.Prototype."

He waggled his eyebrows up and down. "I've seen a few things in the course of my work. Black market gadgets and gizmos changing hands. That object is almost certainly hundreds of years old, and...from this very world we're on right now."

Dale finished his last bite of pie and washed it down with some water.

"2092 would be the year, you see. On the old calendar they used. Prototype means, well..." he spread his hands. "...that it was a prototype. The first of its kind. Now we just have to find out what that kind is. Very unlikely a bomb, I expect. Prototype bombs generally...you know...explode during their shakedowns."

When the squad arrived at the farmhouse, Nerak knew he would not fit into the house. So he stayed out in the barn. It was fine. He enjoyed being alone at meal times. Some people got very upset when they say what Nerak would eat. He tried to explain to them that he only ate those he found worthy in battle. He was not a savage just running around eating people. But they never understood. So he sat quietly eating his meal by himself. Besides this was just dried beef tonight. He had run out of Varigat yesterday. That had been a good fight. It had taken cunning and skill to defeat Varigat. Nerak had honored him well by consuming the strength of his arms, mind, and heart. But now he was out of him. Maybe the squad would get into another fight soon.

Nerak finished his meal and was sitting there quietly waiting for @Fields to come back to the barn. He owed a debt to Fields that could not be repaid. He was life bound. With Fields in the house he could not protecting well. But should Fields call he would level the house to get to him.

Squawk! Arcie, Arcie!” Came a cry from the fluffy black feathered bird on Claudia’s shoulder as the others in the group discussed the unusual find that had been discussed. The girl that he had been perched upon started chewing on her lip with curiosity as the origins of such things and possibilities were passed around by the more technically inclined of the group. She wasn’t exactly technologically illiterate herself, knowing her way around a comm pad and a pistol when the need arose, but in most cases she found herself having little use for it when her day to day was replaced by magic spells. Even the ride in the APC had been strange to her, as the metal box crossed over physical space to get her from point A to B. Her tolerance with the act was both out of politeness and also for the sake of keeping herself close to the others in case anything went wrong.

“So... It is old?” She asked while adjusting her pointy hat while it slipped forward on her head. “That would make it... Almost three hundred years old. Give or take.” Claudia continued to chew on her lip while addressing @Dale just then, her voice coming out with a strange eeriness as she

as to how old the device was based on its reported date, provided this hadn't been some sort of hoax the farm people were playing on them.

Sparky snorts again at @Dale's comments. "Actually Dale, Father Barns said A.R.C.I.E., no H. Perfectly understandable to add in the H but it's never a good idea to give your artifacts a name. Makes it harder to take them apart later. You might be right about that being a date though. I think that is how humans counted years back before the Rifts came. But it also radiates magic and everybody know humans back in those days knew diddly squat about magic so maybe not. It could mean something else entirely."

Going into lecture mode Sparky explains to Dale where he went off course. "I wouldn't get all fired confident that this thing isn't a bomb just because it didn't blow up. One things about bombs is they have a nasty habit of not going off when you expect them to an an even nastier habit of blowing up when you DON'T want them to."

Looking around at their hosts he goes on in his most reassuring tone. "Not that any such thing is going to happen now that we're here. We'll have that sucker sorted out and out of your, uh, hair in no time flat."

Dale gets started on another slice of pie, just watching Sparky with frank fascination.

When the lecture's over, he reaches across the table and shakes Sparky's hand.

"Fantastic," the city-rat says earnestly. "One hundred percent. Lets see what we're dealing with."

As dinner is finished and pie is eaten conversation is focused on what the strange device could be. Pulled out of a gnarled old tree stump radiating a magic feeling. Ancient words written on it hinting at a time before magic was unleashed on earth. The blue skin d-bee’s start putting away dishes and the young are gathered up for bedtime.

Berk, the Simvan, is outside by the barn with his large mount Stompy.

Fields checks the animals health then heads inside the house. Now with those inside finishing desert.

Yumi is inside too. Her offer of books was of interest to the farmers.

The spooky Claudia both scares and excites the blue children. Magic is a way of life for these farmers and the lady in a tall pointy hat obviously knows some.

Dwarven Sparky hopes for a magic bomb.

Mercy, the M.O.M. rubs her nodes and stuffs more pie in her mouth with a shrug.

Ox, Sparky and Dale get to talking about what this old device might be.

Nerak stays outside at barn.

Six inside. Two outside. The sun has set. The moon is high, full and bright. The cool night air a comfortable 72 F (22 C) degrees.

The house, barn and everything in the area shakes violently for about six seconds. The windows of the house let in brilliant light then return to darkness. All the male d-bee’s shake, eyes roll, and collapses to the floor unconscious. A almost collective groan emits from the men.

Nerak and Berk have the best view outside of the light. A blinding light out by the East Corn field. The “earthquake” is unnatural and has no following shakes. Just one six second jarring, at the same time as a brilliant light fills the night sky from the eastern corn field area. It flickers on and then off in exact unison with the rumbling.

The East corn field… where the odd device is… where Georgie and another young man are guarding the strange object that radiates magic energy.

Everyone, inside and outside, hears a loud pop. A booming eruption. Like a two litter bottle of soda (pop) exploding from too much pressure.

Outside, Berk and Nerak see a shadow shoot up into the night sky. It arcs west, then comes crashing back down into the distant darkness. Out by the soybean crops.

Corn field, wheat field then soybean crops. Whatever it was came up out of the corn area, flew over the wheat and landed with a loud thump in the soybean area.

A moment of silence descends over the area.

Only Yumi and Claudia

Yumi
  • Make a Spirit roll save at -2.

Success: You feel a disturbing feeling coming out from the East corn field.
Raise: You also feel the opening of a small rift, a tear in space and or time.
Fail: None of the above. Half your Power Points, regenerate as normal.
Crit fail: Also take one level of fatigue (not able to heal this fatigue, lasts 24 hours) Due to sudden lose of power points.
Claudia
  • Make a Spirit roll save. No negative.

Success: You sense a opened Rift. It’s Pulsing: Every minute, like clockwork, a Pulsing Rift surges with energy and seems to expand like a balloon, and then contract back to it’s normal size. When this happens, a new world or other location is viewable and accessible.
Raise: Above info and you hear in your mind, ”I saw a monster. It took my mommy. Please officer. Help my mommy. Please. Wait. Don’t leave meeeeee!”
Fail: None of the above, except you can tell an unknown type of Rift has opened.
Crit fail: Also take one level of fatigue (not able to heal this fatigue, lasts 24 hours) Due to a strange sadness but no realization of why.
Again Nerak and Berk are the first to hear a sound. From out in the corn field a rhythmic pounding intermixed with a scratching irregular choking sound.

Inside the male d-bee’s are still unconscious and alive. Their wives, mothers and children frantically looking over them.

Fields can see from first observation they look effected by something supernatural and medically appear fine.

Eventually everyone can hear the pounding noise and irregular choking.

One blue skin mother inside suddenly stands up over her husband and gasps.

“My boy. Thommaslin! He’s outside with Georgie watching the device. Oh please. Please go see if he’s alright as I watch over his father!”

As the nine of you mercenaries gather outside the farmers house Mercy, the Crazy and your ride, says, ”Suggestions? I suppose we definitely gots to go check on them two young men. But, uh, this is all pretty crazy huh?”

She pulls out a large Desert Eagle pistol and
Mercy just put Smite on the pistol loaded with ramjet rounds
.

The rustling of corn under the bright night sky is heard by everyone.

Yumi and Claudia involuntary shake.
Vision of a young girl crying and standing in a strange paved parking lot with a brightly illuminated city behind her. Sleek vehicles roar past her with lights and sirens. No one stops to check on her. Alone. She cries. Then as the umteenth cruiser races past her and a mushroom cloud erupts miles behind her she turns to look at you. She wipes her eyes clear. Then says: Banish evil. Deactivate the device. Remove the prison from the device. Throw it through the rift. Don’t. Please. Don’t forget me. I’m so scared. I can barely stop it’s control. Code incomplete. Where is my mommy?

Then the 16 Brodkil sub demons push their way through the thick corn stalks and emerge into your view.

With them is a Brodkil riding a large lizard, the lizard being the source of the choking sounds and it’s rider has a drum it is slowly pounding on with bones.

“We will take the device. Warlord Rekk demands it. We feast on your bones tonight!”

Everyone is standing outside the house. The Brodkil attack. Make your rolls and narrate your actions.

Dangerous Quick Combat Rules
  • Dangerous Quick Encounter
    • If a character fails his roll in a dangerous situation he takes a Wound (or d4 Wounds with a Critical Failure). If he's the driver of a vehicle, it takes a Wound (or d4 with a Critical Failure). Wounds may be Soaked as usual. Success means the hero emerges with only Bumps & Bruises (page 125), and a raise means he escapes unscathed.
After the first round GM will assess the situation. 16 Success needed to take out the 16 Brodkil. Less than that and I’ll tell you what happens in the next round.

Other Rules
  • Ammo & Power Points
    Depends on Encounter
    • Amount expended Per pg 131 SWADE.
    • Or amount is based on your actions (per your narrative).
  • Dynamic Backlash
    Always in effect
    • Pg 138 Crit fail arcane
      • Roll 2D6:
        • 2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”
        • 3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).
        • 4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.
        • 6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).
        • 9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.
        • 11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.
        • 12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!
  • [New] Attribute Backlash
    Always in effect
    • Crit fail attribute
      • Roll a 1d6:
        1. Distracted and Vulnerable
        2. Attribute lowered one die type for 24 hrs
        3. Take 1 level of Fatigue
        4. Take 2 levels of Fatigue
        5. Take 3 levels of Fatigue
        6. No backlash

Ostrosaurus

Similar to dinosaurs, Ostrosaurus stands 12–15 feet tall on its powerful hind legs, with a similar stance as that of a T-Rex. This one is “small”, only 10 feet tall. Its arms, however, are considerably longer and more useful than a T-Rex. Ostrosaurus are alien, carnivorous predators, with impressive animal intellect and high speed—which is why the Simvan love them.

Sparky snarls, bares his teeth and lopes out far enough to have a clear line of fire. "I have a suggestion! How about you kiss my Dwarven ass!" Ripping his Super Laser from its holster he shouts again, "Hey ugly! I got another suggestion! How about we just blow you jackasses straight to hell!"

The launcher mounted under his Super Laser

Pulling up short behind cover he rests his back on the crates yelling over his shoulder, "and I hope you choke on it you jerks!" Then he just grings and in a more normal tone continues, "Ok, that was some lame taunting but I think the grenades made up for it."

As soon as the shaking started Nerak was on his feet. Without even a conscious thought he is suddenly surrounded in purple lightening that arcs back and forth between the massive arms. As he move forward to interpose himself between the disturbance and the house draws Godslayer in one hand and Slasher in the other. As soon as the brodkil emerge from the corn field, Nerak moves quickly to the largest one. With one deft motion he removes the head of the brodkil with slasher then brings the massive godslayer around and slices through two more brodkil. In less than 3 seconds Nerak has removed 3 enemies from the field.

He calls out loud "you have been found unworthy. Your flesh will be left to rot in the field so that the vermin may eat."

On seeing the brodkil coming through the fields, Dale puts a hand to his forehead and blinks rapidly a few times, then looks around.

"Are you guys...are you seeing this? These guys are crazy! What do we...oh, okay, everyone's...with the guns. Okay then. I guess...I guess that's what we're doing."

His cybernetic arms whirred, and extended vibroblades from built-in hardpoints...though he didn't look extremely comfortable in their use. Indeed, his stance with them was a bit awkward.

"Hooray violence!" he offered up as a battle cry, and sort of shuffled into the fray!

For all his uncertainty in a fight, he did surprisingly well though. Partly no doubt because he came off as a low threat target. Most brodkil tried to concentrate on the people who were killing more of them. Even so, Dale did duel a brodkil on the skirting edge of the battle as he played 'goalie' to make sure none slipped past the lines to attack civilians. His defensive game was pretty good, even if it took several slashes with the cyberblades to bleed the demon to the point it couldn't fight anymore.

When he defeated the brodkil, Dale lifted his hands in triumph and shouted, "Ah ha! Victory!"

And that attracted the attention of two more brodkil, which he immediately backed away from. Smelling easy meat, they gave chase...and that was how he spent the rest of the fight, leading those two demons around in a merry chase while calling for help. Not exactly a puissant warrior...but he did keep those two from continuing the attack on others, and managed to keep his head attached to his shoulders. Even if he was visibly winded by the end of it from all the running around and fighting.

"...do you think they have more of that pie?" he asked, gasping in the aftermath. "I'm...we should ask. Later. After we...you know...fix that 'rift' thing."

The unstable energies coming from the corn field were without a doubt a rift of some sort, which any layman could reasonably ascertain based on how it was reacting with the environment. However as Claudia tried to examine the nature of such she was

She was forced to snap out of it however as they had found themselves under attack by the group of demons. ”It is luring them in.” Claudia whispered suddenly, directly into @Sparky's ear as she found herself far too close within his personal space as he might wonder how she found herself behind the crates with him. Perhaps he had been too focused on his grenades.

”There is an unstable core in the device that needs to be deactivated quickly. Can you do this?” Finally taking a respectful step back after she finished whispering the question to him then.

As her words might be contemplated over, the strange girl raised a hand, palm up directly above her as an intelligible echoed chanting emerged from her lips. The act seeming to occur for no rhyme or reason, until the moment that one of the demon figures leapt over the crate to bypass their cover. At that moment, the chanting ceased as a loud and obscene slurping sound came from the very sky above them, sucking the creature upwards into what looked to be a small plate sized

Sparky nearly jumps out of his skin at the sudden voice in his ear. "Sonofa! Where in the nine hells did you come from?" It only takes a moment for him to gather his wits, however, and he focuses on what @Claudia is trying to tell him bringing a grin to his face. "Hot damn! I KNEW that thing was going to blow up I just knew it."

Sparky pokes his head over the top of the crates for a moment just to see what was happening with their friendly neighborhood Brodkil. With all the fire and smoke it was hard to tell but it looked like they were not enjoying their visit to the farm but they weren't down for the count yet either.

Looking at Claudia he points in he direction of the transport. "I can deactivate it no problem but we'll have to break for the transport. I'll need my field kit from the back. Best we wait a few more moments though just to let things calm down a bit and then we'll head out. Don't worry, we'll have that MacGuffin sorted in no time, you'll see."

Turning back towards the house Sparky bellows at the top of his lungs, " @Ox Devras! @Berk! @Fields! Where the hell are you guys? We have guests! Why don't you come say hello WITH EXTREME PREDUDICE!" Attracted by the yelling a fresh round of plasma and laser blasts pepper the crates and Sparky hunkers back down. "Geez, some people just don't appreciate good old fashioned hospitality. Ingrates."

Ox rushed out just in time to see the wave of Brodkil coming toward the farm out of the tall stalks of corn. His eyes narrowed as he reached up and touched the Bloody Greatsword tattoo on his right shoulder. A moment of concentration and the tattoo quickly became a true Greatsword in his hands. "Demons! You shall NOT harm anyone here, go back to the depths where you came!"

Rushing forward, his sword swung right and left, taking pieces out of this creature and that quickly covering Ox in what passed for the blood of the creatures.

Reaching out with his power and empathy he begins enhancing his team mates, as each one becomes a better version of themselves. His own personal efforts seem small a few shots here and there. But the enhancement to his team was powerful.

Fire at the Farm
Fire at the Farm

The thing about energy pistols that do the same damage as 20th century tanks is the vast amount of devastation brought upon the innocent and those in the area.

The eight mercenaries had done fine, point aim shot, hit target. Cast spell, pop demon gone. Stomp. Demon flat.

The same could not be said for the Brodkil that attacked the farm. Additionally these Brodkil were using gun quite a bit bigger than energy pistols.

In only a few chaotic moments the demons were put down. In those few moments the demons had managed to get several hits in on the mercenaries too, luckily superior armor and luck were on their side. No injuries. No ruined equipment.

Unfortunately the farm was in a bit of trouble. Several of the Brodkil had fired on the blue skinned farmers and their homes and the barn. Two of the farms were on fire and the barn was starting to catch fire.

Thankfully no actual farmers or their families were killed. A few had injuries that needed attention but were not fatal.

If the fire isn’t gotten under control ASAP it’s likely the six houses, farm, a two silos will burn and take the surrounding crops along with it in a blazing inferno.

Father Barns, limping from a leg wound, yells: “There! Between the two silos! There is a 20 thousand gallon water tank stored underneath the platform. Quickly everyone.”

Say one thing for Father Barns. Say the man is a peace loving and determined leader. Even bleeding he rushes towards the water tank.

Instructions
You can help these farmers and their families. The fire is just large enough that without your help they’ll likely lose most or all of their structures. (Plus a lot of yummy pie).

This is a quick encounter: Write a narrative of how you help stop the farm, structures and crops from being burnt up.

Depending on how well you do will determine how the next part goes. Because you see…

Georgie (Father Barns son) runs up to the aftermath of the fight. Panting. Hands on knees. Blood on his chest from a laceration. He finally manages to say: ”Brodkil. Riding tech mounts. Took. Took the devise and Thommaslin too! They said they were going to eat us. I got away. A strange blue light erupted for a moment. I ran…”

Information:

The size and speed of the fire and the wounded in the area suggests that all 8 of you mercs are needed here to stop the fire. Afterwards you can go after the Brodkil and get the devise. And save Thommaslin I suppose. That would likely earn you some definite friendship with these pie baking farmers.

No cap on tokens. The more successes you get as a group the better for 1.) how fast you get the fire put out. 2.) how much time that takes you and how much of a head start the Brodkil have when you go after them.

I’m presuming you guys are heroic enough to save the young Thommaslin. I’m presuming you’re interested enough in what this device is to go after it. But. Just in case …

Mercy yells: “Hurry! Save the farm. Then we go after them dang Brodkil!”

Token Count and Results

5-8 Tokens. 40% of things burn. -6 to track.

9-12 Tokens. 20% burns. -4 to track.

13+ Tokens 10% burns. -2 to track.

Before she can even think about it, Yumi's running through the homestead towards her mecha. "I'll move the tank, keep everyone back!" she calls to Father Barnes as she dashes past. She touches behind her ear and transmits to the team via her implant: "I'm going to lift the whole tank and use it to put out the fire. Back me up or watch out!"

She climbs up her kneeling Titan almost as easily as walking down a sidewalk, pushing her head back against the headrest to establish a DNI connection even as the hatch closes, becoming one with her machine. The thermograph paints the situation in ugly colors as she starts moving towards the silos, watching carefully where she puts her feet. Crouching again, she pulls the large tank out from under the platform and hefts it onto her shoulder, cleaning away balance and weight alarms with a swipe of her hand. The Titan pushes a finger agains the underside of the tank, poking through it until water starts to gush out and then she

The ever familiar iconic crackling of the fire consuming the wooden structures behind her caused Claudia’s eyes to widen and twitch as she sat down on the ground on the opposite side of the crates she had just been hiding behind. This time on the side facing the direction the enemy had come from. Her plans with Sparky to disable the dangerous device would have to wait for the time being as they had a more immediate problem to deal with. One far more horrifying than demons it would seem.

The witches teeth chattered as she stuffed her finger tips into her mouth, gnawing on them feverishly as she tried to keep her attention away from the scenario taking place behind her. As visions of being trapped inside of a burning house that collapsed around her returned to her mind just then, lining her every thought as she tried her best to put it aside. Try as she might, she couldn’t bring herself to look behind her at what the others were doing, as the crates shielded her from the heat and visions that accompanied the crackling smoke.

”I say, I should probably be offended that you oft forget about me.” Came a low toned string of thoughts thrumming at the back of Clauda’s psyche. The voice caused the witch to pause for a moment as she focused her senses upon her familiar Kuirilaro as he had taken to flying in circles overhead of the situation. ”Tut tut, perhaps it is best I take over the role of our eyes for the time being. Those cheeky folk and their blasters certainly caused a bit of trouble did they not?”

As Claudia held very still, with her fingers still in between her teeth, she mentally replied back to the raven. Yeh. Show me where to place the rifts, keep our sight away from the flames but to rest on where it could go. closing her eyes then as she verbally chanted out archaic words of magic that would

The hole to the unknown world suddenly began to belch out copious amounts of rubble and sand as it moved in straight lines along the edge of the fields, creating an unnatural firebreak line between the barns and the crops to stop the flames from reaching the yet unharvested yield. Some of it had to be sacrificed in the process as stalks were churned up and destroyed, but it would likely be a relatively small amount compared to an out of control fire that might reach the dry plants.

The entire time she looked through the ravens eyes as the creature guided her on where to direct the open rift as it slowly moved its way through the mess. Thankfully hidden as she was at that moment, the others might miss seeing the sitting figure with its knees pressed against its chest behind a stack of crates that twitched in violent spastic motions while emitting weird echoing magic tones from blood cracked lips that were also occupied with chewing on a set of worn down fingers. Still, while they might not think of her as a demented creepy weirdo this way, they might be inclined to think her a useless coward instead when she was nowhere to be seen at this crucial moment.

Dale was nonplussed by the appearance of a problem he couldn't solve with a neural interface jack and a lot of computer know-how. What did you DO when there was a fire? Call the fire...extinguishing people, right? What if that was you? What did they do?

Water! He looked around, spotted the water cistern and the giant robot already hard at work. Not much his arms could add to that, even being cybernetic. What else?

His eyes widened and he looked around and spotted what Claudia was doing. He ran over to some of the villagers, arms waving.

"Shovels!" Dale called. "We...need to keep the fires from spreading between buildings, so...we can dig trenches and use dirt to make...embankments. To buy time for the water delivery."

When some directions from the locals, he got to work on that! And while Dale was a bit of a stranger to manual labor, his enhanced arms actually pulled their weight. He could carry quite a bit more than his slim frame indicated, and he didn't tire easily!

(A 9!)

Sparky sighs in frustration muttering to himself, "if this were a oil rig I'd just blow the fire out with a few sticks of dynamite but these houses wouldn't fare so well going that route."

Following the others he snatchs a shovel from the tool shed and follows the robot making sure the fires doused stayed out

With no better directions Nerak used his special abilities to help with the trenches. His technique was chaotic at best as he blasted holes into the ground but hopefully it would help.

Jumping off Stompy, Berk aimed his Storm Rifle at the base of the fires, letting loose with whirlwinds and tearing up the burning fires' bases. Berk had faced wildfires in his time out on the planes, and his tribe's standard doctrine on dealing with them was to tear apart the fires' bases before passing through the new opening in the fire through to the back side. It was either that or run away in front of the fire until they would pass a natural firebreak.

Stompy, however, was not interested in the fires, deciding to take the opportunity to eat the Ostrosaurus that the Brodkil brought in earlier.

Seeing Dale already working on fire breaks and the rest working on moving the water Fields looks for improvement opportunities. Small suggestions here and there of how the people can be coordinated, or just letting the heroes manage themselves when on task. He naturally fall into the groove of solving problems.

Looking around for anything else to work with he sees the farm has an old truck sitting by the from gate. Running over and jumping in it he races the truck he comes to help Dale make fire breaks. They definitely needed to recruit someone for fire control, or get a modification on the robot for fire suppression. This is the third settlement this year he had seen catch fire. Lets hope this one does not go down like Kingscross did.

Results of previous posts:
9-12 Tokens. 20% burns. -4 to track.

Nicely done.

Now...
One Player rolls Tracking (Survival). Everyone else can assist providing a +1 or +2 depending on how the dice roll.

It's up to you all who takes lead and who is Supporting.

Success grants the ally +1 to one skill total this round, and a raise adds +2.

A Critical Failure on the support roll subtracts 2 from the lead’s total—sometimes extra hands just get in the way!

Post in any order and decide who's supporting and who is making the Tracking Roll at -4.

A search of the area can lead your group towards the Brodkil and where they are hiding.

Working together, you each help track the demons and find their current location.

Please make a roll and write a narrative on how you are helping track the Brodkil who have the Archie device.

While @Sparky destroyed the ATV, Nerak took a few seconds and centered himself. Once his thoughts were calm he brought forth a mental image of the device from the descriptions of the others. Then use his innate abilities he focused on the energy signature and began heading for the brodkil. Soon he was almost running right towards them. The signature was so powerful even the blind could see it.

Seems like even though these new companions of mine would starve if left alone in the wilderness, they do have some skills that can assist me.

With a quick circuit on Stompy around the small community, Berk is able to find the tracks that the Brodkil left... even after it has been partially washed away. Pointing out the way, the Simvan was able to follow these tracks easily... even with the distraction of @Sparky and the magical smoke he released from the mechanical transport the others were riding in. With @Nerav homing in their energy, @Yumi Overdrive and her sensors, and @Fields helping where he could, Berk was able to concentrate on getting rid of the false trails and learning the lay of the land to be able to travel as fast as possible.

Yumi lets out a little sigh as the last of the fires go out... but then it's back to business. "They can't have gone far, or gone to ground" she sends over the com link. The sensor mast buzzes as she sweeps the area the object was located with her thermograph, night vision and magnifiers, looking for the direction raiders have headed, or at least eliminating some possibilities.

Fields does his best to predict what Berk will need to get the job done. Ensuring the lights do not shine on his eyes and blind him, and reaching out with his power enhancing Berk's senses so he can better search with his powers.

Finding this band should be easy. After all the whole team was learning to work together and even with the mistakes made here, we should be able to get this done right.

”Where there is smoke, there is often fire.” Came another disconcerting whisper directly into Sparky’s ear, where whatever the dwarfs reaction might be, he would find Claudia suddenly next to him once more. With the fire now under control, the witch had been able to convince herself that she was able to move, enough so that she could show up at unexpected times and places, such as the inside of a transport without seemingly coming in through the entrance way.

After

Success and Raise (10)
Repair 1d10!+2: [2]+2 = 4
Wild Die 1d6!+2: [6!, 2]+2 = 10
Claudia stared inside for several moments at the mess of components. Finally deciding to roughly reach a hand through the wires and all the way to the bottom before shuffling around a bit. All the while never breaking her creepy stare off of Sparky, an expression which seemed blank and empty despite an apparent plan being in place.

Finally after several moments, she pulled out her arm to reveal a small fist sized greenish creature with horns that started screaming unintelligible things at her, ripping itself from her grip as it started to run across the room angrily while chattering and pointing angry accusations at Claudia. Without moving an inch, she simply stared at the little thing as it spun around in circles and started knocking things over.

”Gremlins are often found in moving parts.” She explained to Sparky then, glancing back at the mess before reattaching the console plate. ”Try it now.”

Fields was tempted to shoot the little thing before it made other things break. But if @Claudia was willing to let it live when it was something she knew of, then he would be poor in judgment to contradict her decisions with his own rashness. "Those things dangerous to humans, or only to machines?" He asked just double checking.
