2.0 New Del Rio

Post by Technospawn »

New Del Rio
9th April 110 PA
Mid Morning

Pushing straight through would have pushed most people beyond their limits but as good CS troops most of you made it with no problem. You arrive at the city around mid morning. But the trip down was not as easy as you made it look. There was suck but you embraced the suck and have stories to tell now, if you would get killed for telling them.

Write an interlude (Trek) about your trip down and earn 1 benny.
@Runt = clubs
@Checkers = diamonds you find $15k in gear
@Frida = spades
@Klanker = clubs
@Marvin = spades

You have arrived in the city and cleared the gate. You have several hours left in the day but will need some rest soon. The meeting is scheduled for tomorrow at noon in the market. You should have time to get some rest then do some networking.

Ok it is time for everyone to roll.

You can make networking rolls to find vampires in the city
Yes the new sheriff has a bounty on the blood suckers.
Yes the new sheriff has a bounty on the blood suckers, but several city council members are on the take and trying to hinder the bounty program. There may even be hidden blood sucking dens in the city.

You can roll networking to find a place to stay.
You find a place that is only slightly over priced and no one is trying to kill you.
You find a clean little inn off the main path. The inn keeper is a sweet little old lady that absolutely adores you. She is very nice and bakes you all kinds of cookies and pies. When you look closer the inn is protected by a state of the art security system so no one messes with it or her.

Or you can roll to scout the market.
As you scout the market you can tell this is going to be a mess. The market will be crowed with people tomorrow. If anything goes wrong you will be at -2 trying to avoid hurting the civilians.
You find a decent over watch spot and think you can maintain good sight lines on the market but you don't see all the exits. You reduce the modifier to -1
You find a great spot for you and your team to set up. Clear sight lines on all exits and can clearly see anyone coming or going. You reduce the modifier to 0.

You may only perform one action above.

Interlude – Spade – Trek: A difficult obstacle the group negotiated along the way.

The last mile was always the problem, whether one was talking about a train line, power wires, data cables or even a journey across the so called Pecos Empire. Once clear of the leyline storm, the deceptively humid landscape transformed almost immediately into a dry wasteland, marked by the twilight glow of the leyline in their wake that illuminated the night sky.

At around the time that the first signs of dawn crested over the horizon, the sound of a sharp rapid clicking suddenly alerted Frida from the belt of her EBA. The dosimeter she carried with her had alerted her to levels of radiation ahead that rated over nine thousand mSv. Causing the medic to nearly drop the device in disbelief as she scrambled to put her helmet back on, sealing herself shut within the semi protective confines of the sealed armor before frantically calling out over comms.

”Checkers! Stop the APC, the air is hot, I say again the air is hot!” The dosimeter continued its crackling as the vehicle came to a screeching halt, followed by a very wise decision by Checkers to hit reverse and fly the APC back several yards directly to their six. Meanwhile the others who had any sort of helmets or other protections set about rapidly donning them while Frida’s attention was drawn towards the damaged sections of the vehicle. While it was more or less intact, the superficial damage during the leyline storm had caused the environmental sealing cabin to leak, allowing the radiation to trickle in and expose the people within.

The early warning of the dosimeter and fast actions of the kill cat had saved them from a lethal level of radiated wasteland, and while their suits provided some protection against it, prolonged exposure would not be a good idea at these levels. A cursory look through her binoculars revealed the rusty ruined shells of several dropped missiles far into the distance, dotting the bleak and dry landscape ahead of them like gravestones. The deployed payloads having gone off likely hundreds of years before either during the cataclysm or shortly after. Their hostile intent and intended targets long forgotten and erased from history, though four centuries was barely a blip as far as decaying half life was concerned.

The crew had caught their breath as they seemed to hit the border of the death zone, with only minimal levels showing on the device. Still, this no-mans land of immeasurable distance stood between them and New Del Rio, acting as much of a barrier to them as a solid mountain might.

In the end it was Henry that came up with the clever plan to tie Frida’s dosimeter around DV8s neck, using the robot as a canary to slowly circumnavigate the dangerous areas as the metallic creature moved ahead of the vehicle to find which areas were unsafe for organics. Though having the APC trail the walking robot at that pace made progress go to a crawl, it was far better than the alternative.

The slow and steady pace brought the group through the parched land, barren and empty save for the ruins of weapons and power armor that had fought here so long ago. The ghosts of the dead itching at the back of their necks as the crew made their way through in silence. Trying hard not to think about the toxic particles floating just a hairs breath away from them at any given moment...

And as easily as it had started, it was over. DV8 had turned around, giving a soft beep as the robot gave the APC a hearty thumbs up. There was still a short ways to go, the APC speeding up quickly after picking up their metal canary, the end almost in sight. As they departed, Frida looked over her shoulder through one of the windows at the remains of past carnage they had left behind.

“For a pure and clean world. For all mankind.” She mumbled quietly under her breath.

They had hit the ground running on their arrival to New Del Rio. The breakneck speed at which Checkers had circumnavigated the obstacles that had lain in their path had gotten them there early. And while Frida wanted nothing more at that moment than to collapse onto a bed, they still had to secure accommodations. The thought of having to socialize with others made her throat tighten up in fear, there was not a chance she was going to do that. So it was that she let the others handle that aspect while Frida went to

, where the legionnaire Mystic was going to be the following day, or at least that is what was hoped.

Frida was glad that she had, for the place was crowded and she could see quickly that not having a plan in place would be a disaster. Something that may very well come in to play as it was likely that more than just her team were looking for them. Still, she was a military doctor and not exactly a recon specialist so getting a good layout of the area was not exactly her forte.

Snapping a few pictures of her surroundings to her comm-pad, Frida noted that a few of the nearby buildings had attached external fire escapes that they could use to get a better overhead view of the market while finding who they were looking for. It wasn’t a perfect solution but it would have to do.

Satisfied with her results, she activated her radio to contact the others to see if they had found anywhere decent to stay, or perhaps found out something of note in the local area that they had missed (Like... Something to do with vampires for instance.).

The APC rumbles to a stop. Henry jumped out the back of the vehicle and strolled closer to a small oasis and looked around at the small place of beauty surrounded by the desert.

Relieving himself he turned to head back to the APC. As he walked he saw a bit of color on the dull ground. Reaching down he picked up a broken in half wooden box. The box had a colorful skull painted on it. It looked like someone had broken the box in half. As he peered at the box he felt a small colorful skull necklace slide out of one end of the box. It looked like the box had been built to keep two necklaces in.

Henry smiled. He liked it. Placing the necklace in his pocket he tossed the broken box away. His fingers felt sooty and he rubbed them on his sleeve.

An hour later back in the APC the unsettling feeling of bad stomach cramps struck the troops.

Out of nowhere stomach’s cramped. Suddenly they had the chills, felt dehydration, dizziness, fatigue, touching forehead’s felt fever, lightheadedness, and there was a lot sweating.

It sucked. Nothing Frida gave out as Meds seemed to help. There was a lot of vomiting out of windows.

Eventually after a few hours everyone felt better.

Once in New Del Rio Henry ordered the others to scout and investigate. His own stomach still felt unwell and he desperately needed a bathroom.

Henry looked like his bowels are about to explode… Mr. Marvin smiled knowingly and pointed the man to the head. “Careful in there it is quite moist, we don’t want you to slip.” The federation of magic kill squad proved their was more to Grimes than what Lybocc had provided him in the red folder.

Mr. Marvin sniffed the morning breeze. 4 miles south. He whistled for his horse, this time, unnervingly a brown steed, almost donkey like appeared from the brush. “Frida, I need to relieve myself, but when I return let’s talk more about pies. I have this recipe for a lemon meringue that is fresh and bright, and the gelatin oh mmm…. I took my adopted mother’s recepie and added a secret ingredient that makes it zing.” He hopped onto the horse and laughed, “Even Runt would approve.” The sniper rode off southwards. About half an hour he returned. Four miles to the south, a leyline walker human, a burster elf, and a combat mage centaur would be found. The human and elf would be found dead in their sleeping rolls with their throats slit. The Centaur was lying on the ground dead with its brains busted open, and it’s hooves missing, cut cleanly off with a sharp blade.

Returning the former juicer hopped off his horse slapping it gently on the rear. Thank you. Something dully clanked slightly in his pack. He eased himself into a seat, “Right, so my adopted mother every Sunday for lunch would make this delicious lemon meringue pie that you would die for. The lemon so full of flavor that it would wake you from the darkest doldrums, and the meringue was like the fluffiest marshmallow. Oh the lemon curd would make your lips picker in delight. Say if we get to New Del Rio and find a kitchen halfway decent I’ll see if the local market has some eggs, sugar, and lemon. I found what I need for the gelatin in the wild.” He patted his pack slightly and leaned back into the seat for the rest of the ride.

New Del Rio a dusty friend oft forgotten by those who knew her best. Mr. Marvin raised his hand shielding his eyes from the rising sun. Despite the blinding light he could not help but notice a bit of thuggery down an ally. Just a couple of guys roughing up another guy. The sniper sauntered down the ally aiming to do his own beat down of the local thugs. He smiled as he rolled up on them, “Say, if I hit you really hard will you at least tell me the best place to stay?” The two thugs dropped the guy they had beat up. Twenty more thugs, mostly dog boys, poured into the ally growling at Mr. Marvin. Frak!

Mr. Marvin returned to the group, a few thousand credits lighter, a bloodied face, and a crooked limp. He had seen better days at the cruel hands of the federation of magic. He shook his head with some amount of grimacing pain. Spitting some blood he said, “I got no idea where we should stay, just not down that ally.”

Trek: A hardship the party overcame on their trip: the tragic death of a favored Extra, spoiled or lost supplies, a mechanical breakdown, abysmal weather, and so on.

Travelling along to New Del Rio was MOSTLY uneventful after the problems with the Ley Line Storm, but it was a LONG trip. Even though all of them were tired, they soldiered on and were making good time... until they came across the downed bridge. It was crossing a river whose banks were too steep even for their off-road transportation. Without even waiting to be told to do so, Klanker disembarked and tied a few loops of rope from the APC to himself.

Then he jumped into the river.

And sank straight into the muddy bottom. His Sonar, however, was able to show him where the bridge's supports were, and with pushing his hydraulic muscles to their max, he was able to straighten the supports and brace them enough for the APC to probably cross.

"Supports are upright and braced, but I don't know how long they will hold. I recommend back up a few yards and gun it across. The ropes I have tied will pull me out."

The APC almost flew across the bridge, with the supports creaking and almost buckling underneath. After they went more than a few yards on the other side, Klanker was launched out of the water as the muck on the bottom of the river gave way and he was dragged a couple yards before they could come to a complete stop.

Looking like some sort of swamp monster, Klanker got to his feet.

"I think I will be needing a clean up before I get back into the APC, Sarge."

Arriving in New Del Rio, Klanker knew that the first thing they needed to do if they were going to start operations in the area was to get a base of operations. Spending a couple hours stomping through the streets Klanker was getting discouraged. People seemed put off by his new big cybernetic body. They did not have anything that sounded good for his unit's needs.

Walking past a dark alley, Klanker saw an old human lady being accosted by a couple of Lormac. Not even bothering to try to be quiet, Klanker walked up behind them.

"Now you two walking pairs of boots better leave her alone, or I will have to show you why picking on a Human is a bad idea."

After seeing his shadow and then turning around and seeing the mountain of steel behind them, they jumped back from her and started backing away, clearly not liking the look of their odds against Klanker and his obvious armaments.

"Thank-you, sir. I don't know what I would have done if it wasn't for you. You don't sound like you are from around here. Now, can you please tell me how I can possibly pay you back."

"Now, I don't suppose you know of anywhere me and my friends can stay..."

New Del Rio
10th April 110 PA
11:30am

While yesterday had not been a total success, things had gone ok. @Klanker had managed to find a safe place to stay. It was a quaint little place owned a very nice old lady that just loved to throw a ball for @Runt and scratch him behind the ears. She constantly cooed what aa good boy he was.

Hopefully today would go better. CS intelligence states that the legionnaires were schedule to meet the contact at noon in the market. From the intel the CS had the contact was an old human male wearing a red sombrero and blue serape. CS intelligence thinks that the contact will help if approached correctly.

As the team arrived in the market it was utter chaos. People were packed tight in the space, surging from stall to stall haggling over the wares. The was going to be very difficult to get the contact and get clear of the market if any of the other teams were here. It was a good thing @Frida had scouted the market out yesterday.

Ok this is the first team vs team objective.
This is a Dramatic Task.
You need 12 tokens in 2 rounds.
If no teams gets 12 tokens the contact is taken by the vamps.
Each round will be 1 week.

Modifiers
  • Everyone is at -2 due to the number of civilians in the market.
  • Because of the scouting yesterday the team gets a +1
  • Total scene modifier is -1 after scouting. This is adjusted by your card below.
  • Because you pushed through and arrived in town several hours earlier than the other teams you get a bonus of +1 to your first round rolls only.

Cards
  • I will roll 1d56 for each of your cards. I do not reroll duplicates, instead there are 2 extra Joker positions.
  • 1, 2, 3, 4 are considered Jokers and will add +2 to your roll.
  • Cards divisible by 4 are considered Clubs for hindrances affected by Clubs and add a -2 complication to the task (excepting 4 which is a joker).

Outcome
  • The first team to 12 tokens wins. They get the critical intel and all team members get Conviction. Remember the contact is a retired legionnaire so the FOM and CS teams will have to include a write up of how they get the intel from the contact.
  • Any team with 8 or more tokens get partial intel. Include in your write up how you got the intel.
  • Any Crit Failure will cause a wound to an ally or a market goer.

The market is chaos. It reminds SSgt Grimes of the burbs. Some might find it overwhelming. Henry feels at home. Shopping and talking are cake compared to combat. Feeling a little more at ease the Ranger follows the Dyna Bot, both wearing ponchos and sombreros. It was the robots suggestion that had both looking like locals. Big floppy hats and colorful ponchos covering them the two negotiated the market making a few purchases and looking for the former Legion member.

Both Henry and DV8 spy the contact early on. They mingle and shop and keep an eye on the former legionnaire.

Henry haggles and shops like a pro. When it comes time to say hello to the legion fellow Henry does so expertly and discreetly.

He will Introduce himself as, Henry Grimes, former Legion Scout. DV8’s intel on the Legion comes in hand, and helps sell the fact that Henry is an ex legionnaire who is working for the legion to get info.

The SSGt and robot endear themselves to the contact and buy him lunch.

Using @Frida's intel and High Command's description of the oddly dressed Human male, Runt sets off to the market to find him. There aren't many beings more suited to the task of finding somebody. Dog boy eyesight might be no better than average, but Runt can hear and smell better than most. On top of that, he has an innate sense for the supernatural.

Runt stalks through the market doing his best to seem like just another browsing the wares. The entire time his

Finding a corner of the marketplace where he could stand with clear sight lines to cover most of the marketplace, Klanker gets his sensors sweeping for threats as well as the old human male wearing a red sombrero and blue serape. Occasionally reviewing earlier video when his attention was diverted for what at the time seemed a possible critical sight, Klanker was still able to keep scanning throughout the area. A few magical disguises were in place as well as a couple invisible skulkers, but they could not escape the detection of his many sensors.

His compatriots were even easier for him to follow as their biometrics and facial recognition details were loaded into his internal computer and were highlighted in his internal displays. He was the big guns. He had to keep them in sight whenever possible to protect them.

Post by Frida »

From atop one of the fire escapes that Frida had discovered during her earlier recce, Frida scanned the market using her infra-red binoculars. The intense heat from the southern continental area and the immense crowd in the area making it nearly impossible to see. It was likely even worse for the others on the ground who were looking for a proverbial needle in a haystack with only a job description and approximate time that the target would be there. They were going to need to rely on @Runt's magic sniffing senses if they were to have any chance at all of finding the target. Still with this many people around, the dog boy was going to need all of the help he could get.

Frida knew she needed to weed out the crowd somehow, deciding on a two pronged approach. First to clear the area as much as she could, and secondly to attract the attention of the mystic. For the latter she had borrowed a questionable pendant that Henry had obtained in the desert on their way here. The suspect way it had evaded mundane medical treatments led Frida to believe it had held some nefarious prowess of some kind... And the market was a good a place as any to test it out. The object was currently being melted down in in her synthesizer with hydrofluoric acid and an aerosol for phase two. But that was for the later part of her plan, for now she needed to do something a little more conventional to clear the area.

Climbing up the metal side stairs the rest of the way to the roof, Frida found what she was looking for. New Del Rio was a city of refugees, traitors and outcasts that sought to eke out safety from the wilderness and away from the protective arm of the Coalition States. As such, this was not a place that attracted paragons of science and industry, with archaic overhead power lines and stations forming the majority of the towns grid, to the places that even had electricity. Still, commerce made the world go round, and even those in charge liked the taxes that came from it. So it was that the market was one of the places given priority for grid access in the city. The majority of the shops needed electricity to function, cut that off and the customers will quickly lose interest. Or at least enough of them would disperse with plans to return later, making their job of finding their target much easier.

Reaching the rooftop, Frida had found what she was looking for, a fenced off power transformer that supplied electricity to at least a third of the market. While the others started searching, Frida set about cutting the fence wire and hooking her cybernetic interface to the maintenance port of the humming machines surrounded by faded warning placards. From there it was a simple matter of disabling the safety protocols,

Within minutes, the power transformer began to overheat and spark, with Frida barely making it back over the edge of the rooftop before it violently exploded. While she quickly descended from the fire escape, Frida was able to see that her plan had worked better than expected, with a large chunk of the market removed from its power. While the rest started to experience brown outs as the other buildings started to draw more from the remaining supply.

The effect wasn’t immediate, but once it became evident that the power wasn’t going to come back on within a few minutes, large swaths of the crowd started to disperse, leaving for other places for their precious time and money. They had to act quickly, as it wouldn’t take long for a maintenance crew to show up to activate the backup generators so that the flow of credits could continue.

Mr. Marvin was not wholly unfamiliar to the snatch and grab methods often employed by covert operations. Although he was usually a shoot first grab later operative. But he waited blending into the crowd best a psi stalker could and waited some more. His armor shifted slightly depending on the background. His head was barely perceptible. Once or twice he saw Grimes come within arms reach and each time refrained from helping him to a dirt nap. Marvin’s smile grew at the mere thought but sighed. There will be plenty of time to enact Lybocc’s orders…

New Del Rio
10th April 110 PA

As you grab the contact, there is a commotion and suddenly you notice several operatives closing in on you. With no time to plan you begin to act. You have to move quickly or lose the contact and that valuable intel.

You team is currently 2 cards ahead of the other team. You can take any of the normal chase actions. Everyone is on foot, the market is too crowded for vehicles. The scene modifier is also -2 to all actions because of the crowd. Anyone on overwatch or flying does not suffer the -2 as long as they do not try to move into the crowd. You can only move the contact as a team so the team gets one movement roll. I will deal action cards but they are to determine complications and edges only, they do not affect posting order so do not wait. Anyone trying to run or flee is also at -2 from running. Each member will need to flee if they want to escape. Anyone that fails is potential captured.

Runt 1d56: [20] = 20 CLUBS <— new card from Henry. A 4 = Joker!
Frida 1d56: [54] = 54
Henry 1d56: [13] = 13
Checkers 1d56: [27] = 27

Seeing Runt is about to have a complication with several civilians in his path Henry calls out in Spanish to the group warning them of the evil dragon coming from above. The SSgt warns the group to get down and get out of the street before the monster hurts them. They quickly scatter and are no longer in the way of Runt.

Henry reaches out and takes the hand of a young lady and guides her off the street too. Leaving a red rose in her tan hand the SSgt runs down the street with the rest of the CS soldiers.

[New Card Given to Runt (Joker!) giving Runt a +2 to all his rolls, plus the additional +2 below to his Athletics roll]

Henry yells at the Dyna Bot, ”Run! Shoot something! Preferably that dragon!”

The Dyna Bot fires several well placed shots at the pursuers and a fruit stand knocking it into the path of those chasing the CS.

Henry looks over his shoulder as he runs and winks at the woman with the rose then glances at all the creeps chasing them.

SSgt Henry Grims Almost trips and falls. With luck he keeps his balance and keys up his radio:

“All right you guys we got this! Stay tight. Stay together. Keep this contact guy in your sights. We beat the lousy mages here, and we’re all used to running, so pound pavement and let’s go! If you get sights on any of the freaks chasing us open fire but let’s try to not kill any civilians. Unlike these creepy mages we’re the good guys!”

Results (5 bennies burnt in the making of this post):

Henry Athletics (Change position) 5
Henry Battle (Inspire) 14 … giving everyone a +2 to their Athletics rolls!

DV8 Athletics (Change position) 9
DV8 Shooting 12

All the messy old rolls and text

Tactician
A Tactician is dealt an extra Action Card each round of combat or a chase — kept separate from his own cards. At the start of the round, he may discard it or give it to anyone. Attempting to get Runt a non Club card.

Per GM, Roll 1d56. 1 to 4 is joker and anything divisible by 4 is a club.
1d56: [4] = 4
@Runt you have a new card. It’s a 4, which is a Joker.

DV Rolls
DV8 Running (Pace 8, Fleet Footed, Steady Hands) Roll Here——Athletics
DV8 Shooting Roll Here
1 bennie spent
1d8!-2: [8!, 3]-2 = 9 1d8!-2: [4]-2 = 2 1d8!-2: [8!, 6]-2 = 12

Shooting, to put obstacles in the foe’s path.

Athletics = 9 but -2 from Henry so a 7
Shooting = 12

Henry looks over his shoulder as he runs and winks at the woman with the rose then glances at all the creeps chasing them.
Henry Rolls
Henry Running Roll (Pace 8, Fleet Footed Edge) Here
1d8!-2: [6]-2 = 4
Wild Die Here 1d6!-2: [2]-2 = 0
Henry Battle Roll to Inspire all CS with hopefully a +2 to rolls.
Battle (d8+2 -4): 1d8!-2: [5]-2 = 3
WD: 1d8!-2: [5]-2 = 3 …. Wrong roll, here go: 1d6!-2: [2]-2 = 0
1 bennie
1d8!-2: [3]-2 = 1 1d6!-2: [3]-2 = 1

Running = 4
Goofed. Running not used in chase. So here is my Athletics roll 1d6-4
1d6!!-4: [4]-4 = 0
1d6!!-4: [4]-4 = 0

Battle = wasted a bennie and crit failed.

Inspire
Exceptional leaders inspire those around them to great feats of valor and determination. Once per turn, the hero may roll his Battle skill to Support one type of Trait roll, and apply it to all allied Extras in Command Range. A leader could Support all Shooting attacks in range, for example, or all Spirit rolls to recover from being Shaken. In this case Inspire Running Trait. Or Athletics?
SSgt Henry Grims belts out an old CS boot camp cadence as the team runs madly down the street with the contact. Hopeful to motivate the rest into moving faster! Unfortunately his voice cracks and he goes into a coughing fit.

“Up in the morning with the Chi…

*hak hak cough* go!“

No fun cadence. Just bad memories of boot camp.
Henry has a hard time running as he coughs.

Results from my post:
  • Henry Athletics = Failure. Stuck on existing Card.
  • Dv8 Athletics = Success = Move a Card.
  • Henry got Runt a new/better card — Runt gets a +2 to all his rolls from the Joker card
  • DV8 Shooting, to put obstacles in the foe’s path. rolled a success with 2 raises!
  • All the Coalition players are at an additional -2 to Athletics rolls — see below

NOTES ABOUT THE CHASE

Everyone is -2 unless on roofs or flying. If you are on street with contact you are in the crowd.
Everyone is at an additional -2 to Athletics because of Henry.

You don’t roll running in a chase.

Maneuver rolls are Atheltics in a foot chase. Period. Maneuver rolls are required to move forward along the Chase track. All other actions can be taken normally. But as you are running those other actions are at -2 (-2 scene) for a -4 total.

So Athletics -4
If you do anything else -4

Runt does get a +2 to any rolls from Joker

Results of your Athletics Roll:
Success = Move a Card. Raise = Move Two Cards. Failure. Stuck on existing Card.
Final rolls

Contact, non descript but our team has him/her or it. Mr. Marvin peered out of his shadowy hidey hole. His normal friendly smile disapeared as he realized another group was also after the contact. It was not his first rodeo. He moved with the his CS group and found a nice little perch. He grinned looking down the length of his Viggo custom made rifle trying his best to ignore Grime’s nonsensical prattle. “No legs, no chase.” He opened fire at the nearest person chasing his team looking to take out the persons legs (if it happens to be a flyer, then their mode of transport). Hopefully that would be enough so,we can all get out of here. After the shot, his eyes darted arround looking for the best egress to stay ahead of the pursuers and once he finds it he moves!

Checkers moves fluidly, his incredible size belying just how fast he really is. It takes a second for anyone to realize he's even moving, and by then he's already gone. His ion assault rifle is just there at his shoulder; he holds it like an extension of himself and it's hard to imagine it ever having been anywhere but at his shoulder.

He gently squeezes off shot after shot after shot at the squad's pursuers, hopefully sending them into disarray.

All hell had broken loose the moment @Henry had acquired the target, with the remainder of the crowd scattering in all directions the moment two separate teams of dubious looking figures started converging on their position. It didn’t take an oracle to determine that these were the other two groups that they had been briefed about. In the end, it didn’t matter who they were as they were at risk of losing the contact.

The Coalition was well trained and able to back up their prowess with access to expensive technology that other regions could only dream of. It was what they called their great equalizer, when faced against opponents with access to world shattering magic and demonic powers. Unfortunately they were at a huge disadvantage given their equipment load out (or lack thereof), so they needed to get out fast.

Frida’s HUD scanned the others, who had already taken to peppering the area with covering fire, making the crowd scatter away from them or even inspiring them to action as they all darted forward as one. Their actions were cohesive but rapid flapping of wings and the zapping sounds of teleportation powers coming from behind them told the Lieutenant that there would be no escaping the area despite their best efforts unless they were to take drastic measures.

Popping a tranquilizer into her mouth, Frida visibly calmed as her pupils dilated and she was able to focus on what was going on around her without her rapidly beating heart distracting her. The organ slowing down to an oozing crawl as she set about methodically doing what she could to even the odds. Yes, the answer seemed clear to her now... She wasn’t certain why she had hesitated before with injecting everyone with experimental drugs.

Reaching behind her back, Frida retrieved her PDIL and fired up the synthesizer. The device spinning rapidly as it set about mixing the correct assortment of chemicals into miniature vials for rapid deployment. The

had marked as ready, the computer IDing each of her comrades in turn as she pilled the trigger. Quick shunking sounds came from the device as the steel tipped pods flew through the air, slapping against the skin of her allies as the glowing red liquid injected itself into their bloodstreams.

Sliding forward towards @Klanker she placed the device directly against the base of his neck, climbing a step up his back while grabbing on to his arm so she could administer the drug directly into the remanents of his brain, stuffing the injector just under the metallic plate covering what was once his skull. Cyborgs were always difficult, but not impossible... There existed small traces of organic material left in them at least.

The effect was immediate, causing an intense surge of neurostimulants to increase brain and muscle activity. To an outsider, each person would seem to suddenly seem to have gone berserk, moving faster beyond their own limits as their figures surged into motion, seeming to react to their environment even as their legs pushed them forward with powerful intensity. To those affected, time would seem to slow down to a crawl, possibly seeming to cause small confusion as the crowd sluggishly moved away from them, where even projectiles seemed to fly from their weapons with visible motion that had not been seen before... Everything seemed so... slow and easy. They had plenty of time to think between each action they took.

With a final twist of the launcher, Frida injected her own shoulder with the last remaining shot and set about

Due Frida, can do 2 actions with no MAP.
Change Position +2 Assist due Henry
  • Action 1: Change Position (Action) (-2 due Crowd Penalty, +2 due Henry, +2 due Action, MAP cancelled due Frida.)
    • Athletics: 1d4!!+2!!: [1]+2 = 3
      Wild: 1d6!!+2!!: [4]+2 = 6
      Result: 6 - Success.
Action 2: Shooting Railguns at buildings to slow down pursuit. Klanker is Ruthless. He does not care about civilian casualties.
    • -2 Running Penalty cancelled due Ranged Data System, +2 due Targeting Eye, MAP cancelled due Frida and Two Gun Kid
      • Shooting: 1d12!!+2!!: [1]+2 = 3
        Wild: 1d6!!+2!!: [3]+2 = 5
        Result: 5 - Success.
Action 3: Shooting Railguns at buildings to slow down pursuit. Klanker is Ruthless. He does not care about civilian casualties.
    • -2 Running Penalty cancelled due Ranged Data System, +2 due Targeting Eye, MAP cancelled due Frida and Two Gun Kid
      • Shooting: 1d12!!+2!!: [5]+2 = 7
        Wild: 1d6!!+2!!: [7!!]+2 = 9
Result: 9 - Success with Raise.

Woah, what a Rush!!! This must be how a Juicer sees the world!

Feeling the rush from Frida's chemical concoction, Klanker sees the world move in slow motion. He has plenty of time to follow his feet's motion ands well as everyone else's as he keeps up with the rest of his team. He is feeling so confident in his ability to move his new body that he turns around, running backwards, and starts shooting down some of the nearby buildings to create rubble to slow down their pursuit with both of his Railguns.

New Del Rio
10th April 110 PA

OK sorry guys I do not see a viable way to make the chase scene work and keep everyone "happy". We will save chases for players vs mobs and not player vs player.

The pursuit was immediate and as you scrambled to get clear the contact began rushing to tell you all he could.
Deep in the vampire kingdoms is the river Tonto. Hundred of years ago it big bend to the northeast then looped back in towards itself and continued southeast. Now the river has changed course and just flows straight. The jungle has reclaimed the river so it will be hard to find it but look for what was there before.
What I have heard is that near that old river bed they have discovered an ancient temple. They say it is a temple to the old Mayan or maybe Aztec sun god. There are even rumors of power magic in the temple.
I am glad that the legion sent someone to reclaim the magic before the CS or someone else finds it.
Somewhere behind you a dragon roared and then Klanker opened with his rail guns. The market was in chaos. As @Henry looked over to ask the contact another question the contact was gone. Somehow he had vanished into thin air.

When Henry looked back up he had turned down a very dark alley and there were several shapes detaching themselves from the walls. Looks like the vamps had come to play too.

The chase is over. This is a Dangerous Quick Encounter to get clear of the city.
You are all spread out form the chase so you will need to take one of the following actions:
  1. Roll notice at -4 (due to chaos and crowd) to find the rest of the team and regroup. Once regrouped one of the team will have to make the survival roll at -2 to get clear of the city.
  2. Roll Survival at -2 (unfamiliar with the city layout) to get clear of the city. Flyers ignore the -2 because they can see over the city.
  3. Roll stealth at -2 (actively looking for you) to go to ground and hide till the chaos ends and try and sneak out later.

You can roll to support the rolls above but this will incur a MAP. The MAP will apply to all rolls you make this turn.
  1. Roll battle to help regroup the team.
  2. Roll an attack to slow down the vampires and their thralls.

Keep in mind:
  • Frida has Quickness on everyone to help negate MAP
  • Henry rolled Battle and adds a +2 to everyone’s Notice rolls.

Henry Notice d10 +2 ——-> 3 Fail
DV8 Shooting d8 ——> 3 Fail
Henry Battle d8 +2 ——> 8 Success & Raise
Henry Survival d8+2 ——> 5 Success

No MAP for support since we all have Quickness on us…

Roll Survival at -2 (unfamiliar with the city layout) to get clear of the city. Flyers ignore the -2 because they can see over the city.
So -2 and +2 from skill
1d6!!: [5] = 5 1d8!!: [5] = 5

To get clear if City got a 5 (Successful). I know the way out!

Notice to find the rest of party. 1d6!!: [5] = 5 , 1d10!!: [5] = 5

Battle to help others find the party with their Notice. —> 1d8: [6] = 6 , 1d6!!: [4] = 4

DV8 shooting at Vamps roll d8 — 1d8!!: [3] = 3

Narrative

The Dyna Bot immediately opens fire on the Vampires with the energy rifle it’s carrying. If any of the shots had managed to strike a vampire it would have been apparent that energy rifles don’t work on vamps. However, every shot misses causing damage to the surrounding buildings instead.

Henry for his part, is momentarily distracted by thoughts of his son. Wondering if he’d see the lad again. He has lost track of where everyone is exactly, and damn if he knew where the contact got off to, but the Staff Sergeant activates his radio and keys in a locator code. The closer everyone gets to each other the louder the beeping gets. That should help everyone find each other.

Once everyone is gathered Henry feels confident on the way out of town. One things he’s mastered over time is getting away. Normally that meant fleeing a female officer quarters when their husbands came home early but the basic principle applied here. SSgt Grimes had a escape route planned before they even made contact with the contact.

It paid to be ready to flee. Flee today and love again to… well in this case, live and stay alive.

Henry frowned at DV8’s attempts to shoot … Vampires!

Henry Grimes ran faster and continued to talk to the rest of the team and coordinate their efforts to gather up and get out of town.

  • DV8 shoots at Vampires and misses.
  • Henry knows the way out of town and can lead everyone out.
  • Henry adds a +2 to everyone’s Notice roll to regroup even though he doesn’t know everyone’s locations.

One thing Staff Sergeant Henry Grimes could do with his radio was pick up CS transponders. As he ran like hell down the alley way he noticed a new CS beep (code) pop into proximity.

He keyed up his mic to directly transmit to the new, hopefully real and truly a CS operative, and bark out orders to the person using the CS radio.

“Attention user 55R1! @Calvin_Mason I am Staff Sergeant Grimes of the First Force Recon! My team is attempting to evade a band of blood sucking mother truckers and get out of this here crazy town called New Del Rio. I don’t know what your orders are but we could use the assistance if you can. I see you’re close. Can you give us a hand brother?”

Henry loops the user 55R1 into the proximity locator broadcast.

Mr Marvin commed Frida feeling more spry than usual, almost as much as when he was a juicer, “Wow! You got some good drugs, not as tastey as an orange marmalade meranguine pie but damn Frida, brings me back to the juicer days.” The tenor of his voice hit a sad note at the mention of his days of former glory. He had intentionally tried to put just the right amount of exuberance into his voice but the time spent as a juicer had been one of his best fleeting moments. Not something so easily forgotten. For much of that period of his life he had been undercover with the Tomorrow Legion. He was a specialist for them doing odd altruistic jobs in the badlands and whatnot. He even was tasked by them for an undercover operation within the slave pens of Atlantis…
Tomorrow Legion, Operation Quiet Word
Mr. Marvin kept his cloak down over his bald head. Too many demons in Atlantis would love to make a quick snack out of the psi-stalker. The arena had proved most interesting. Especially that Rulianin. Perhaps we will be able to free the hero. Mr. Marvin smirked, it was interesting the lens of good that the Tomorrow Legion employed. He turned on his juicer rig letting the juice flow, it was his turn in the arena. After all it is our only chance to pass on information to our contact. Coake had told Mr. Marvin it had to be done at any cost. Mr. Marvin’s muscles tensed and the world slowed down, he roared and lunged forward into the bright lights of the Arena.
Contact lost, and Market place an invariable stampede. One chance remains…. The mission matters. Time to reach out to a so called hero.

Mr. Marvin commed the team his ISS special training uncharacteristically asserting its self in the fragmented dire situation, ”Meet at location Charlie. I’ll cover you. Runt, Klanker, and Checkers make sure Grimes and Frida get out.” Hopefully they’ll remember Charlie was a small grove of trees and junked aged old cars 2 miles outside of town. Tense words spoken he fired a few spirit blasts from his magical bow covering Frida and Grimes, then found a shadowy alley, leading to a dirty sewer and went off grid. His mission was clear and nothing was going to stop him.

Stealth d10-2 scene,+2 gear: 1d10!!: [6] = 6 1d6!!: [1] = 1

It was a struggle crawling through the sewer back the way the CS team had come. Tight quarters, foul smelling, but the former Juicer had been in worse muck. “The slave pens were worse than this.” He grinned trying to keep his head above the floating poop and pee smelling thick sludge. But a laugh escaped his lips. “Keep it together, Marvin. Almost there.” While most of what was chasing the CS was on the kill list, there were regulations for special allowances if a threat was deemed great enough. Ending vampires is dire enough.

Mr marvin popped the grate, crawled out of the muck. Maybe he looked like one of the monsters he was about to ask for help, but he knew the stakes. Taking his vibroblade he cut into a brick wall a message. By his calculations the @Hero would cross it in less than 20 seconds. Message scrawled, Mr. Marvin, whistled for a horse, traded that horse for a shower and meal from a pair of Gandalfs. Then once things calmed down he cut the hands off the pair of wizards but let them keep their lives and snuck out of the city to hopefully met up with team CS at point Charlie.
Wall scrawl for Hero
Pinapple, zero 1 echo 2. A better world for all- Mr. Marvin.
Player note: my thinking was it was legion code for 1 mile south 2 miles west, a possible place to meet.

They had evaded capture by their pursuers, or at least she had... For now. Frida’s felt nauseous as she darted around around the side of a brick inlaid building, still holding the PDIL in her hands as she took a moment to breathe. Something she had been forgetting to do since the chase, as the mixture of tranquilizer and cerebral adrenaline had started to do strange things to her, causing her vision to blur as she darted forward with narrow minded focus. She knew that she was clearly experiencing auditory hallucinations as well, as she could still hear Mr. Marvin discussing detailed recounts of his favourite pies next to her the moment before they had gotten separated.

The panicked crowd had made things worse, not only causing it to be difficult to tell friend, foe and bystander apart but making it nearly impossible to see the escape route they had scouted out prior to their arrival. I’m not a battle hardened soldier, I’m a lab rat. Yet I’m expected to be capable of leading these people because I went to medical school. Her thoughts ran through her head as as she tried to restore her vision to normal through practised breathing, but to no avail.

At that moment her thoughts were broken as she heard the sudden transponder beeping over their encrypted channel, the Staff Sergeant coming through once again where she had not. She could follow the proximity marker, but making her way through the crowd while she could barely see seemed impossible. The solution was the same as it was in many cases... More drugs. She whispered quietly as she grabbed a syringe from her PDIL, processing the fluid to the amounts that would increase per perception further before

Her throat tightened around itself as her senses sharpened further, clearing up the blur that had fallen over her vision as three potent chemicals now fought for control over her body. Her heart was slowed, while her brain worked at an accelerated rate, vision and hearing sharpening as she opened the face of her helmet, radioing Henry and the others that she had received the signal to meet at the rendezvous point and that she was en route.

At least that her been her intention, the moment she had opened the channel and opened her mouth to speak, her stomach had violently ejected its contents as it unleashed the remains of the MRE she had consumed earlier. Blaaargguuurg!. She keeled over forwards, trying to quickly correct herself, only to fail and have the disgusting liquidy sound repeat itself before she could disable the transmission. Hopefully during the confusion the others would mistake the sounds for simple interference or static...

Wiping her mouth with the sleeve of her EBA, she darted forward as her heightened senses

She was barely conscious of her own actions at this point as she moved on instinctual auto pilot to sight out each of the other members who had not taken to running to ground, taking note of their positions. The priority was to get everyone together, where they would then have the advantage as they catered to their biggest strength, the ability to work together as a cohesive unit. Only in doing so would they have a chance against the encroaching vampires that had decided to join the fray.

She wanted to call out to them again, but feared a repeat of her earlier transmission. Henry’s transponder would have to suffice... Why did everything taste of vomit right now anyway?

Flipping a few switches he yelled across the radio as he was running: “Breaker 66 Romeo Nine I am picking up your transponder. If you copy we could use some help. I’m keying you into our com-net.”

Racing from one end of the Market to the other, he kills the thrusters and glides in. Within twenty feet of his target, he flips the safety off and fires off one of his Plasma Mini Missiles.

Using the facial scans in his internal computers with his Optics Packager, Klanker is easily able to mentally tag and follow the locations of his team mates to meet up with them. Aiming at the vampires and their Thralls, Klanker lets loose with his Railgun and mows down the Thralls, though it ends up almost useless against the Vampires. Pushing his way physically through what is left of the crowds, Klanker strolls through the city towards his teammates.

New Del Rio
10th April 110 PA
14:00hrs

The team had been trying to regroup and extract for hours. The mission was in jeopardy. Even with the newly found assets there were still missing members. As @Frida was franticly trying to formulate a new plan to locate and extract the others. She had regrouped with @Henry but he was battered and looked fatigued. Scanning him closely she could tell he was not bite but the thralls must have had a time chasing him. Looked like he fell in some disgusting garage at one point. She was in the middle of asking if he had any good ideas when their comms went dead for a second and everyone received an incoming burst transmission.

Secure Transmission on Emergency Frequency
Status report now.
My assets inform me you botched the market contact and may have blown operational cover. This is supposed to be a covert operation and if First Force Recon can not maintain that cover, I will send a more qualified team. Remember if this mission is too hard I can find you all positions at the Gate.
I have sent you some additional personnel to help. Extract your missing men and get back on target now.

As the unit officer I hold you accountable for your units failures. This mission can not be compromised. If anyone is compromising it then they need to be removed.

My assets report that Grimes is still alive. I assume you have a reason for letting him live. If you have gone soft then maybe it is time for a new operative to handle both problems. If he is mission critical then allow him to finish the mission. You are cleared Epsilon 3 7 Sigma to remove in obstacle and I mean any obstacle.

While the transmission never stated his name, anyone that had ever met him would never forget the voice of that Colonel. @Frida immediately prepared a transmission with the teams status.
@Frida - Combat ready. Formulating a plan to extract the others.
@Henry - Battered but combat ready. With Frida and working on plan. 1 fatigue
@Marvin - Status unknown and location unknown. Last seen fleeing down an alleyway and headed for rally point charlie. 1 fatigue
@Calvin_Mason - Status unknown and location unknown. 1 wound
while he waited to see who the contact was a large dirty d-bee thrall grabbed him and slammed him against the wall several times. Calvin managed to struggle free but he was sure he heard a loud snap and several of his ribs hurt.

@Townsend D. Jackson - Combat ready. Flying overwatch trying to locate the rest of the team.
@Klanker - Combat ready. Pulling security at the end of the alley while Frida and Henry figure out a plan.
@Checkers - Battered but combat ready. Pulling security at the other end of the alley. 1 fatigue
@Runt - Missing in action. Status and location unknown. His comms are dead and no one has seen him.

Narratively explain how you regroup the team and then get clear of the city. No rolls this time. You won the first team vs. team so if @Frida or @Henry can give a rallying morale raising pep talk then everyone will get conviction.

Frida gritted her teeth at this, their adversaries were good but she had no idea that they had been *this* well prepared. It was likely one of those from the Federation who had used their techno-magical devices to hack their channel. Either that or a spy from the Legion had managed to obtain their access codes before departure.

Placing a hand on Henry’s shoulder, she shakes her head to give him the signal to let her handle this. They were over 1000 miles away from Chi-Town and the outbreak in the market of New Del Rio had taken place only moments ago. Any sort of transmission crossing the continent to reach the Colonel would have taken days at best for turnaround time as it was sent across relay towers. That wasn’t even counting the encrypted message needing to be hand carried across Pecos territory before it could even reach the nearest relay point in an area under their control.

Replying to the transmission, she broadcasted to her entire group while sending the message to the one who had demanded a status update:
Unknown speaker, you have the wrong channel. This is a private frequency for Jade Eagle Mercenary Company based out of Los Alamo. I say again you are on an encrypted private channel. Jade Eagle, cease all communications immediately and burn encryption codes, this channel has been compromised. New codes will be generated and given out on rendezvous.

Turning to Henry, Frida opened the helmet of her EBA and spoke to him with the comms disabled, hitting the button that would erase their existing code loadout. “This message was extremely generic and designed to catch us off guard. Considering the immediacy of the transmission along with the inaccuracies and the specifics not mentioned, we need to assume that this was a canned recording prepared in advance for this moment. So far we haven’t blown our cover as mercenaries and we retrieved the intel from the contact before he was taken. Nothing about this seems legitimate in the slightest. Someone very close by is impersonating the Colonel, which means we can't trust any of the codes we've been given before departure.

Frida sighed and rubbed her visible eye in frustration. ”We’re going to need to go completely dark from here and cut off any contact with HQ until the mission is completed. I’ll generate new encryption codes for the others once we’ve gathered, but from now on we go by our presumed personas during short range communications as a precaution. Make sure to discuss the details with your men. For now stick with the plan, priority is to gather and get our bearings.”

This wasn’t good, not at all. With Runt missing and their backup not having made visual things were going to be difficult...

Is Frida really gritting her teeth? Mr. Marvin nudged the scope of his sniper rifle a hair getting a bead on Grimes. Llyboc’s transmission crystalized what was important. Only about 1000 feet from the couple up a tall tree he breathed and nudged the rifle one more hair and fired. Having hit the vampire following Grimes he slid down the tree and packed up his gear following the two.

Once a bit closer he called to the pair, ”Frida, Grimes… Llyboc’s pissed. Head to rally point Charlie?” Oh and he wants you dead Grimes. The psi stalker looked a bit tired, but otherwise no worse for wear. He smiled at Grime’s like a predator looking at prey, “It might also be good to not blurt out CS call signs. First Force Recon might be too on the nose… Sir.” After a beat, Mr. Marvin grinned wide once more and chuckled, “Yeah lets head to rally point Charlie, I saw someone I knew back in the marketplace. I think we might have cause to work together.”

New Del Rio
10th April 110 PA

By the time the CS team cleared the town and ditched any pursuit it was late. As they gathered at rally point Charlie the sun was low in the sky. Whatever plans they had they would have to move quick because with that many vamps in town no one wanted to be caught out in the open. The team was in chaos and shaken. They had gotten the intel but then all hell had broken loose. Runt was MIA, one of the new operatives they had been sent had gone radio silent without ever making visual contact, and either command knew and was pissed or they had been hacked.

Everyone was looking @Henry. Some for answers and some for other reasons. If they wanted to succeed with the mission then they need to sort out the intel and move quickly before the mission was compromised.

In the distance they could see @Marvin meeting with @Hero.

What are you doing?
Someone will need to roll survival to find a place to camp for the night since you fled town.
Do you set a watch?
I need anyone standing watch to roll notice.

Mr. Marvin crawled out from beneath a shrub. His helmet was off and his bow and rifle were both stowed on his his back. His side arm was holstered as well. His armor shimmered going from a camo color to black as night. Some kind of stealth armor. Noticeably he no longer had a juicer rig. None of his gear was coalition and in fact his bow was a magical spirit bow.

He smiled wide, “Damn Hero, last time I saw you was back in Atlantis.” He chuckled and kept it

I assume the legion is out here just like us: to recover or use an artifact capable of destroying vampires.” He paused scrunching up his face at the mention of vampires. His bald psi stalker’s head was scratched with several fresh claw marks.

He jerked his head yonder, “We got some actionable intel, and we are leaving in about an hour. If you want to partner up show up.”

He looked Hero dead in the eye, “Somethings transcend creed, or code. Putting an end to vampires has to be one of them.”

Hero considers this. "I'm not saying no, outright, mind you. Your appeal to our common cause does have merit. But honestly, if we are talking about a magical or alien weapon, would your new masters even be willing to use it against the bloodsuckers? Or would they just take it and drop it into some deep dark hole, like they've done with so much else? I doubt my companions will be willing to trust your associates on this score. Still, I will carry your offer to them, and present it as fairly as I can."

He lets Mr. Marvin reply, before heading off to rejoin his companions, making sure as best he can that he is not followed back to their camp; in fact, about halfway there, he radios ahead and asks for an airlift from Watcher.

For those who they had managed to gather, Frida hurries with assigning new encryption codes to using the commpad on her EBA, inputting the randomized seed to allow her team to get around the security breach that had occurred. They would be effectively cut off from from the CS until their return, but the chances of them needing to make contact this far south was unlikely to begin with... Still, going completely dark like this came with its own risks and sense of discomfort.

The first of which mustering everyone, including their newcomers. Frida had to physically wave down the power armor pilot that had been circling overhead looking for them. Fortunately he seemed capable enough in using his survival skills to find a camping site outside of the town based on its suitability. Still, that didn’t bode extremely well for them as the enemy might have drawn the same reasonable conclusion as well.

“Our codes have been compromised.” The short blonde haired woman with the cybernetic eye explained to @Jackson. “It came at a poor time, I am sending new ones to you now.” Her words had been direct in fulfilling the immediate need, seeming to waste no time at all on introductions. Seeming somewhat distracted as she kept looking over her shoulder at @Marvin and @Hero as they quietly discussed something out of hearing range.

For the second time in recently memory Frida

The officer in charge had been overdoing it lately with the experimental drugs, despite the fact that it had managed to get them out of the tight situation. Still... The side effects were decidedly unpleasant as she more than once had to leave to vomit behind a bush.

When Mr. Marvin had returned, rather than ask him about his clandestine meeting, she set to work on him with instructions. “We need to find the one Henry mentioned that had arrived as our backup. Identified as @Calvin_Mason. Runt is more than capable of finding us on his own, but I have no data on this newcomer. Do you have anything in your bag of tricks for locating someone who is actively trying to remain hidden?”

Questions about the psi-stalkers odd friend would have to wait, they had to make sure everyone was safe first.

It was late. They needed a place to camp that provided cover and concealment.

Scouting the region from the ground Staff Sergeant Grimes assisted the power armor pilot until a suitable spot was located.

Seeing the Lieutenant pass out new com-codes Henry spoke quietly with the Dyna Bot DV8. The two disappeared into the growing darkness.

Fifteen minutes later DV8 returned to stand guard as the combat bot didn’t need sleep and had an impressive detection system built in.

Another ten minutes passed and SSgt Grimes stomped his way into camp covered in fresh red blood carrying a helmet that dripped blood. Looking at Mr. Marvin long and hard Henry turned hard eyes from the Psi Stalker to Frida.

“Runt is definitely MIA gawd damn it. He’ll have to fend for himself as we can’t jeopardize the mission to find him. Hopefully he shows up tonight. As far as one Calvin Mason…”

Henry tossed the helmet to the ground. As it rolled towards the two it seeped red, a decapitated head fell out of the helmet as the helmet came to rest at Frida’s feet and the head at Marvin’s feet.

“… he was not who he said he was. End of story. We lost Runt and picked up fly boy.”

Taking a deep breath the SSgt shouts out orders to the rest of the CS Force Recon team.

This is the first time Mr. Marvin or Frida have seen anger in Henry’s eyes.

Watch. Dinner. Ammo counts. Sit-Reps. There was military things to do and by the gods they’d be done professionally and proficiently!

Calvin PM’d me a while back to say he couldn’t play.

Mr. Marvin smiled and raised an eye brow as Hero departed. Not exactly the response I was looking for. He called after the legionaire, “Whatever it takes to end the vampires and their menace. We leave in an hour.” He and the CS team had no outward appearance of being CS but the former juicer and legionnaire wondered given Hero’s comments if Hero somehow knew they were from the Coalition. Perhaps Grimes had sold them out.

Returning back to Frida and Grimes he nodded to them. At first Mr. Marvin seemed puzzled that Grimes was there, but he recovered quickly. Smiling at Grimes like a starving man looking at a Christmas ham he said gently, “You both should know, given our current mission and will lie ahead of us, I reached out to a contact. We maybe able to find some allies we can use to get to our objective. I gave them one hour to show.” His eyes darted briefly to the severed head near Grime’s feet. No doubt Llyboc’s back up plan. A shame the assassin did not kill Grimes. Calvin was one of Llyboc’s best…

Charming his way back into the conversation he started going on about some other tastey pie flavors, ”Now Frida, one time I had a chance to stop in the Golden Apple in Merctown. They simply had the best Apple pie I had ever had.” The psi stalker’s tummy rumbled. It was almost feeding time.

Pie Story for a bennie…

Agent Calvan Mason moved quietly across the darkening desert landscape. The only real sound was the soft beep of the transponder locater of the radio. He had been assigned to track down and join, then spy on the First Force Recon team. As he understood it, Col. Lyboc was concerned that the team was compromised. Their Lieutenant had next to no combat experience and as if that wasn’t bad enough, the team Staff Sergeant was not who he was supposed to be. It had come to light that the wrong Henry Grimes was assigned to the team. The Special Forces Grimes had mistakenly been assigned to the Chi Town Royal Gardens as a gardener. It had pushed the man over the edge. A dedicated, awarded, incredible Special Forces Staff Sergeant told to mow the lawns and plant flowers. No wonder the man had gone postal and burnt half the garden and killed several enlisted gardeners. What a waste. He had been killed when ISS had tried stopping him. A waste.

And now some glorified gardener puke named Henry Grimes was pretending to be more than he was. Grimes here in Mexico should be dead, he had no combat experience according to his dossier and the man was likely mucking everything up. Probably hiding from fights and doing nothing for team moral. Lyboc had been clear on this: Kill Henry Grimes and take over as second, keep the Lieutenant in line and make damned sure the CS team succeeded in their mission.

”Easy as pie…” Mason muttered and grinned. Kill a worthless gardener and push around the officer. He snickered and glanced back at the transponder. He was close now. The whole team was assembled in a clearing ahead, including the RPA Pilot that had been sent to help.

The cold metal that touched the back of his head stopped the spy in his tracks. Panic welled in his chest and mind, someone or something had snuck up on him and had a gun to his head.

”What’s easy as pie? Gosh, speaking of pie, there was this one pie shop in the burbs that I loved. Keep your hands empty and to your sides. Just drop the transponder.”

Mason did as he was told, he needed to buy time, dropping the radio he slowly turned about and kept his hands up.

Facing the man with a blaster to his forehead, Mason seethed then hissed: ”You!”

A smile spread across Henry Grimes face and he softly laughed, ”Yes, me. I thought I recognized your voice on the radio. Howzit go’n bro.”

Mason spit, ”You aren’t my bro! What are you doing here Zero One Niner?!”

Taking a step back from Mason, Henry kept the pistol trained at the man’s head.

”Me? Well I’m tagging along with the First Recon as Henry Grimes…”

”What!” Mason interrupted.

”I see that upset you…”

Mason’s eyes grew larger in amazement.

”I…I was sent to kill you, not you, to kill Henry Grimes. I…”

Henry smiled. ”Well you see Mason; I am Grimes now. How unfortunate for you that your easy assassination has turned into your death. No. Shut up. I do not care to listen. I know you work for Colonel Lyboc as one of his top henchmen spy’s. I report straight to Joseph Prosek. That’s right buddy. So, I don’t care about what you have to say. I have things where I want them… easy as pie as you say. Seriously, now I want pie. Ugh, anyway, I can’t have you mucking things up so…”

Henry Grimes pulled the trigger on the blaster, point blank - it vaporized Mason’s head and cut off whatever the now dead man was about to say.

Looking down at the dead spy Staff Sergeant Henry Grimes set a thermite grenade down on the man – it would burn away all evidence that the man had been here.

He took a moment to watch the ash’s blow away then set that playboy lopsided grin back on his face that the others had come to know as Henry.

Making his way back to the camp and the rest of the CS he thought: I really do miss that pie shop.

You Can Tell a Lot About a Person Based on Where They Eat Their Pie
A Pie Story by Frida

Kneeling down next to the severed head dropped by @Henry, Frida likely grosses out a few of the other soldiers by reaching down and picking it up at the sides, carefully turning over to examine it and the severed stump while getting blood on the white padded gloves of her EBA. ”Human male, single shot to the frontal cranium at point blank range with a small arm device. Plasma round causing one quarter vaporization. Cervical spine separated post mortem with a harmonic edge over 60 centimeters in length.” It was one thing to kill another person in combat, but yet another to play with dead body parts like they were curiosities to be examined.

"I don't like pie." Came the abrupt change in tone from the Lieutenant as the topic was suddenly brought up again by the @odd psi-stalker corporal. She hadn't realized that she had been staring blankly ahead at him as she placed the severed head back to the ground and stood up, having watched him earlier having a conversation with the oddly shaped d-bee.

I don't know why it keeps coming back to this. Frida thought as her HUD once again pulled up an overlay of Marvin's dossier over her retina. Nearly the entire thing was redacted, her eye scanning across the words for anything of use.

"Golden apple in Merctown, known contacts in New Del Rio." Her voice rattled off with an almost robot precision and memory. "A former juicer, adopted parents in Sault Ste Marie, mother from Quebec, detailed knowledge of a specific pie shop in Lone Star." One could almost hear the sounds of a processor at work as she listed out the details, doing so in such a way that no person would reasonably do in polite conversation. Though if they hadn't figured it by now, it was surely evident that the officer in charge had certain issues with... speaking.

"Questionably legal ordinance which you possesses a high degree of skill in using. Headshots from a moving APC, targeting of the legs from pursuant enemies within a crowd, reconnaissance skill. This creates a travel profile that draws a line through the entirety of the midwest from the St Lawrence river to at least as far as New Del Rio, hitting every CS territory on the way." Her words stop abruptly as if reaching the end of a list before blurting out a sudden question. "This does not match the profile of a rank and file corporal. Why are you here?” Demonstrating once again that she held the subtlety and social skills of a rock. The usual coldness of her voice at first making it difficult to tell if there had been a sudden accusation laced within the question, one where the answer would determine many things going forward.

However, she might surprise both the psi-stalker and Henry as to her sudden follow up question that suggested that regardless of his answer, they were moving forward as planned. ”Tell me the details of these allies. What is their motivation in helping? How reliable are they?”
