Black Company || Gathering of Heroes OPENING INTERLUDES Sept. 2021

Post by Daniel »

Black Company II

(Introduction to the game. How the game will start. Beginning when Pender starts Mercy Six.)

Alright. So. You are sought out by Sir Redheart. He finds you and proposes hiring you. That will happen in an upcoming post/interlude. Your character may be affiliated with the Legion but more than likely they are not, or used to be or may want to be. But at the start you are not in Arkansas or at the Castle. What follows is for you the Player. Background information that I’d like to share with you…

OUT OF CHARACTER INFO, KNOWN BY THE PLAYER, NOT THE CHARACTER
… here goes. SPOILER WARNING HERE.

The following events take place after Mercy Six (Pender Lumkiss - Rifts Game - Mercy Six) encounter the castle and the lack of Legion members.

Days after they (Mercy Six) leave the castle, Elle of Owls returns to find the castle is empty. Elle is unaware what Mercy Six are up to. She calls for help. A few days later Lord Coake arrives.

Elle of Owls escorted Lord Coake and his lieutenant, Sir Redheart, through the empty council meeting area to the secret tunnel that lead to the secret basement under the castle. Elle looked at the empty seats and felt a great loss. Everyone in the castle had mysteriously disappeared. The only members of the Legion alive as far as she knew were any SET teams out and about. Everyone who had been here was gone. Chance was she had been at a nearby town talking to their leaders. Upon her return there was no one left. As far as she knew, she was the last surviving council member.

The underground basement, subterranean Ley Line and the secrets kept hidden away in the underground area were only know of by a very selective few.

With the Cyber Knight Sir Redheart accompanying them, he would now be in the know. Elle was worried about adding yet another person to those who knew but Lord Coake trusted the Knight and had stated the Knight would be in charge of putting the plan together. Elle wasn’t sure what he meant quite yet. With everyone in the Legion gone or away she had called upon her friend Coake.

Elle thought for just a moment she heard the old Lord of the Cyber Knights grumbling something about Victoria. Elle reflected that Lord Coake had been against keeping Victoria Geist’s body locked up under the castle. He had wanted to destroy her forever. The council had decided the body was to be kept locked up.

Elle supposed he’d been right. As the three stood before the destroyed doors to Geist’s cell she marveled at the destruction. Powerful technology and magic had been used to secure the cell. Large claws had torn the mega damage metal doors and walls leaving deep cuts.

Coake grumbled. Sir Redheart placed his left had on the deep cuts. Elle looked into the dark cell. An evil seemed to emanate outward from within.

Redheart shook and nearly dropped to his knees. Coake grabbed ahold of the man and held him upright.

Redheart groaned then spoke quietly.

“Geist’s body was taken by … Fell? Looking on him hurts…”

“Steady man.”

Elle caught the fear in Coake’s voice as he reassured Redheart. Her stomach turned inside out and she felt weak. If Lord Coake was frightened…

“Lord Coake, I see a massive dragon. Daxon something, not real name but….”

Sir Redheart shook violently in Coake’s grasp. Shaking his head Redheart let the vision go. Standing on his own the Knight still shook a little.

“He’s got her body. He’s got access to some bizarre magic-technology and he’s mad as hell. I couldn’t hold the vision any longer I’m sorry.”

Lord Coake glanced at Elle then back to his Lieutenant.

“Is Daxon connected to … to everyone missing?”

Sir Redheart shuttered then replied: “I saw no connection. But, maybe. Maybe no.”

Lord Coake turned to look at the last leader of the Legion, possibly it’s last member?

“Once again the Legion’s dirty laundry can’t be exposed. The only creature I know that could stand a chance fighting Daxon is one Hudson Blackwell, wherever he is! They’re either brothers or practically brothers. Both dragons anyway. I understand why you called us. With no force of your own, what can you do. Geist being known about or her body disappearing from secret cells under the castle and what not. Not good for your image is it? Under any circumstances.”

The three start walking back up the stairs away from the gloom under the castle.

Elle looked over at the leader of the Cyber Knights. “Lord Coake? I don’t know what to do. I have no way of getting information or fixing this.”

That grumble again, then, “I will have Sir Redheart form a new Black Company. I have access to Blackwell’s horde, we’ll find things with that…. Nevermind that… all you need to know m’lady is we will recruit some heroes who can take the job the Legion cannot be seen doing. I will personally find Blackwell. The Black Company will start looking for answers. Starting in the remains of Gloom.”

Sir Redheart hesitated then asked: “The Gloomscree?”

Lord Coake nodded.

“Yes. The aftermath of the CS nuking. I know it’s an irradiated zone. Where better for Daxon to hide? If not him. There may be clues that are here. Sir Redheart I need you to assemble a team and track down Daxon. Learn as much as you can and find him. Once I have Hudson… well, then hopefully he will help us fight Daxon and we can stop him before he ruins us all.”

Sir Redheart nodded and shook hands with his leader.

“Yes m’Lord. Ma’am a pleasure. G’bye”

As Lord Coake grumbled, Sir Redheart walked away, Elle thought about her own plans and how Lord Coake wouldn’t be happy about what she had in store for the Legion, or what she knew about why everyone was gone, it was no coincidence that she’d been away when things befell the castle, no, not in the least, she would have to be very careful.

Stand by for the Interlude. This game starts as soon as Pender Lumkiss starts his Mercy Six game!

I’ll start the Interlude ASAP (likely tonight). I’ll update you via Discord. For now I wanted you to see some background info and keep the excitement going. Thank you.

Start game with a Interlude!

This thread is for the Interlude. Afterwards follow the link to the next place.

Sir Redheart has dispatched requests to several heroes across the Megaverse. He shows up where you are and asks you to help.

Each Player please write a introduction that both tells us (See Interlude Rules below):
  • where you have been and what you have been up to.
  • present a introduction of you meeting Sir Redheart.
Sir Redheart is a tall, muscular white man around 45 to 50 with black hair with a hint of white in it. He is a friendly sort.
Sir Redheart
Sir Redheart
The Cyber Knight will seek you out and ask you to help the Order. Specifically he will tell you the Legion is in dire trouble and he wants to rebuild a mercenary group called the Black Company. If you are playing a character that knows of the BC Sir Redheart will explain that Lord Coake is looking for Hudson Blackwell. Redheart says further answers are in Newport.

Sir Redheart understands you might need more than the knowledge you would be helping others. He is paying 50k (reflected in your character build) to just attend the intake meeting in Newport, south east of the Castle.

A few months on the living world and he still was constantly agog and often a-gag. And filming. His unceremonious arrival on Wormwood was fortunate geographically in that it was a relatively safe area so he'd not gotten much good footage for an action flick, some nice docu footage for sure though. If he ever got home the Tarn chick would love it. She'd also like the weird worm dude, Wormy, who he spent a couple months travelling with, The little fellow had a keen interest in the Paragons and after Stan showed him some records of the ancient Parables Wormy found a personal connection with the Director, MichaelBay. He'd not really given much thought to directors or writers but Wormy had taught him to appreciate more Paragons than he had before.

They separated ways and Stan had gotten signed up with some mercs guarding a caravan as it passed near dangerous territory. Bringing us to his current reason to be a-gag.

The masked human? was hold a squirming flatworm like creature out to Stan, "She's ready to bud kid, you sure you don't want a regen worm. It only hurts when they burrow in, after that it kinda tickles." Raz offered from behind his horrifying living mask. The man of Action! could see, or imagined he could see, other such symbiotes move beneath the mans skin and tried not to be skeeved out. Despite the revulsion, in the back of his mind he kept a tight reign on Clips, his camera drone. Directing it's shooting was probably all that was keeping his gorge down.
Don't look at the ground. pan up! Focus on the worm thing.

The leader of the Caravan, a Hospitalar named Gorman happened to walk up before Stan could find words. "Lay off the kid Raz, even if he did want it he's riddled with nanites. They'd probably eat the thing in half a day. If she gotta bud give it to one of the boys. Stan, you expecting guests? Scouts came back with cyber knight and mage, they were askin about you. Check the chuckwagon."

Moving through the camp quickly he forwent his usual leisurely pace and breaks to film stock footage. Not that there wasn't plenty to see and film still but he was excited to see others from home, maybe they had a way back. He did slow enough before getting there to get Clips into a good position to film the meeting.

Stan hadn't seen many of the order before getting dimensionally lost but he still recognized the distinctive armor of the cyber knight standing next to a fellow with several magic looking accoutrements.

Clearing his throat to get their attention"Sir Knight, I am Action Stan. What can I do for you."

When the pair turn the wizard is the first to speak up in shock "Holy shit, it really is him, and young...." The shifters eyes glimmer briefly, "Yeah there's a fair bit of temporal drift, can't have been here, long. No wonder Blackwell couldn't find him." Then the Knight cuts in.

"Action Stan, I am Sir Redheart and it is a pleasure to meet you. As my associate indicated people have been looking for you for quite a while. Now that we've found you we would like to ask your help in reassembling a team once founded by your friend Hudson Blackwell called the Black Company. Lord Coake, who is searching for Blackwell, ordered me to assemble a new team to handle some unfortunate business and serve the Legion once more.... but you probably don't know who any of that is, huh?"

Stan shakes his head, "Nope, but you had me at Blackwell. If a team of Hudson's boys needs more firepower I'm in. The Writers always give him good epics."

As the shifter prepared the ritual to open a rift to earth Redheart filled Stan in on some of the basics of the last several decades before returning the time lost techno warrior to Earth near the rally point for the new team.

Somewhere near the east coast: Written By Lars
Archie hummed. Yes his actual circuits hummed in the toaster sized box that made up his actual body. Come to think of it his massive brain imitation body tended to hum too. But in fact Archie was humming a tune. Or trying out some sounds that the machine god believed might sound good strung out together as he hummed. He felt he was getting better. Improving. Assuredly he was. That pleased Archie. He hummed louder.

“What in the hell is wrong with you Arch? Are you malfunctioning? What’s that horrible sound?”

Inwardly Archie grumbled at Hagen for being rude. It was a good thing he liked the idea man. Sometimes the machine god thought about his old and first friend (name). He’s torn him in half and now the insane fool was wandering the he wastes.

Archie imagined Hagen torn in half and giggled inwardly.

Tap. Tap. Tap. Hagen was knocking on the pretend body that everyone thought was Archie’s real body.

Archie ignored his friend and decided he was mad. The mood spoiled. He had thought he was getting better at the humming.

Hagen connected with Archie mind to mind.

“Hey buddy, you okay?”

“I’m fine!”

“Really beca……”

Both man and machine stopped telepathicly talking and listened to a new sound. An alarm. Something small beeping.

Hagen disconnected mentally from Archie and jogged across the command room full of computers.

A loudspeaker boomed in the massive complex.

“What is it Hagen?”

“You can connect to this computer you know!”

Archie laughed across the loudspeaker.

It greatly improved his mental state seeing Hagen run to do something he a machine god could have easily done.

“Arch? You should look at this. Somehow one of you pet projects just came on line. A Stan fellow. It looks like he disappeared decades ago. Isn’t he human? He looks way too young.”

Archie and Hagen watched the screen. This was the most interesting thing they’d seen in weeks.

Re: Black Company || Gathering of Heroes

Post by Wormy »

Wormy doesn't have much in the way of a past. His earliest memory is of destruction and carnage and his good friend he met amongst the debris. Apparently, that mess was Wormy's fault and somehow many of his people were involved in the accident. It put him in a bad place, emotionally, discovering that he had caused the deaths of his own people like that. Wormy's new friend explained to him that his people were used for very bad things by very bad people, though, so it was some small consolation that such a heinous, if inadvertent, deed did some small good in the end.

Wormy didn't have a name, but his new friend seemed to like calling him Wormy, so that is what he goes by now. It seems to make people happy, and that's good enough. After the accident, Wormy and his friend travelled together for a time, but they were separated not long after.

Wormy ran into trouble with some kind of scaly tooth-creature wanting to make a lunch out of him. He wasn't sure how it happened, but they exploded into tiny little pieces just before gobbling him up. He was starting to think it was some kind of pattern...

Disoriented from the explosion and still shaken from nearly being eaten, Wormy kept running and running and passed into a strange land before he knew it. That's when he met @Action Stan! Until then, he hadn't understood his powers, but the human historian would soon enlighten him.

The booming explosions allowed Action Stan to track him down. Witnessing Wormy seemingly explode anything trying to eat him, it was clear that the worm had a very niche gift. The little worm creature must have been one of the chosen of the ancient human hero-turned-deity Michael Bay.

During their travels together, Action Stan regaled Wormy with stories of the Mighty One's exploits and his incalculably destructive abilities. Indeed, it was quickly becoming clear to Wormy that he was chosen by this great human deity. With Action Stan to guide him, things became less hectic for a time. Wormy began praying to the Mighty One and meditating upon His tenets.

As Wormy's connection with his deity grew, so too did his destructive abilities. They were more draining, but could be used to greater effect. Once Action Stan had taught Wormy all that he knew of Mighty Bay, they parted ways. Wormy was once again drawn into another strange world...

It was then that he knew what he had to do. The Mighty Bay wanted him to wonder the land and use His power to help those in need. Up until then, He had been guiding Wormy to the places he needed to be, but now the little Zembahk was capable of protecting himself and had learned of his purpose. So, he set out to do good.

He had many adventures since then. A Humble man carried Wormy around on his neck as they traveled together with his shorter, stranger friend - the one with the unusual magic devices. They, too, parted after a time. If it was meant to be, they would come together again. Only the Mighty One knows what fate has in store for Wormy.

Most recently, a powerful and friendly man calling himself Sir Redheart approached Wormy. He promised Wormy a stick to join his adventure to do good. Apparently the man had heard of Wormy's Bay-given ability to cause destruction and mayhem in the name of justice.

Not sure why the strange man would offer him a stick, Wormy never-the-less agreed to lend him his services. He had visions when meditating that night, and it was clear that the Mighty One wanted him to join Sir Redheart. So, Wormy put the little stick in the magic pouch around his neck and followed Sir Redheart towards the next adventure.

Charon had spent the last several months exploring fully her new role as a psychopomp--a guardian and guide of the Dead. Initially, she had simply sought to confer with those who might have unfinished business, to put their worries and their souls to rest. But time after time, doing the work of the Dead had brought her into conflict with the living. Sometimes it was a matter of their opposing whatever it was the dead had asked of her; other times, they were very much the focus of those requests.

Her most recent such 'job' entailed the elimination of a particularly vile group of bandits operating under cover of a small mercenary company in MercTown, led by the Barton Brothers, Theodore and Franklin. They would take a protection detail, then, when they and their clients were well into the wilderness, would execute them all without mercy, looting their possessions--"Getting paid twice", they called it. Most recently, they had performed this routine on a larger group of refugees under the watch of another Lyn-Srial, Fawl-kree, who was typically heroic in nature, but somewhat naive.

She had come across the mass grave entirely by accident, when she was traveling and saw boars digging up the ground and coming up with limbs covered in decomposing flesh. Chasing the scavengers away, she communed with their spirits, and determined that they did, indeed, need help resting. They were only too eager to commit their remains to her service in exchange for gaining their vengeance.

The bandits were drunk, and sloppy. They didn't realize they were surrounded until their recent victims came walking out of the woods around the clearing where they'd made camp. They panicked, and the fight was over almost before it had begun. She, herself, participated only slightly in the battle, but she did take some pleasure in controlling Theodore's mind and making him shoot his brother in the head--for two who had traded so much in betrayal, it seemed a fitting end. Theodore was then overwhelmed by the undead refugees.

The bandits, it turned out, had not had time to sell their loot. Personal items she placed in marked graves where the zombies were laid to rest; most other gear was, with the permission of her 'clients', taken for expenses. Fawl-kree's spirit, however, insisted she take his Gladius armor (already modified for a Lyn-Srial's four arms and wings) for herself, using the funds she acquired to have it refitted and repaired (the bandits had done some damage with their grenades when they killed him).

She gratefully took the gift, and traveled to a well-known Techno-wizard, who discussed with her how she'd come to own the armor in the first place as he examined it to quote the cost of repairs. Something in her tale made the dwarf chuckle, and he told her that not only could he fix it, but could also convert it into a Techno-Wizardry marvel. She admitted she only had the funds for the repair job itself, but he simply grinned and shook his head.

"Not a problem at all. See, I know a man--Sir Redheart--who's seeking folks to commit to some great task. If you are willing to listen to his pitch--and mind you, this is just for hearing him out--I think he'll cover the cost of the conversion."

She was both curious and wary--after all, fifty thousand credits just to listen to a job offer suggested that it was going to be a fairly dire task. But then, she was well-suited to such work, and would be moreso with this improved armor.... She agreed, and Hans Grueber arranged for her to meet Sir Redheart, long enough to seal the deal. The reputation of the Cyber-Knights was enough to allay her concerns that the job itself might be unsavory in nature, so she said she would come to Newport as soon as the armor was finished, and hear him out.

    • Backstory: A tale of misfortune from your hero’s past, perhaps revealing something of his Hindrances or a dark secret.

"Comes to Moderation in a couple days in the evening to discuss a proposal I have for you. I will give you 50,000 credits just for showing up. If there are others that you trust and think are useful, you can send them too. If they are worthy of my time, they will also be given their own 50,000 credits."

That is what Sir Redheart, the Cyber-Knight said to Hans, or at least the part that stuck in his head.

I wonder if I will get a finder's fee for bringing in more 'Worthy' candidates...

Just a couple years ago, Hans had left his family to work with the Anvil. They were a mercenary group that specialized in guard duty. Not the most exciting of work, and the pay reflected this, but they had convinced the young Dwarf to sign up with them... and they still paid better than his Father did for working in the family workshop.

The first, and last job Hans worked for them was in a town he couldn't even remember the name of. Nobody really remembered it anymore. After just over a year working there, a rival mercenary company, the Hammers, smashed the Anvil so badly that they were not able to continue. Hans had heard about the Hammers from the other members of the Anvil. They were untrustworthy and would kill anyone instead of taking prisoners... and would just loot the dead bodies. After witnessing the destruction from in his workshop, Hans knew that there was nothing he could do, but couldn't bring himself to leave. After spending minutes debating with himself about what to do, Hans eventually grabbed his kit and left the town just before one of the Hammers' big mechanical Robot Vehicles turned their guns on him. He was able to escape, but not before he was forced to activate the TW Salvage Armor's protective matrix to avoid its attention.

Weeks later, Hans had finally made his way to Newport. If it wasn't for him bumping into what looked like an Ogre, Humble he named himself, who said he knew him from somewhere (somewhen?!?) Hans would not have made his way safely. All of the Golems he had created for the Anvil had either been destroyed in the conflict... or were trying to hold the line to save anyone they could when the Anvil had been routed and destroyed. Now it was time to work for someone who had one a shop, and earn enough seed money to make another Golem or two and try to join another mercenary company... one that preferably paid better yet could still be trusted.

Mavin IV

The Altaran, clad in gleaming armor that resembled a glowing star crouched low at a circle stone gateway. She had a sword buckled at the hip. Its plain scabbard hiding the blade’s silvered and enchanted craftsmanship. She drew a deep breath and pressed her palm against the circle of stone. It flared with blue energy. Voss you better be right. Dorian, you better never find me… The last thoughts of Ducky Boss as she took one step through the portal. She was exhausted having been chased through three galaxies by Dr. Dorian Fairchild, the Universe’s Most Nefarious master mind of deeds unwell. Would it be that this portal would grant her the reprieve she so desired?

Earth

She never remembered what happened exactly on her arrival on the other side. The first thing she remembered was waking with a figuring hovering near her while she lay in a soft bed.
“My lady…. We were not sure you would make it. However I am glad you are on the mend. I would normally wait, but my need is urgent and utmost. Once you have gathered strength I want to talk to you about joining my cause and working for The Black Company.”

His words are kind and voice sincere…. A bit desperate.
She responded with regained strength, “Yeah like Totally, so like can you tell me where in the noid am I?”
The man chuckled, “Of course. You are on Earth.”

Earth? Barf me out…
Ducky sat up slowly slightly dizzy. Not for the first time she wished she could see. The man seemed kind.
“That portal was so grody. So like once the room settles, let’s grab my gear and you tell me about this black company and what you need ok? I am pretty much a sucker for a sob story so like I will totally help you. Mister…?”

“Redheart.”

The Well of Souls was a deep place Humble found clarity in. Within the well his mind was opened and he was able to think in a way few other opportunities gave him.

As his strength was used by Asnir to help fuel the spell being created Humble could not remember what happened. Eventually all his strength pulled away from him. Without knowing, was he dying or simply falling into the sleep that so many people practice, he knew it was the first time he had ever felt fatigue.

Whatever it Humble did not know how long the time lasted. As his mind came to him, he heard the sounds of battle, plasma fire, and great explosions. His strength was coming back to him as he felt more and more of the conflict soaking into him. Chaos, war, conflict, these were the things that refreshed Humble, restoring the strength he had given over in the Well of Souls.

Pulled forth Humble looked, the battle raging around him filling his rage, he could see the xiticix swarming around the Coalition force squeezed into a cave of some sort. These were the humans from the same world he had been pulled to so many times before, humans who knew only obedience to an evil emperor. Humble did not know why he would be pulled to them or felt the need to aid them as they fought off what they must have expected to be their last stand in these strange tunnels. But he did not need to know, he could feel the battle and the xiticix must be stopped.

With a roar he lunged into the battle, slicing the xiticix apart with the powerful weapons he was born to, ripping them apart with his powerful arms, and smashing them into pulp with the bodies of their own fallen. He would not be slowed and would not relent. It was only after some time he noticed the strange feeling of the coalition laser hitting him as he rescued the humans from their insect-like enemies. Occasionally one of the humans would be terrified as Humble moved in their direction and fire its weapons at him.

When it was over the xiticix chose not to retreat, instead fighting to the last. Less than a dozen of the human remained, their weapons depleted, they had nothing but fear left as he turned to face them. “Which way is out of tunnels?” he asked them. His chest still heaving from the thrill of the battle.

The men had nothing left in them and simply pointed. Humble nodded and began walking to leave. “You do not need to fear me today, I was brought here by your need to defeat the monsters.” He tried to assure them before turning to leave. It was obvious the reassurance did nothing for them as they watched him leave.

Humble did not know which version of the world this was. But he would travel and find out. From this rebirth he had many new adventures before coming across a new Hans. Seeing the little being Humble was excited. “Hans Gruber!” He bellowed excited to see the wizard that traveled with him so many time before. But as the he turned to see Humble the look on his face was not a look of confidence or recognized friendship.

Hans looked as if he was about to be attacked as a giant clay golem moved between Humble and Hans. Humble knocked the creature down and beat on it, before finally tearing the thing in half. Looking over at Hans he asked “Are you okay, what did that thing attack you Hans?”

From there it was only sometimes and a bit of explaining. This was not the Hans Humble had fought the Black Cat demon side by side with. This was not the Hans who went to the well of souls, or the Hans who fought the slave rebellion on Shaintar. This was a new Hans, one who Humble would have to forge a new friendship with.

From there Humble traveled with Hans helping him set up a new work station and fighting when the moment was called for. It was in one of these moments of peace that Hans and Humble was approached by Sir Redheart, Humble relaxed listening to the proposal brought forth and nodding. “I will go. This must be what I am here for.” He said not waiting for Hans to decide. Humble knew eventually the little guy would come around, but he could not deny those who needed his help. Receiving instructions the two of them headed out to this place called Moderation to wait for more instructions.

Re: Black Company || Gathering of Heroes OPENING INTERLUDE

Post by Tula »

It was raining. Tula’s thick, dwarven-made boots were wet and heavy with mud. Her cupboards were empty in the old machine shop she was using as an apartment in this twobit mining town. Even if there had been supplies, her stomach roiled at the thought of another reconstituted meal of mush. Tula jumped off the back bumper of the lurching transport wagon before it had come to a complete stop. She was stomping the mud off her feet while her “co-workers”, and she used that term lightly, were still fighting each other to get out of the seats and down the steps. Their shift at the strip mine had ended and it was time for the rowdy miners to spend the credits they’d earned that day blasting and hauling ore. Tula shoved her way into Micky’s Minefield, the surprisingly less obnoxious of the two bars in town, and ordered steak and beer. She stripped out of her rain gear as she commandeered a corner booth and slung the wet slicker over one bench, a tactical move to dissuade anyone from sitting down with her. She settled into the other bench, drying the ends of her bleached white hair with the bottom of her mostly dry flannel shirt. She wore it in one long braid these days, like a loose fuse trailing down her wide back.

While she sipped her beer, Tula watched the other patrons at the bar. She’d been here for months, knew their names and most of their bad habits, but she didn’t trust any of them. While she was hardly the only dwarf, or even the only woman, she wasn’t one of them. She didn’t belong. There was always a part of her brain that was waiting for one of them to stab her in the back somehow. Either literally or figuratively, her hind brain didn’t care. She’d been screwed over one too many times by captains and crews who were supposed to have her back to trust anyone anymore. And how much longer did she have before someone around here took notice of how much she knew, how she marched like she’d been in an army, or how her gear was consistently better than the junk they sold at the company store? She’d come to this muddy hole in the ground to hide out. She didn’t know if she wanted to hide from the people she’d hurt, the people who had hurt her, or from herself.

Her steak came, and for a couple blissful moments, Tula closed her eyes and let the raucous bar fade away as she savored the hot meal. She was startled out of her moment of bliss by the sound of a chair scraping across the floor nearby. Her eyes popped open and she flipped her grip on the steak knife in her hand. A tall cyber knight was setting a chair at the end of her table and settling himself into it. He seemed unconcerned about her knife.

“I think you may be lost, mister.” Tula growled at him. What was he doing here bringing all this attention down on her?! Everyone in the place was staring at them!

The man chuckled, his eyes crinkling deeply as though he laughed often. “No. I know where I am and I’ve found who I’m looking for. You, on the other hand. You’re the one wandering around at loose ends.” He thunked his helmet down on the bench next to her rain gear and raked his fingers through his dark hair. “I’ve got a job for you, Ms… Jewel.” He said the name as though he knew it wasn’t her real one. In truth it wasn’t. She’d used the common dwarven name when she arrived in town and no one had batted an eye.

“I got a job, Sir Tin Can. Ask anyone here. We just got off shift.” Tula continued to growl and glared at him while waving her knife at the now almost silent bar.

“And a good sort they seem to be.” The knight turned in his seat and smiled at the miners and then spoke louder. “Shall I buy them a round for a hard day's work? Make it two! Barman! Two rounds for everyone in the place, on me!” He tossed a cred card to the pot-bellied man behind the bar and the crowd cheered! Soon everyone was calling out their orders and pushing their way to the counter to get fresh drinks. The cyber knight turned a smug smirk on Tula and leaned in closer, his voice pitched so that only she could hear it over the din of the crowd.

“My name is Sir Redheart. I’ve come to recruit you, EOD Specialist Tula Embersnow, to work for The Black Company. The Order, the Tomorrow Legion, and perhaps even the world needs you…” Tula resisted the urge to roll her eyes at his dramatic turn of phrase and just shook her head instead. He continued to explain the need, the mission and then the pay while she finished her steak. He went on as though she wouldn’t possibly deny his invitation to his mercenary company. Tula thought about refusing him, but he’d blown her cover and he was offering a really nice payment for doing something more entertaining than blowing holes in mud. It was time to move on anyway. She nodded her agreement, shook his hand when offered and gathered her gear. Best to get out of town tonight before the crowd finished their drinks and started asking questions. She’d missed riding her hoverbike too. It had been collecting dust for months now. She would head out tonight and nap on the road somewhere when she got tired.
