Chapter 7: Back to Town

Post by Pursuit »

We Happy Few

Tired and bedraggled, the members of the 32nd SET practically drag themselves back through the mists outside of Psyscape. Fortunately for the group, Sis is still carrying the orb of mists and you have very little trouble finding your way back to the city proper.

Once inside, you find that the judges are all booked up -or, in the case of Judge Iasus, out of the city entirely- and you are shown back to your quarters at the Consulate.

With nothing else to occupy you, you have plenty of time for a meal and a night of rest on an honest to goodness bed before figuring out your next steps.

In the morning, you each find a purple-robed attendant waiting outside your door holding a data pad. Each is different: they may be human or dwarf or any of a dozen other heritages, but they each tell you that you have been summoned to the Psychic Academy for a post- deployment evaluation. Perhaps it should not surprise you, but the leadership of Psyscape takes the mental health of its citizens and agents very seriously.

After you complete a few questionnaires, each of you is taken in on your own to meet with the doctor who will perform your evaluation.

As fate would have it, you are each assigned to see "Doctor Runeslayer." When it is your turn, you enter an eclectically decorated room with a thick, pre-rifts style shag rug on the floor and a massive black battleaxe mounted on the wall.

An orc woman who looks roughly the size of a small armored personnel carrier offers you a pleasant smile and invites you to sit down.

"Please, have a seat," she says. "I understand you have been through some rather difficult times of late, and I would like to take some time to talk with you about your experiences."

How it works

Interlude time! Write an interlude about any one of your adventures from your characters point of view. As a reward, you may choose one of three things: (1) a Benny (always useful!), (2) Conviction, or (3) the removal of one minor Hindrance your character picked up after play began.

If you are feeling particularly ambitious, you may write about two experiences and take either another Benny (but not another Conviction, sorry) OR remove a second minor Hindrance. If you do both, you may instead remove one major Hindrance.
For Hedge and Squidge Only
Being from Psyscape, you both know Dr. Runekiller's reputation well. She runs the Psychic Academy and might just be the most powerful psionic alive.

Goswin greets the attendant with a smile and listens patiently to the dwarf as she explains why she is here. The young elementalist follows her across Psyscape without complaint until he arrives at the doctor. When the door opens and he's admitted in, Goswin looks around at the furnishings with wonder then takes a seat as instructed.
Doctor Runeslayer wrote:"Please, have a seat," she says. "I understand you have been through some rather difficult times of late, and I would like to take some time to talk with you about your experiences."
Goswin takes a moment to consider he question then begins to speak, "Well, it all started recently. I lived alone with my mother in a remote part of the Magic Zone. My mother was resourceful, but she didn't have any particular strengths. Just a steel will to survive and raise me. It wasn't easy, but as I grew up, I developed a connection to nature and the elements that helped us survive."

The look of contentment from remembering old memories fades as Goswin catches up to the present, "Mother caught some kind of illness and passed away recently. She taught me what I needed to know to survive, and she even taught me a thing or two about getting along with other people. When she passed, I decided to leave and help others. It's how I met up with the rest of my team."

The things Goswin had seen up to this point did disturb him. There are horrible and terrifying things in the magic zone, but most of the ones he had experience with are natural terrors. The evil creatures he had encountered since joining the 32nd SET were different. They hadn't had as much of an effect on Goswin as some of his new friends, but they had been weighing on his mind.

"Why do these creatures do the things they do?" he asks Doctor Runeslayer, "When we arrived in Psyscape, we had just helped one of your warriors capture a soul stealer who had a small force of the soulless at her call. Then we found a nest of monstrous creatures in some sort of pocket dimension. They were brain washing people and attempted to scatter them across the dimension when we found them. What would have happened to them if we didn't save them? What if we never showed up at all?"

Goswin shakes his head and continues his story, "And then we left to help a small village. Some kind of large demon creature was leading a small army of demons to wipe them out. Why? It doesn't make any sense. There's plenty of space in the magic zone. There's no shortage of food if you're strong or resourceful enough to acquire it. Why couldn't those demons make their own home instead of taking the human's home? I don't understand."

I don't seem to have accrued any hindrances, so I will take a benny and a conviction.

Dr. Runeslayer nods along politely as @Goswin Aigner talks, occasionally making a note on her notepad but otherwise staying mostly silent. When he finishes, he feels energized and like a new man, as if a weight he hadn't know was there had been lifted from his shoulders.

Billy walks into the office and looks around a bit apprehensively. Dr. Runeslayer gestures towards a couch and states ”Please be seated.” Avoiding looking directly at her Billy does so, but only on the edge of the couch. It is almost as if he is expecting to need to physically defend himself.

”It is my understanding that your are relatively new to this planet. Now adding to that you have come to a city that is not always accessible. I am sure that is a bit overwhelming.” Dr. Runeslayer then stops speaking and tries to look Billy in the eye.

Still not meeting her eyes Billy nods. ”Yep. Been a bit weird that fo' sure. Y'all got lots of them purple blue light doors all over and stuff be dropping out of them on the regular. But I's fought some strange things back home so I just shoot what I'm told, or what looks like it wants to eat me, and things been ok.” Billy's eyes finally meet Runeslayer's but not for much longer than a blink before he is scanning the room again.

Runeslayer smiles, ”I am sure you are a good fighter and an asset to your team. But surly some of this is.. over the top, even for you. How are you sleeping?”

Billy shrugs. ”Fine.” If'n you don't count the nightmares.

Runeslayer cocks her head to one side. ”You want to tell me about the nightmares?”

Billy's head snaps to look directly at her a frown of anger on his face. ”You shouldn't be reading my mind without askin'. Ain't polite.”

Runeslayer sits back a little and raises her hands palms forward. ”No mind reading, I promise. I have just seen enough to know the signs. You don't stop looking for threats. You are ready to jump up in an instant. And your hand is looking for that reassurance.” This last comment is accompanied with pointing to Billy's right hand.

Billy looks down and sees that his fingers are rubbing on his leg about where his holster would be. He moves his hands to the middle of his lap and claps them together. He then looks back up much calmer. ”Yea, there have been a few rough nights. But it is no less'en I deserve. I failed to help them and someone else had to pick up my slack.”

Runeslayer frowns. ”I am not sure I know what you are talking about. Care to explain?”

Billy's eyes start floating around the room again but with much less urgency. ”We was checking on some strange happenings here in the city and foun' what looked like a secr't entrance to the hide out. When we when' through there was only empty space all over. No floor, no ceiling, no horizon. We could walk though and we eventually come to some sort a classroom. The 'teacher' was saying stuff that I di'n't understand and all the 'students' was in a daze. There was some magic stuff happened and when we kill't the demon thing there was an explosion. All the students was fly'n off in different direction but they was still just starring into nothin'.”

Billy's hand starts feeling for his gun again but he does not notice. ”All of us started doin' differ'nt things to try to catch folk 'for they got too far away. Castle, one o' the others in my group, used me as a jumpin' post and grabbed a couple. I took the rope he left hanging behind him and used him like a real bad lasso. I was able to hook up several of 'em but a couple slipped off the rope.”

Billy's eyes finally come to rest on the floor in front of him. Or more accurately, somewhere far beyond the floor. ”They's faces was blank but I could see the fear. The eyes always says more than the mouth ever can. Some'n else, Vincent or Hedge I don' recall, was able to get to 'em. Was able to save them when I failed. So when I see them faces in my sleep I know they gots the right to be mad at me. They could have died and it woulda been my fault.”

Silence hangs in the room for a few seconds. Finally Runeslayer shifts in her seat and shakes her head. ”How can it be your fault? I read the report on that incident. From what I understand everyone in that classroom was there of their own accord. It was their choice to go in and be 'taught' whatever was being said. You did save several of them. Not only the ones you caught personally but you were able to help Castle get to several as well. And it was your rope that was used to tie them together to get them out. If you had not been there several more could have easily been lost and it would have been much more difficult to get the ones saved to safety. You did great!”

Billy looks up at Runeslayer, guilt all over his face. ”But that ain't the first time someone could have, prob'ly did die, 'cause a me. When I was back home there was some weird stuff goin' on up at the Krensky farm. Me, the sheriff and a couple other dep'ties went to see what we could find. When we got there everything was torn to pieces. Buildings, animals... people.”

Billy's eyes drop back to the floor. ”There was a trail of destruction and we folla'd it. It went up inta one of the canyons an' we could see some lights flashing in there. We spread across the floor of the canyon and started forward. We got 'bout a hunderd meters in when it curved and we saw the scariest sight. There was a half dozen monsters millin' around a blue circle of lightnin'. Inside the circle was what looked like a jungle with all the trees and green.”

A shudder runs through Billy. ”Then one o' them things saw us. It raised its hands in the air and let off a shriek to bust your ears. The rest of 'em turned an' they all started running at us. Everyone started shooting. Everyone but me. I ran and took cover behin' the biggest rock I could find. Hell, even the pansy elf was standin' there shootin'. One of the creatures must a seen me running 'cause it circled 'round the rock lookin' for me.”

Billy looks back at Runeslayer. ”I was so scar'd I pissed myself and took off. I wasn't lookin' where I was goin' and ran right into that lightinin' circle. I fell and hit several branches on my way down knockin' me out. When I come too there was no circle to be seen and I was here. I don' know if anyone survived and I was no help. Jus' like I was no help to them folk in that floaty place.”

Runeslayer nods her head. ”I can see how you can make that connection but there are a few things to remember. When you saw those things at home it was the first time you had encountered anything like that, right?” She pauses for Billy to nod. ”So being scared is nothing to be ashamed of. I remember my first encounter with a truly horrendous beast. It took everything I had to stay and fight it. In addition you kept your cool in 'that floaty place' and were able to help several people. Including your allies.”

She sits back in her chair and places her hands in her lap. ”You need to remember what is and is not in your control. Sure, you could have stayed and fought the monsters. But your body decided it was more important to be safe and did what it could to make that happen. It was beyond your control. It was an instinctive response and those are very hard, if not impossible, to control.”

”On the other hand, because you ran you were here to help save those people. You had control of how you responded to seeing them floating away and you acted in a way that was helpful to them and your allies. Ok, you personally did not save them all but you did save some and that allowed your allies to save the rest. If I remember correctly there were no lives lost. You helped make that happen.”

Billy sits in silence most of a minute looking Runeslayer in the eyes. Finally he nods. ”Yea, I did help some of 'em. And when we was helping that town being attacked by that shadow thing I was able to help Sis back to her feet. I guess I ain't a total fuck up.” He pauses for a few seconds. ”But I still ran when the elf stood. I will have to work on that.”

Runeslayer nods and smiles. ”We all have things we are still working on. You will get there.” She then stands up and walks Billy to the door. ”If you want to come back and talk about that, or anything really, let me know. I am sure I can work you in.”

Billy will reduce his PTSD back to minor.

Sis enters the shrinks office, a little annoyed at the need for an eval, but also impressed the Psyscape takes good enough care of its soldiers to require it.

"Not exactly the decoration I would expect" She says, nodding her head toward the battle axe. "Doesn't exactly promote peace and relaxation does it?"

The Orcish doc shrugs, a movement that by itself seems a monumental feat to Sis "We all had our jobs before we found our true passion's" she says leaving Sis to wonder what this woman did before her current occupation.

"Please, have a seat," she says. "I understand you have been through some rather difficult times of late, and I would like to take some time to talk with you about your experiences."

"Not a lot a talk about. Met some faux-Zombies, escorted them here. Crossed into a another dimension, fought off a bat-shark... A bark? a Shat? Yeah... Definitely a Shat... saved some poor souls from being tossed into oblivion. Ran into to some real zombies, took care of them, then saved a isolated backwater town from some demons. Sure its been busy, but not exactly notable..."

Psyscape
Afternoon
Round 0

Dazzle entered Dr. Runeslayer’s office, surprised to find a half-orc. Dazzle carried a large cup of coffee, the largest she could find in Psyscape, that she’d picked up on the way to the appointment. She had a few bags under her eyes, though she’d done a decent job with her concealer that morning.

The doctor watched as the first thing the pink-haired young woman did was walk around the office and open up all the blinds wide, blinking in the bright sunlight.

Finally Dazzle sat down, taking a sip of her coffee.

“Have you been sleeping?” Runeslayer asked.

Dazzle just shrugged, avoiding eye contact.

“Care to talk about it? They tell me you aren’t using your rooms, but going down to sleep in your armor. I know Glitterboys--”

“Grrrl,” Dazzle said automatically, growling out the sound. “It’s a glittergirl. Girl’s can have power, too.” She looked in challenge at the doctor.

Runeslayer chuckled. “Yes, they can,” she agreed. “I wasn’t even questioning that. Why are you so defensive?”

Dazzle shrugged. “I dunno. All the boys used to tell me I couldn’t be a Glitterboy because I was a girl. They made fun of me when they found out I was learning.”

“We can discuss that later, maybe,” Runeslayer said. “Right now, it just avoids the question of why you’re sleeping in your armor?”

Another shrug. “I feel safe there. The dark can’t get me there.”

“The dark?” Runeslayer glanced at the windows.

“I don’t know. It’s stupid. I’m stupid,” Dazzle said. “But ever since we rescued that village, I...I can’t be in the dark.”

“So you turn all the lights on,” the orc nodded.

“Yeah, but...it’s still out there. So I go into Princess, where I know I’m safe. Nothing can hurt me in there. I turn on the lights, some music.”

“But you still don’t sleep.”

“A little. Not much.” Another long drink of coffee.

“I saw you canceled your gig last night. Is this because of the dark?”

Dazzle looked away, ashamed.

“Why don’t you tell me what happened?”

“I don’t know,” Dazzle said. “There was this...big...shadowy...demon thing. It, like, nearly killed Sis. I...I got so scared. I thought we were all gonna die. And it was night, and so dark...it blocked out the moon. I froze. I...I didn’t even attack it. I just...I just let the others handle it and squashed the little demons. But I’m the one in the armor!” she said with distress. “I should be...heroic! Save people! Maybe...maybe I’m not cut out to be a glitterboy.” She hung her head, her blue eyes hiding behind a fall of pink hair.

“Hm.” Runeslayer made a note.

“Hm what?” Dazzle asked, scowling.

“Well, I was under the impression that you were a hero,” the orc said. “You saved those people from the featureless place, the classroom.”

“That was mostly the others,” Dazzle said. “I’m not so good out of the armor.”

“I understand it was a team effort. Isn’t that how these things work? And you did save some.”

Dazzle shrugged. “I guess.”

“Maybe being a hero is about more than saving people, Dazzle. Maybe it’s about...showing up when others don’t. You didn’t want to come here this morning, but you did. I think that shows a small bit of heroism, a willingness to realize you need help, that you can’t do it on your own. This is why you have teammates. One stick breaks easily, but a bundle of sticks…”

Dazzle sipped her coffee, looking contemplative.

“Would you like me to teach you a few exercises to help you get over your fear?” Runeslayer asked.

Dazzle dropped her gaze to her coffee. She sniffed, and her eyes were damp when she looked up. “I...I think I’d like that,” she said with a small smile.

It takes Hedge a while to go see Doctor Runeslayer. Each day that passes he sets the goal to go, but "something" comes up - a visit to on old friend in the city, training, a meeting. The reasons don't really matter they are mostly just excuses anyway. The Cyber Knight grows more restless with each day that he spends avoiding the inevitable.

Instead he turns to sparring. Training with Psi-Warriors is a sure way to improve skill with a psi-sword. At first it is friendly and jovial, then something snaps. Hedge attacks each newcomer with increasing ferocity putting all his rage and skill on display. Young warriors avoid fighting and older ones, who can feel his range shake their heads. Finally, the day comes when Hedge shows up at the training yard and no one is there to fight him.

Instead, in the middle of the fighting circle a lone figure sits on a chair.

Walking quietly to the circle, Hedge hears his footsteps on the gravel in the absence of the usual din of the training yard.Doctor Runeslayer looks up from the seat.

"Welcome Sir Agathon. I thought today you could battle demons instead of psi-warriors."

Unable to avoid the Doctor any longer Hedge shrugs, lights a smoke and sits on the the ground.

"You can read my mind and feel my emotions. So I'm just gonna let that happen." Hedge says quietly, "Once you see it like I see it you'll understand."

With that the Cyber Knight replays his greatest failures. It is not hard to recall, it plays constantly in his waking and his dreaming. The loss of his team in the days of the first return. The failed children. Burning towns. Bleeding comrades. Each scene washing wordless out of him in waves and waves of psychic and empathic grief.

To observers no words are spoken, no glances exchanged just two people sitting along in a circle.

Lost in his past, Hedge wallows. Then, Doctor Runeslayer enters each scene. At each moment the two psychics commune about, loss, grief, guilt, shame. Hedge expresses it with thoughts in way words could never express and the Doctor receives it on a deeper level than possible for non-psychics. In each moment the Doctor allows Hedge what he needs: consolation, forgiveness, resolve - and the occasional admonishment. Past and present blend together and Doctor Runeslayer paints a sequence of a future. A new possibility, one where redemption is possible, where loss is inevitable but not in vain, one where there can be a future full of hope.

After a few moments, that feel like a lifetime, the two psychics emerge from their shared reality. The tension falls from Hedge's shoulders, his eyes calm, and his position serene. The lit cigarette hand limply from his lip, temporarily forgotten. The Doctor stands, picks up his chair and prepares to leave.

"Same time next week?"

Hedge only nods. It was time to rest.

After much hemming and hawing, Vincent finally goes to see the Psychiatrist. You don’t know quite what happens during the four hour(!) session, but when he comes out, there is something different about Vincent. There’s a lightness to his step, and he looks like he’s trying to smile which is somewhat grotesque. He comes to each member of the group and gives what is pretty obviously a rehearsed speech.

“I’m sorry, truly, I am, but I think I’m going to stay here for a bit.” His eyes flick back in the direction of the therapists quarters. “I’ll join back up with you down the road, I hope, but…I can’t quite explain it, but I feel like I belong here more than I ever have before. I don’t mean any offense by that or anything it’s just…strange.” He shakes hands or gives a begrudging hug when it’s insisted, but shortly after he gathers his things and walks back towards the Administrative Building where his therapy was conducted. Along the way he catches the eye of a tall athletic man, with a mean look on his face. Something nonverbal communicates between the pair, and they each give the other a nod as they head on their respective ways. The mean looking guy walks up to the group.

A tall man with a build that suggests exercise is something he does in a professional capacity heads to the group. His pale blue eyes survey the members of the 32nd, undoubtedly making some internal judgement about everyone.
”Hello. I’m Jones. They want me to tag along, if that’s alright with you.”

He's about to say something else when he notices @Squidge. His previously icy demeanor melts into a face splitting grin. "Squidge?! Is that you?! Long time no see, how have you been?"

Psyscape
Morning
Round 0

Sixteen Tons

A deep bass voice pumped out of Princess’ speakers as Dazzle made a few minor tweaks and touch ups to the Glitter Grrrl!!! when the new guy approached the team. He seemed to be a friend of Squidge.

Dazzle finished adjusting the draw angle of the mount for her new anti-personnel laser cannon and then wiped her hands on a cleaning rag.

“Nice to meet you, Jones,” she said, tossing her pink hair and flashing him a stunning smile. “What’s your specialty?” She offered him her hand.

Squidge was just coming from her meeting with Runekiller when a familiar voice accosted her.

She looked over, squinting slightly as she scanned the people...then lit up when she saw who it was.

"Jones!"

The crowd meant nothing, as Squidge ran straight through any intervening obstacles, including pedestrians. She was quite solid though when she grabbed Jones into a hug. Even in Psyscape, psi-ghosts were a rare sight, and after a long history of exploitation and persecution, they stuck together. In this case, literally.

Finally she released him and swatted his armor's chestpiece. "None of us heard anything from you since you went out last!"

Squidge had questions, plenty of them, but realized that Dazzle was standing here too, and she was probably interrupting.

"Oh, oops, sorry. We can catch up later, Jones." With a nod, she added, "Good to see you're okay though."

Jones nods to @Squidge. "We definitely need to catch up!"

He turns to @Dazzle , still smiling. He gives her a firm handshake and smirks at her question. "My specialty? That's a good question! Let's see, night time raids, snatch and grabs, basically any kind of dirty work that is required. I'm good in a high pressure situation, and am a firm Psyscape loyalist. That's kind of an answer, I guess?"

Psyscape
Morning
Round 0

Dazzle smiled at Jones and nodded. “Nice specialty. Very much not mine,” the pink-haired girl said with a chuckle, putting a hand on the Glitter Grrrl!!! armor they stood next to. “Hear me coming a mile away.”

Jones grins, which is more scary than pleasant. He definitely has a resting mean face and honestly just looks irritated all of the time.
"I'd hate to be in the other end of that, that's for sure!" he tells @Dazzle

A subtle shift in his facial features and you can tell he's back to business mode.

"I just got my orders half an hour ago, they didn't even have time to brief us. So what's up.wth this outfit? What are we doing?"

"Well, hello," Goswin greets @Jones with a smile, "I'm Goswin. I'm very familiar with the Magic Zone, and I can make use of the natural energy of the elements that always surround us. We were just discussing our options. Some of us are going to escort some Psyscape personnel to Castle Refuge, the Tomorrow Legion's base of operations, and the rest of us are going to undertake a diplomatic mission for the judges. There's a community of necromancers that we need to make nice with instead of dissuading through the usual methods."

"Nice to meet you, @Goswin Aigner." Another firm hand shake.

"Interesting. I'm game wherever I'm needed, but I think if you put @Squidge and I on the same team, it's basically like cheating." Another grin.

White Castle strolled into the office of Doctor Runeslayer without much fanfare or flamboyance. Things had been good since they returned to Psyscape as there was plenty of history, archealogy, archictecture, and such things for Castle to stay busy with. In fact as he strolled into the office his mind was somewhere else and he was deep in thought piecing another mystery together.

Even though the purple robed figure had come for him, Castle had left way earlier to study buildings and read up on history. In fact that one day the purple robed figure had shown up was the only night he had actually slept in his bed. All the other days and nights had been spent around Psyscape or in the various libraries.

Castle entered the room, completely unattentive. Found a chair, sat down, and continued to fit the mental pieces together of a puzzle in his head. He had no idea where he was and was completely oblivious to the attempts at conversation, until he got thumped on the nose by Runeslayer and found himself staring up from the floor at a very well dressed and well mannered orc woman.

"Uh, hello. Where am I? And why am I laying on the ground as if I had been sitting in a chair before?"

"Mr. Castle, you are here for a post-mission evaluation. You are a little later than I expected, however now is a good time. So let's talk."

Getting up off the floor, Castle rights the chair first, then admires the chair.

"Great taste there. I have never seen an actual Queen Victorian Armchair. And in such good condition."

"Mr. Castle, will you please take a seat?"

Runselayer pointed at the chair that Castle had just righted. Castle shook his head and sat instead in the deep shag carpet.

"Ma'am, what was it you wanted to talk about," Castle said as he stared at the impressive battle Axe on the wall.

Before Runeslayer could say anything, Castle blurted out, "Is that a Guar'tang? I never thought it was so big, but if it's yours it would have to be big."

"MR> CASTLE, PLEASE," Runeslayer bellows and Castle shuts up.

He has a comment but Runeslayer lifts a finger and shakes her head "NO."

So Castle sits quietly with his thoughts carving out new neuro pathways through his brain, OUCH!
