Chapter 6: Heroes of Our Time

Post by Venatus Vinco »

Finding Fanya
After taking time to rest, recover, and regroup the 1st SET finds themselves with a new sense of purpose: stop the Nightingale demon from delivering its stolen goods to the demon lord Chort. The stakes are high and time is short. However, ridding the Megaverse of the Nightingale for good requires preparation. The wandering Mystic Kuznya Fanya Yurievich can craft manacles that bind the Nightingale to this realm, allowing it to be permanently killed. yet finding Fanya - and convincing the Nightingale to go quietly - are two very tall tasks.

Fortunately, both lie in the same direction. North along the shores of Volga river. Lots of small towns, and factions of warlords, dot the area. Finding the mystic smith is a matter of stopping in each location along the way and asking around - hopefully to friendly locals. Hopefully.

The Romani are generous, offering food and supplies for the journey as well as some rudimentary maps of their travelling routes. These routes allow for avoiding some of the more deranged Warlords and most dangerous demon infested areas. Of course, the expectation is the group will return to Marta with the rings for her help to return to North America. So, it's more of an investment than a gift on behalf of the Romani.

The trip promised to be dangerous and Par was convinced he would be helpful this time. Doing his best to keep his head on his shoulders he Par was a diligent lookout, not only looking with his eyes, but using his arcane senses to likewise aid him in his efforts. Periodically scanning the countryside for risks his eyes may have missed with his arcane senses, and asking the local spirits for knowledge of dangers unheard.

The Journey - Driving Success
d1d8!!-3
dd1d6!!-3
Once all are loaded into the Novyet Bear, (a much cozier fit now that the whole crew is loaded in) Palach sets off on the road ahead. Having paid only minimal attention to the maps, assuming he would have navigators actively comparing the map to the path, he glances frequently to his side for guidance from the co-pilot. After a particularly late instruction to turn that nearly caused them to land in a ditch, he offers some "harsh" criticism. "Is maybe better to say 'turn' sooner, da? I am good driver, but is dangerous road. More warning helps."

EDIT: Forgot to add in +2 from Woodsman edge, for a total of -1 to the roll, not -3.
Makenna takes charge of the map and helps guide the vehicle on the right path. When @Palach chides her for not giving directions fast enough, she winces. "Sorry, I got distracted for a second. I'm still getting used to these optic implants." For the rest of the journey, she focuses on making sure he knows well in advance when the next turn is going to be.

Looks over the maps for a while before they set out, making note of likely choke points and rougher terrain. Looking at the shape of the Volga river he identifies where the ruins of Stalingrad will be. The idea of adding a king's sword to his collection...

He looks unenthusiastically at the crowded cab and climbs up behind it, activating his heating circuits to keep himself cosy warm. Securing himself well in a nest of supplies and boxes of railgun rounds, he settles in to clean his weapons whilst his 360 senses supplement Par's more esoteric viewing.

Steelbrock's help was enough to get Par on track. The little things he would have missed while meditating or doing other work, improved by the Cyborgs efforts coving those gaps. Having a second person able to perceive in full radius and spectrum was a rare thing but the two of them combined made it work excellently.

Palach recoils slightly, raising his hand defensively. He withdraws his ever so slight rebuke of @Makenna Griggs. "I did not mean insult. Is okay! Is just good not to crash with all my new friends, da? Is okay. I will do better." He tries a reassuring, toothy smile, but it doesn't reach his eyes.

Listens to the bickering subside in the cab and is glad he's outside with the cool kids.

"Thursday, Bryan, how about some airborne overwatch? Don't go too high, though, and draw attention to us. Make sure you scan ahead on of our flanks as well as the route."

He turns to call into the cab, "Maks, keep a sharp eye out for Stalingrad. There's something we need to pick up there."

Heroes of Our Time
  • Following the Volga River northward
  • Horror Factor: 3
  • Conditions: Light Snow.
Image

The Volga River is a life line in the wide open spaces of post-apocalyptic Russia. With no highways, rails, or air transportation, the river is the primary conduit of movement throughout the entire region. As a result, many towns and villages dot its shores and the Warlords patrol it extensively. With such an impressive landmark to orienteer by Makenna helps the group make fantastic time and keeps Palach from avoiding a few potholes along the way. Up ahead Viktor and Radecliffe manage to steer everyone clear of any potential trouble.

At one point time seems to move strangely. It feels as if it is passing by normally, then suddenly, the group finds it to be much later in the day. Par’s mystic senses can feel the slight tingle of mystic energy. Perhaps they passed through something similar to a Fade Zone in North America.

Regardless, it seems they were not the only ones affected as a sudden flash of blue energy rupts in the middle of the river and a capsized cargo vessel appears out of nowhere! It is listing badly and many of its containers have spilled into the icy river. It is eerily quiet with no signs of a crew.

From Discord wrote: So you can do whatever you want...if you want to just grab as much stuff as you can before the ship goes down I'll set up a task for that. You'll be guaranteed some loot

But, if you want to save the ship and all it's cargo (and have it for your journey up river) you can do that but it will be much harder and you might end up with nothing.

Thursday looks around at the giant shiny chunk of mobilized metal. Thursday heard about boats before and read pirate stories, always wanting to know what it's like to go into the open seas (ignoring the fact that he can fly) with his own crew. He never thought he'd see a large boat like this before - however, it is also surrounded by many smaller boxes of shinies. It's obvious he wants the boat, but he's unsure how to even fix it or - to begin with, what exactly is wrong with it.

"Not only could it be part of my hoard, but I could also use it to store more of my hoard! It's like killing two stones with one bird."

Palach regards the sudden appearance of a sinking ship with no visible concern, though he does voice interest. "The Bear is good ride. It will get us there. A boat will get us there faster. Maybe we try to fix? Is room for us, Bear, and more on the boat." He slows the vehicle when @Thursday expresses even more interest. "Is not bad thing to have, da?"

Listening for whatever direction they have before sealing up the armor and heading out. Par is as excited as can be as he begins exploring the vessel and looking for damage he can figure out how to help with.

Ghost Ship
Bryan's flyby reveals the ship is sinking but the team may have the opportunity to salvage her if they act fast. After some discussion about the risk versus reward the heroes decide getting up the Volga River in a ship is a much easier prospect than overland travel, and the full cargo may be of some value in their endeavours. Using their various abilities from jet packs to buoyant bodies the heroes traverse to the deck of the sinking ship. The first priority seems to be to stop her from taking on water.

Locating the hole below the waterline is no problem. Patching it quickly is another issue complete.

A Three Round Dramatic Task...

Round 1: Patch the Leak. 1 success per player using Repair, Boating, or Athletics. Remember Clubs are a complication and rolled at -2, failure on a Club fails the entire task. Failing the round means the boat continues to sink, making subsequent rounds harder.

Makenna takes a quick look around the ship for any usable supplies that could help patch the hole. It's a bit difficult to work with, given that she occasionally has to stick her hand in ice cold water to attach a scrap piece in place, but with the help of her teammates, she thinks she manages to do well enough.

Bryan lands carefully on the slick deck of the ship. He thanks the Northern Star that he was born in the great nation of Canada, and therefore has a lot of experience keeping his footing on icy surfaces. A wrench falls from someone's shivering hand and Bryan snags it nimbly, returning it to the person that knows how to use it as he keeps a watch for anyone else that might not be as experienced with the arctic climate. Re: Chapter 6: Heroes of Our Time

Thursday goes looking all over for scraps and sturdy materials to use for plugging holes - diving under water and flying about until he finds some decent material he can try to bend and shape as needed - taking notes from Steelbrok. He manages to find some sturdy metal chunks that were probably once a part of the ship before it's unfortunate incident.

Thursday grabs them and uses his dragon strength to force the metal together like merging different pieces of play-dough. He makes it seem almost too easy - but then you remember that he is a dragon.

Radecliffe stands apart from the others as they race around attempting to salvage this vessel they call a ship. He is at something of a loss as he's never seen or even heard of such a thing. He's spent little time around other humans and none at all anywhere such a thing might be used.

He considers the situation cautiously even wide eyed at the ongoing activity and makes a decision to let the others know he does not want to complicate matters by accidently undoing any of their hard work. He stands ready to pitch in if something more in line with his skills is needed.

Hope Floats

8 success tokens!

Working quickly in the icy cold waters of the Volga the group manages to fashion a patch. Some hold it into place with strength or assist by passing tools or other supplies while Palach and Steelbrok hammer and wield the patch into place. It isn't pretty, but nothing in this barren land has been pretty so far...well maybe a few of those Romani were good looking.

With the ship no longer taking on water there still remains the problem of righting the ballast by pumping out the water below decks.

Round 2: Right the Ship. 1 success per player using Repair, Electronics, Boating, Arcane Skill or Athletics. Remember Clubs are a complication and rolled at -2, failure on a Club fails the entire task. Failing the round means the boat continues to sink, making subsequent rounds harder.

Viktor not knowing much about boats or repairing them sees what Thursday is doing and tries to help ripping off a metal panel that looked entirely useless. "Problem! Panel here may have prevented the cabin from filling with water! Why no one tell me dis?" In a quick surge of adrenaline he kicks in and reseals the panel before too much water is able to fill into the boat. "Perhaps it is best Viktor stop touching boat parts. Da? Palach remarks with pride at their patch. "Is good work with bits and parts, da?" He then takes note of the terrible listing of the barely water-worthy craft. "Maybe we level it out next?" He finds the bridge of the vessel, hoping to make some sense of their new acquisition. "I can maybe learn..." He trails off as he reads the panels and controls around the room. What looks to the others like Palach simply staring into space is, internally, a rapid-update system sorting out the controls of the hulk. A few minutes pass as he stands motionless, only his eyes flitting back and forth from buttons and dials and switches. Finally, he moves swiftly to the correct panel to find and

Thursday sees everyone doing a bunch of weird fancy stuff. The robot is... charging(?) himself, Palach is flipping switches (seems like a fun job to Thursday) and Thursday has a lack of understanding of what he could do to help, then realizes that he has a relatively large maw - at least, larger than all the tiny humanoids he's with. He starts grabbing mouthfuls of water and throws it out of the ship. An interesting idea and quite funny to look at, but you realize this is probably a better idea than letting him play with the electronics. It isn't the most efficient, but it works.

Psionics Die 1d10
Wild Die 1d6

Striding to the edge of the riverbank he kneels down and plunges his hands into the icy water heedless of the cold. Summoning all of his energy he concentrates on the water in the ship. "Hear me Mother Gaia! Spirits of the river heed me! Leave this creation of Man and return to the freedom of the river!"

He maintains his position, shifting his focus from one part of the ship to the next to coordinate efforts with his companions. Focusing all of his mental energies he does his best to keep the water at bay as each patch is applied and sealed then forcing as much water as he can from the ship once a patch is complete. Eventually, drained from the exertion Radcliffe slumps back and warms his blue tinged hands as he watches the ship repairs complete.

All Wet

Getting water from the ship process to be a challenge. Eventually the heroes get various holes patched and water bailed to slow the sinking but the damage is a little more than their original estimates.

It's going to take a herculean effort to salvage this barge.

Dealer's Choice
I can spot you 2 successes for this round to represent those who do not post, but impose a -2 penalty for the last round to get 8 tokens

Or you can take 6 success for this round (14 total) and try to get the 10 you need in the last round with no penalty.

Palach is satisfied with the functioning of the controls from the bridge, but there are still obstructions in the engine room. Expressionless and simply "to-the-job" he makes his way to the belly of the ship, at times wading through some of the water that @Thursday has not yet spat overboard. With his acetylene torch out of fuel and on the fritz, he has nothing to use to cut the blockage from the bilge pump valve...or does he? With a silent "ssssssshk", his vambraces slide from their housing. Cutting swift and firm, but with incredible precision, he

Having got the pumps working, Steelbrok heads for the bridge. If he can bring the navigation system online then they can align the ship properly with the current and ease the pressure on the hull. He

Amazed at the size of the ship, Par thinks he could have fun for days just exploring the vessel and getting to know it during the travels to come.

Then realizing that @steelbrok was not actually proposing they go out murdering and raiding people. "Um, I am sorry I mean. Yeah, pirates would be cool." A Pirate's Life For Me

After some fast work the crew is able to right the sinking ship and patch it up enough to keep it afloat. It doesn't take long to determine the ship is in otherwise good condition. Although there is no sign of the crew, no even bodies. A search of the ship reveals that the some of the cargo is water damaged, but has various parts and pieces that would be good for trade and salvage (40,000 credits in salvage materials. You can just keep this as goods or "spend it" on Gear you'd like to have and call it salvaged). Fortunately, the main shipment appears to be in tact - two containers full of high tech agricultural equipment (approx 70,000 in trade value, more in the right circumstances).

Perhaps more valuable than what's on board are the navigational charts and manifest. The charts contains a map of every town and village along the Volga with notations about which warlords are in power/influential. Other scrawl in the manifest shows services available at each place, including known places of repair. A likely spot for a Mystic blacksmith to be found. Finally, the manifest shows the destination of the agricultural goods, Kazan, which also has a repair spot and sits at a branch point of the river. It seems like as good a port of call as any others.

The notation for the local warlord is Warlord Burgasov.

Starting to feel a little uneasy at the strange nature of the abandoned ship, Par reached within himself and draw on his arcane awareness, opening himself to the cosmos around him.

Then moving around the ship he searches for perhaps the spirits of the missing crew. But searching around the ship and finding nothing Par begins feeling more at ease and returns to the others. "So do we need to find quarters or bed together? Anyone want to guess what happened to the crew?"

"I'm on a boat! It's also not sinking which is very beneficial. Most boats I have dealt with in the past sank. Not usually my fault. Maybe below deck somewhere there is a nice bottle of Vodka, you know, to celebrate our boat repairing skills and me not putting more holes in it." Viktor searches the boat for alcohol.

Assuming the "Official Ship's Dragon" is a higher rank than Captain - along with a whole deck to accompany it, he pridefully accepts the shiny object. Thursday swiftly nabs the shiny plaque from Steelbrok and begins claiming The Dragon Deck by establishing a location for his mini-hoard.

Palach fiddles with the ship's systems, hoping to find a schematic or a cargo bay door that might serve as a docking point for the Bear. "Is cargo ship, da? It maybe have a place to drive Bear in. Don't want to use crane if crane can't handle weight."

Actually I''ve seen this in RL. Back in the 90s Russian and Ukrainian crews coming into Sunderland docks used to go looking for Skodas and (especially) Ladas and pay a premium rate for them. They carried them back to the FSU as deck cargo and sold them for parts

Makenna takes a look around the ship, looking for a cargo door or a crane to bring the Bear with them. She finds the crane controls, and, to her delight, they seem to be working. She's not really sure how much the crane can hold, so she calls Thursday and Steelbrok over to help lift the vehicle onto the deck.

Radecliffe looks around the ship dubiously. "Are we sure this thing will stay on the water and not in it? I've heard of these boats but I've never been near enough a body of water that could handle anything like this"

He shrugs and motions to Fang as they go looking for anything that might still be edible on this "ship". "They must have had something in the way of supplies on this vessel and if it's stayed cold it may just still be good."

Palach's face wrinkles up as if to dismiss @Radecliffe's concern. "Is a good boat. We did good work fixing holes. It will get us to next port. We do more fixing there, maybe, if we need. If it sink..." Palach shrugs. "Bear has air." He smiles that same smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes, doing his best to reassure the newcomer and his wolf.

With the immediate need to stabilise the ship over (and the dragon staying out of trouble ... for now), Steebrok takes another look around the bridge, making sure to sweep through the skipper's small office too.

He's hoping to find the ship's log, charts, cargo manifest. Where were the crew going? Where did they come from? What happened to them?
He shakes his head for a moment, he must remember to pray for them later.
In the meantime though, there is a serious matter to consider. What to name the ship!

Pirates of Kazan
  • City of Kazan
  • Horror Factor: 2
  • Conditions: Overcast.
Aboard Ship
It doesn’t take long to get the ship, the Askold according to her register, running and use the ancient cargo crane to bring the Bear onto the deck. Forging upriver the group veers to the west at the fork and can soon see the city of Kazan on the horizon. The old city is still a ruin, but a new, somewhat haphazard settlement has cropped up along the river bank with docks and berths of all sizes. The city is something of an industrial and trade hub between the Burgasov, Orloff, and Sovetski factions of Russia.

It doesn’t take long for a slew of river patrol boats to buzz around the ship. A man in a fur hat stands on the deck of a patrol boat yelling into a mega-phone. Eventually the group figures out he is calling out a radio channel and tunes in.

”Attention, Askold. You are months overdue. Caught in the slow time again eh Vasilley?”

It seems the patrol leader thinks the 1st SET are the previous crew. Wait’ll they see the dragon.

Outside Kazan
Alexander follows his master, Slava Fetisov, as they head from the countryside to the city of Kazan. Slava is old, perhaps ancient, and a master kuznya who travels from town to town helping people with mundane and magic repairs alike. It’s perplexing that he has chosen to come to the city at this time, normally avoiding them - and the warlords - like the plague.

After a long silence the old smith looks to his apprentice, ”There is something we must do here. Go into town and figure it out. I will wait here.” And with that he abruptly sets down his pack and begins to make a small camp.

Heading into the city Alexander sees a commotion as a crowd begins to gather at the docks. A new ship coming into view on the horizon.

As they approach the new city Par pays close attention. It is amazing how people seem to be able to thrive in a land that only produces crops a few months out of the year.

Scrunching his face as much as it could Par thinks to himself, This could be bad if they take it the wrong way that we found a ship and they liked the previous crew members. I better try and smooth things over.

Not really being a person with much restraint he does not wait for the others opinion of what to say before replying anyways. "Ahoy!"

"Sorry, but we are not the old crew of the ship. We salvaged this ship as it was sinking about 30 miles south of here. The crew had abandoned it and left no sign of where they went." Then realizing the people bellow would likely not speak American, he stopped and allowed his mind to empty, thinking of the way people spoke in these parts, of the previous lessons with the Romany, and the other clues from before.
p1d0!!Ld1d6!!
pFLdd1d10!!L.

Speaks Russian d6 "The speaker can carry on a prolonged but occasionally halting conversation."

Repeating the previous words in a rough Russian, with a distinct American accent he said. "Ahoy!"

"Sorry, but we are not the old crew of the ship. We salvaged this ship as it was sinking about 30 miles south of here. The crew had abandoned it and left no sign of where they went."

Palach's head spins to give @Par a blank look. "Comrade, that was not best idea. Is bad to be on stolen boat in place that knows it." Unfortunately, any statements to the contrary at this point are unlikely to undo what was done. He begins a visual examination of the boat, hoping to find signs of their reaction. "Maybe we think of plan if they don't like what they heard." His hand moves idly to the Equalizer on his hip. He pulls the pistol ever so slightly from the holster, then replaces it and returns to steering the ship.

There is something we must do here. Go into town and figure it out. I will wait here.
Alexander stands there momentarily as his master sets up the camp. I wonder what this is about, we don't normally visit the bigger towns With no further indication that his master is going to give him additional information, Alexander looks at his master and acknowledges the command. "Yes Master, I will find out what is compelling about this town" With that, he heads into the town.

While heading into the town, Alexander is mulling over why they stopped there. Do we need supplies? No, We hunt what we need, although some booze every now and again wouldn't be a bad thing. Do we need materials? No, we have been finding relics that we are able to harvest our materials from. Is he feeling lonely and need companionship? Hell, he wouldn't send me in to figure that out, that is just plain rude. Although I wouldn't mind some time with a woman myself. Ugh, he hasn't been in a good mood lately, so that's probably not it. Man, Some information would have been nice. That competition was the easy part. As he gets closer to the town, travelers part a path and stare in awe as he walks through them. The guards, curious as to the commotion, stand to attention when they see him. Alexander nods to them as he walks in. And this is another reason why master avoids these towns like the plague.

Walking through town, nothing is particularly catching his eye as to why he's here. When he arrives at the dock, Alexander sees the crowd and is curious as to why a boat showing up would draw such a crowd.
1d6! Ld1d6!
Is that a dragon? Well, that could be dangerous Alexander moves through the crowd towards the dock where the ship is going to defend the town if the Dragon ends up attacking it. I wonder how the master knew this was happening? I'll have to ask him when I return, right now, This town will need to be defended. If that dragon stays in the air, I might have a hard time. Standing on the dock, if not probably pretty close to the tallest person there, stands Alexander with his golden sledge hammer out and ready.

Steelbrok strides along the deck, a string bag laden with the bottles of beer and vodka (filched from the Captain's cabin) help out in one fist. He slaps Thursday on the rump to get the beast to move to one side, thereby displaying that the dragon is neither uncontrolled nor especially fearsome.

Once he reaches the pointy bit at the front he puts one foot up on a bollard and gives a friendly wave.

"Hello, tovarsIches, piva, vodka" an excellent start, he thinks as he gestures to the bottles, before continuing in the very best

Seeing the Cyborg spank the dragon was somewhat a surprise. Does the dragon tolerate this behavior because the cyborg can't be eaten? Or is this party so powerful that they have subjected a dragon? With the Cyborg makes his appeal to the townsfolks. The townsfolk appears to be more at
ease, If they truly are good, then that is a good thing and there won't be unnecessary loss of life. If however, the cyborg is deceiving us, I fear there will be little to no time to get my master for help.
Alexander contiplates sending a messenger for the help or not, with time running out before the boat docks.

Palach decides he likes @Makenna Griggs' approach, and does his best to translate into Russian through whatever loudspeaker or radio might be functional and nearby. He manages to (intentionally) modify some parts. "We have salvaged this vessel as it was abandoned and sinking. We are willing to return it if ownership is established, or accept it by right of salvage if the owners vanished with the crew. What are your orders?"
He turns back to the rest of the crew. "I translated best I could. Hope they don't shoot. River will be cold."

Radecliffe's dismay only gets worse when the metal man @Steelbrok starts trying to have a drinking conversation with someone he can't even understand. Oh this is so not going to end well is the thought that runs through Radecliffe's mind over and over as he watches the scene unfold.

Fading into the shadows Radecliffe and calling Fang to him he finds a vantage point that allows him to observe what is going on and provide support or cover as needed. These people really need to learn some caution if we are going to succeed in this mission of their to catch this thief of theirs.

Finally someone who speaks the language Alexander looks up at the person with the bullhorn.

Par watches the conversations happening and the crowd forming as something in the back of his head starts to make him think. The looking around at the rest of the ground he begins wondering, what I am missing.

Completely distracted form the conversation, and yet at the same time trying to remember the previous exchanges, he unfocuses his mind, letting it show him what he needs to know.

What a Ship Show
  • City of Kazan
  • Horror Factor: 2
  • Conditions: Overcast.
As the patrol boat approaches, Par takes the lead on translation with a beautiful honest statement.
”Par” wrote: "Sorry, but we are not the old crew of the ship. We salvaged this ship as it was sinking about 30 miles south of here. The crew had abandoned it and left no sign of where they went."
There is a long pause before a response comes. The crew of the patrol boat is likely conversing in much the same way as the heroes.
”Palach wrote:"Comrade, that was not best idea. Is bad to be on stolen boat in place that knows it."
As he goes for his gun Radecliffe sinks into the shadows ready for trouble.
”Radecliffe” wrote:"Palach has the right of it. I don't think this is a very good idea. We should have left the boat to these people and let them the mystery of the missing crew."
Before too long Thursday ambles onto the deck and much cursing and shouting can be heard over the radio. The gunner on the patrol boat swings his railgun to bear just as Steelbrok clanks into view.
”Steelbrok” wrote:Hello, tovarsIches, piva, vodka" an excellent start, he thinks as he gestures to the bottles, before continuing in the very best style, "WE FRIENDS, WE RESCUE SHIP, WE GOOD GUYS"
Everyone is momentarily perplexed as beer and vodka rains down toward the smaller craft. Tensions remain high. On shore a crowd has formed but one man appears at the front. Everyone pays him some deference and he takes up the conversation. He begins speaking through the man on the patrol boat.
”Aexander Petrov” wrote:You don't look like one of the Warbands. Who are you and do you vouch for this dragon? Are you the Leader of this group?)
A few moments of confusionn occur as Steelbrok and Alexander talk past each other in different languages. Finally, Makenna speaks up and Palach takes on the role of translator.
”Makenna” wrote:Yes, we found this vessel in disarray and thought that we should return it to its rightful owners. We're also seeking information and supplies. Perhaps we can trade?"
”Palach” wrote:"I translated best I could. Hope they don't shoot. River will be cold."
Alexander’s presence and the offer to return the vessel seems to calm everyone a little, but tensions still run high. The man on the deck of the patrol boat reclaims his megaphone from Alexander, fumbling with the headset of a universal language translator. He begins to speak and the translator spits out words.

”You will return the ship and tell us the fate of the crew. Your pet may not enter the city.” Then he looks sideways at Alexander, ”The Kuznya’s apprentice will escort you outside the limits of the city. You may encamp there, some in only to trade, and move on.”

Palach turns to the members of the 1st SET. "Listen. Is a good boat. We stop it from sinking, float it this far. If the owner is dead or gone, they don't own it. Town doesn't own it. Let me act like translator. Someone say words like 'this is our boat if there is no owner'. Let me make it sound right to them. Da?" He spins at the wheel trying to get the ship to dock properly. "Maybe the mystic will help solve the problem?" He prepares to disembark to meet @Aexander Petrov.

Palach grins at @Bryan. "Is good point."
He addresses the dock authority in Russian, still by loudspeaker. "My superior officer wishes me to tell you that the dragon is not a pet. The dragon is our companion. He is young and will not understand why we have saved this ship from sinking only to give it back to people who have no claim of ownership. If the owner is not dead, let them present themselves and proof of ownership. If the owner is not alive and no valid deed is presented, then I invite you to explain to the dragon that his ship is forfeit to you. I have not found good occasion to disagree with the dragon, and he is my friend. Maybe you will have better luck." He shrugs. "Maybe they have guns big enough to hurt him. Do they have men bold enough to shoot?"
As @Aexander Petrov and @Thursday have their moment, Palach raises his hands in deference. In Russian, Palach addresses the mystic's apprentice. "Friend, you may be able to best him in combat. I do not want to find out if you can, and you do not want to find out if you cannot. We are not here for violence. If we were, we would not be talking, and you would be learning the limits of your abilities, for better or worse. We are only making our way down river. The boat is the best way to do that. Can your master see reason and persuade the town to let us keep what we repaired?"

Palach shrugs. "Maybe you can ask for a friendly match once we are all friends." He smiles that smile that doesn't reach his eyes. "Me, I am from Russia. They are not. They had some confusion with local authorities. I was traveling with some Romani when we came across each other. The local authorities began pointing guns, they pointed back, and I chose them because I prefer not to be a slave. They are from America. And that is where I want to go."
He listens to @steelbrok's not so veiled threat and translates into Russian. "He said he is happy to make a new friend, but asks that we be conscientious to treat the dragon how we would like the dragon to treat us. You understand, I am sure." The same blank smile crosses his face as he hopes, very sincerely, that Alexander doesn't speak even a little bit of American.

Alexander listens to the group translator. "Zemlya Amerikanskoy Imperii? Mozhete li vy im doveryat'? Oni skazali, chto prodadut svoy narod za yedu. Pochemu vy khotite tuda poyekhat'? Why do you want to go there? Isn't it full of Aliens and a kingdoms run by demons?")

Listening to the message from the cyborg, Alexander sees the effort the translator is putting in to keep the peace and sizes up the odd. Two Kuznya, one dragon no matter how large or small, one cyborg and quite a few people. We are good, not that good. "You are a good diplomat. Do not worry my friend, while I may not understand your cyborg friend, right now, it would not be wise for me to fight all of you."[Alexander will defer to his fellow Russian.

I mean, I do not need it, but what would make it theirs more than ours. We fixed and and kept it from sinking." The teenagers words more a statement that a question he considers. "Maybe they can buy it from us. This thing must be worth enough food and supplies to eat and travel for a year, even out here."

A wet Fang makes straight for the fire and flops down next to it while Radecliffe drops his pack next to the nearest empty seat and sits down. Radecliffe shrugs, "The ship is a giant target. Personally I'll be glad to get rid of it. But if you really want to stay on the river maybe a compromise is in order. Perhaps they'll trade for a smaller, faster vessel? I'm just hoping the thief you're hunting doesn't have any agents in this town. I don't think you could've made a bigger entrance if you tried."

Looking to the dragon Radecliffe smiles, "You are an awesome creature, my friend. Do not let the petty posturing of bullies and fools upset you. In my experience you learn that you fight to live and you fight to eat. Don't waste your energy on such idle threats."

Radecliffe leans back in his chair and pulls his cowl further about his head leaving his face in shadow. These new Russians may be friend or foe. Radecliffe thought to himself. It's too soon to tell. We'll find out soon enough I guess. Watch, listen and learn.
