ME: Hi team. This being our, out of character area chat (OOC) I thought I would say hello here on site. I have talked to a few of you on Hangouts. Sometimes all the aliases and character names etc get confusing. On Hangouts I think I show up as Dan (my real name). Here on site with the 1st SET I am Damien. I also pop around here doing things as Lars. I have played Rifts since it came out in the 90's and really enjoy the game. I have written a few canon things for Palladium Books over the years and was super happy to see Savage Worlds remake the game. Savage rules are... enjoyable. I joined the site in 2016 and have had a blast here, however I disappeared from Savage Rifts for a while due to in real life adventures. My job is often nuts. I have experience playing here, but it's been almost a year since I last did. I am excited to play with all of you, if you need anything please feel free to ask me.

MY CHARACTER: Damien is fairly new to the Tomorrow Legion. During the intake/training to join the Legion, he has, I assume, heard plenty of stories about what the different Legion teams have been up to. Things like: Oh! Did you hear, the 32nd SET once had an undead cowboy on its team until he became possessed. Once a Mercenary Company was camped out front of the castle and tried to destroy the Legion, but it was a Coalition plot. I heard the bar out front of the castle has been blown up 22 times and had 66 bartenders. When Damien and the others are assigned to the 1st SET many heroic stories are told about the past events of the 1st SET. Stories of their leader Cory who was an amazing Mystic who led the SET into battle against impossible odds so many times its hard to believe. Even defeating a undead Juicer who once led the 1st SET who returned from the dead to try to destroy the Legion's way of life. Upon assignment to the 1st SET Damien is ecstatic to have the chance to carry on the 1st SET tradition of exploring North America and helping those in need, while destroying evil in all its forms. Who could have guessed we would end up so far from home! I am interested to see how our team dynamics plays out.

Basically: Damien Frost: Momano Headhunter... think psychic, almost Mind Melter, powers and with technowizard bioncs.

So here's to a great game with you all and thank you John (VV) for running it as our GM!!

Thanks Dan, this is great. How about everyone else give a little introduction of yourself and your character (real names aren't necessary if you prefer).

I'll throw and extra benny at everyone who completes an introduction.

Hi everyone, I'm Kim on Hangouts. This is my first time on this forum, so bear with me as I figure everything out. I got started with roleplaying in my early teens over Yahoo Instant Messenger with a friend of mine. There were no dice, just us each making a character and writing stories together. When I was first introduced to the concept of roleplaying with dice, I remember thinking that it was a dumb idea. It seemed too complicated, and very unfair for one person to be the leader of the story instead of everyone having equal say in what happened. Obviously, I've changed my mind since then, and I'm glad I did!

I started with D&D, as I'm sure many people have. In fact, I still play with an online group every other week. I was introduced to Rifts more recently by a friend of mine. So far, Rifts is the only Savage setting I've played, and this is going to be the second character I've ever played. I'm looking forward to getting more experience with the rules and the setting.

As for my character, Makenna: she joined the Tomorrow Legion a bit reluctantly. She's lived her life as a scavenger, traveling and fending for herself. However, she participated in the Juicer Uprising and lost a lot of her Juicer friends as a result, so she has a bone to pick with the Coalition now. Even so, staying in one place for too long makes her a bit antsy, so any missions she can get assigned to, she takes. Even though she spent most of her time in the wilderness, she still had to come into town to sell any valuables she was able to find, so she's pretty friendly. She doesn't have any notable missions under her belt just yet, just a few boring scouting missions and the like. Hopefully this mission with the 1st SET will be more exciting, and bring with it some nice treasure!

Thank you, VV, for letting me join! I'm looking forward to it!

ME: Hey, friends! I'm also new to this site but also still learning about the game. I've played it a little bit with a premade character and it was pretty fun, but I thought it'd be better if I had created my own character. My first RPG was D&D 5e in 2014 to 2015-ish. I've been playing a bunch of RPGs since. My name is Zakk but I'm often nicknamed Kaz - in the Google Hangouts I show up as Z. I don't really have much else to say about me other than I like to meet new people and make friends.

THURSDAY: My character, Thursday, is around 2 weeks old. He got his name based on the day he was discovered and hatched - he claims that he "owns" Thursdays as if you could own a day like one could own land. He is a Royal Frilled Dragon who was in the Rifts and got thrown out only hours after he hatched. He managed his way into 1st SET by following a group of Legion scouts and saving one from a bear attack - he mostly just wanted to know how a bear tasted - and after he killed it, he healed the scout as he was in a good mood. They took him back to base and decided that he may be useful to them. In turn for his protection and entertainment given by the Legion, he does work for them. Thursday is often a very curious dragon as he's still developing morals, ethics, and knowledge of the world. His dragon-sitters usually try to give him something to entertain himself so he doesn't make a mess of the base by exploring it. He refers to friends as his property and "mine" as he is still grasping the idea of what friends are.

Congratulations! You are the currently assigned dragon-sitters. Good luck!

Thanks for letting me join and try out more of Savage Rifts! I can't wait to see what adventures we go on!

ME: Hello, I'm Paul. This will be my first play by post. I've done a bit of Savage Worlds gaming over the years and read but not managed to play Savage Rifts yet though I did write up a fair bit of material for my own version of Rifts Britain.
I've been DMing a Star Trek/Wars/Firefly mashup for a year or so and we did our first online session last week. Looking forward to being this side of the virtual table and exploring a new to me area of Rifts Earth

Steelbrok: This fairly new cyborg is on a rapid learning curve about this new Earth. The penny hasn't really dropped yet that he's moved in time.. It seems like only a few days or maybe a couple of weeks ago that someone let off a nuke in South America and the world went into one mad crisis after another. Strange beings with impossible powers seemed to appear from nowhere. Being transported somewhere else? Almost normal by now. Funny, though, these people speak English very strangely - even more strangely than the Americans he'd ran into over the years.
And an upright talking dog? Strange times

Me:
My name is Scott, handle on hangouts is Trilan. I played original Rifts for several years, up until around the time Wormwood came out, though really only two charcters, my first one was my Glitter Boy I remade for this game and the second was a Ramen Hardware Specialist. I've run Savage Worlds since the first version, though I've not switched over to SWADE as of yet or gotten to run or play either Savage Rifts release.

Don:
Don is a french canadian nerd, he's okay in a fight but much more at home fixing things up between battles. He is something of an idealist and a little too happy to help others to his own detriment. He broke with his nations military during the war following the Tolkeen forces unleashing demons on the Coalition troops. Eventually he stumbled across some scouts out of Castle Refuge while he was trying to help some displaced families get out of the war zone, and has been working with the Tomorrow Legion since.

Me:
Hey folks, I'm Lars, I've been playing on EU for years. I first got involved back when I had an overnight job that tended to be pretty slow. Stuck around for years after. I recently came back after a two year hiatus or so after having some significant RL issues (Medical problems, roomies stealing thousands of dollars of my stuff etc). I haven't had much experience with Savage so I suspect it'll be a bit of a learning process for me. That said I've played on all kinds of systems and games from D&D 2.0 through to current edition, Shadowrun 3E onward, Heavy Gear, D20 and a host of other things.

Kesslan:
Kesslan is a third or fourth generation dogboy 'freebirth' who recently discovered his burster psi powers. Beyond that he's intended to be a fairly happy, if sometimes grumbly character. At the moment he has no solid specialties though the idea is to eventually develop him further into psi powers and a mix of ranged and melee combat. He was rescued by a member of the Tomorrow Legion while on the run from the CS and has been with the Legion since (Though that's not been a very long time).

Steelbrok sat on his own for a few minutes. Trying to collect his thoughts about his new companions

Hang on, that can't really be a dragon? A dragon! But the others all seem so blase about it, maybe i dropped into some weird parallel world or something?

Seeing the USA G10 Armour suit was reassuring. Why the Americans wanted something so shiny and easy to see on the battlefield had always been a mystery to him but at least it was familiar. Why, turns out the trooper inside is Canadian. Mind, his French is as strange as the English the others speak

Nearly made a fool of myself. I thought the mutant dog had caught fire and was going to roll him on the snow! Turns out to be some psychic flame power!

And that "Monamona" (or whatever it was) cyborg. Not at all like all the cyborgs he'd seen before. Was he really powering his implants psychically?

Another one said she was a Quick Flex whatever that was. Another mutant type? That story about her ancestors being from another world, I'd say it was far fetched but I'm looking at a dragon. Maybe one of the other powers had stashed them away or bred them. Pretty good wilderness skills though

Then there's a guy who's part borg. Calls himself a Headhunter. Hasn't said much yet.

Lastly there's a what? Magician? Is magic real here? I mean psychics yes, met a few back in Blighty, but full on magic? Goes with the dragon I suppose. Used to play a bit of D&D before the 63rd edition came out and ruined everything. Looks like I'm in a flaming D&D game with guns.

He took today's swig of rum, wondering how long his supplies would last.

Hello everyone,
My name is Rob Towell, you will see me on various boards (including this one) as @Ndreare. I have been gaming for about 32 years or so since my brother Boyce introduced me to D&D 1st edition. I play a variety of games and Gaming is one of my favorite hobbies.

I was introduced to Rifts when it was the only book out for the game in my area back in April 1991 or 92 when my Mother bought the book and presented it to me for my 13/14th birthday. Fell in love with the world and it has remained one of my favorites ever since.

I have been online here at Savage Rifts for about 3 years by account created back in Jan 2017, I lurked for a few months before making Kidemonas. I tend to post a lot on Friday, Monday and Tuesday and rarely on other days. But you will see me in hang outs all the time chiming in after only reading half the conversation.

My character will be "Par" which is short for Partum Artifex. He is a young man living in the body of 5' tall wooden sculpture. His specialty for the group will be illusion. I expect to be spamming it as much as I can. It looks like we do not have a line walker or a shifter, so he may be filling the role of Master of Magic until one joins. But his spell variety is not really robust enough to perform the role long term.

Par's background is as follows...

Background
Like most men of earth Par was born to a rough world. His mother and father had a strained relationship, their love ill fitting as their passions conflicted. Par’s father Julious was a shifter and traveler. So it was when Par contracted a disease at the age of 6 that ravaged his body and was killing him, that his parents had the combined skills needed to save his life. Though his body perished, his parents where able to construct a body for him made of wood. While sculpted to look like a healthy human, and even apparently growing as he aged, his appearance was still such that aging as he grew. When trouble came to Tolkien the Artifex family fled, long before the war escalated Julious had the experience and know how to foresee what was coming and used his power to travel south. Annibels awareness as a mystic allowing her to predict the future significance of Refuge led them there and they began building relationships with the dwarves there.

Once the family settled around refuge it was only a short year later that the Tomorrow Legion was formed and from there Julious quickly volunteered to work with a SET. His time bound to home and hearth making him feel restrained. So it was during the last two years Julious would spend weeks on the road at a time. Return home in time to see his family for a little while and be off again, his obsession with seeing all he could see completely refused to yield to the needs of hearth and home. Annibel’s was likewise led to help people and her passion passion was for the earth itself to protect and encourage the natural life that belonged to this world.

Par would help his mother as she fulfilled her duties around Refuge. Working as a physician she was able to use her arcane talents to great effect. Most of Par’s responsibilities would be protecting his mother while she was out of town and learning to work as her assistant. But his heart's desire was to follow in his father's steps. To join as a SET member and travel around to see the world.

Many years spent studying the arcane arts, Par is now old enough to be respected as an adult and is ready to move on. Taking advantage of the arcane arts he learned from his father and the natural mystic talents he inherited from his mother Par is ready to leave. And who knows, perhaps as he leaves on this first mission he holds hope that his father will be pleased with his experiences and growth.

Great intros: still time to get one up. It's worth a benny!

Next up, I'd love a wish list for your hero...

1) What item/gear/equipment would you really like to acquire?

2) What's one thing you ant to see happen to your hero this quarter (deal with a backstory issue, test a particular skill, etc.)?

I'll give a benny for completing this too!

1) I'd really like to acquire some cybernetics. Although, I don't know if anyone will be available to install them in this harsh landscape we suddenly find ourselves in...

2) Makenna has a history involving Juicers, which is probably where she managed to get her Juicer JA-11. It could be interesting to have something happen involving either meeting a Juicer, or something happening with her gun.

1. "People can play inside of giant robots?! That's unfair! I wish I had a giant robot to play with - if only they made them in dragon-size... or. I. could. just shIFT INTO A TINY HUMAN!!! I'm a genius!" Thursday thinks to himself.

I don't quite know exactly what items could be of use to a dragon unless he goes into human form. If they have things that enhance Psionics or Spellcasting, that would be preferred. "And now, my magic is only more magical!!!"

If none of these, Thursday really just wants subjects, rare objects and a place to store them. He wants property and things to collect, flaunt about, play with and perhaps make deals with.

2. I'm not quite sure. His backstory hadn't had much and him being recently hatched doesn't give him too much room for any major past events. I mostly want to see him grow, imprint on people and learn, but have moments where he struggles thinking of what is acceptable and unacceptable.
He's read old stories and heard tales of dragons that have great treasure hordes and giant buildings or caves that they live in. He's heard that they're evil, but he likes the idea of having lots of toys and subjects to keep him entertained.

"I've heard humans talk about this animal called a 'Pizza.' I don't know what it is, but it sounds like it would be simple to hunt with it being so greasy and easy to smell."

Oddly, I don't really have any specific wishlist for this character. Tech based characters there's always tons of things I can think of, and especially with the setting of Russia there's lots of gear in the Palladium books that could be converted. But for a very psi-dependent character? There really isn't a whole lot I can think of. I think the most useful thing for me right now though would be a suit of EBA

2) What's one thing you want to see happen to your hero this quarter (deal with a backstory issue, test a particular skill, etc.)?
I can't really think of anything in this regard right now either. My current (slightly longer term goal) is to be able to pick up Psi-Mastery so I can unlock the MD versions of my burster's abilities. The rest I just kind of see what happens and roll with it.

For a Bennie more:
1) What item/gear/equipment would you really like to acquire?
Damien also would like to increase his cybernetics. However not only might that be hard to acquire - as a Momano he HAS to have new cybernetic and bionic added surgically and done by his Sect. Otherwise he suffers massive penalties. So. Until Damien gets back to North America he’s not getting more cybernetics. That’s okay because I am happy to advance his Psionics knowledge. Truth be told I’m unsure on item/gear/equipment. Things like a TW cloak or other TW items will be fun to have. I’ve toyed with the idea of getting Beast Bond and Beast Masters Edges. A Siberian Husky as a companion. Maybe rescue it as a pup and care for it and develop a bond.
Right?
Image
2) What's one thing you Want to see happen to your hero this quarter (deal with a backstory issue, test a particular skill, etc.)?
Damien is Driven and Heroic. Destroy evil and hunt true monsters. He has been trained since birth to do so. Great. But. His interactions with non Momano is very limited. Things like people not wanting to do what’s right might baffle him. He desires to be excepted by the Team but will be challenged in knowing how best to get “personal” with them. By that I mean. Friends. I mean the guy is 18. What 18 year old really knows themselves or how to get along with others. I think Thursday will baffle and aggravate Damien AND be the easiest for Damien to really spark a friendship with. Finding out who he is. Because even if he knows (he thinks) who he is. The answer might surprise him.

Storywise, Much like Damien Don is heroic, though his is more bent toward justice and throwing off oppression rather than monster hunting.

First Encounter Shakedown
Okay, having been through a first encounter, especially those of you who are new or new to playing with me as a GM, please provide any feedback, insights, questions, etc. you may have gleaned. This can include something you learned for next time or something I can learn from.

Everyone who gives a response can take a benny.
Meta (Spoilers)
Since some people asked, here are some things about the last encounter that I had some ideas/notes for.

1) The Boom Gun was always going to trigger an avalanche. Seemed thematically appropriate.

2) The demons who occupy this nexus point are toll keepers. "Talking" with them would have consisted in them threatening you to pay some sort of extortion for passing through the nexus point claimed by their lord. A fight may have ensued regardless.

3) The big bear had a cave full of various collected tolls. Another adventure fork would see you trapped in there after an avalanche.

4) Info, which you will eventually discover in another fashion, is that the theif obviously paid the toll or had an arrangement in order to pass through the area so quickly.

Not sure I have any questions or observations other than my own. Using buff spells on multiple allies can be power point taxing!

I thought starting in media res was a great idea and worked well for getting our instant interest.

I also thought starting right in the action was a good move, it certainly got everyone excited and posting rapidly. I know it helped acclimate me more quickly to the site conventions than sitting in a bar :)

Other than that I thought it felt like everyone had a pretty good feel for their characters already.

It's definitely a weird thought for me to roll things "just in case". I'm so used to waiting for the GM to tell me that I need to roll first. Like when I went to shoot the bears for the first time, I didn't add a shooting roll/damage roll at first, because I wasn't even sure if I could see my target. Usually I would ask the GM if it was possible, and THEN I would roll. But with this method, using "if" statements really helped me out. IF I can see the bear, THEN shoot them. It's an interesting change that I'll have to get used to.

On my end jumping right into the action etc wasn't a bad thing, since I need to learn this system. What I learned when this site first went live pretty much all went out the window when I was on my two year or so hiatus from EU, and then throw in the change to SWADE and well... I'm basically at square one with this system again. Beyond that, well, I've always known you as a top tier GM so...keep it up!

I'm in favour of the media in res start too. Got us going straight away and I enjoyed being able to let rip straight away. Having us do the intros in OOC was a good idea too.

I also like that it's set in a part of the Rifts world unfamiliar to me. Gives it a sense of discovery.

A fair comment made about needing to learn the system but I'd make some addenda to that
Savage Rifts is at the high end of Savage Worlds complexity. If I was GMing a campaign at the table and there were people who din't know the system I'd maybe do a one shot/one session adventure with ordinary characters (no Iconic Frameworks) to get people use to the basics before jumping into the extras that come with SR. Now that's not really possible on this forum.
however, one of the reasons I chose a Borg was that I'm new to PbP and knew I would have a learning curve so I decided no Arcane Background. Borg appealed as a lot of the IF's bonuses etc go directly into attributes/stats.

That isn't intended as criticism of anyone, just trying to explain my own thinking. It would be difficult for anyone not as familiar with the system to draw those conclusions. I have been very impressed with the level of help from VV (and others who are experienced on savagerifts.com) for those of us not familiar with this forum

I don't really have much to say, save for I'm also learning a bit as time goes on. Starting in a fight is pretty good as I'm now pretty confident in knowing how to roll dice and a good bit of how the system works. Also, the visuals from Roll20 are also very useful. I'm a bit new to PBP, as my sessions are usually voice calls or in-person, but it's quite convenient since a lot of people may live in different time-zones and have different availability. I decided to pick Dragon because it's a new creature learning about the world and everything - so it's easy to act as a creature that doesn't know anything if you yourself don't know anything... and also because it's a Dragon

It's big brain time

VV wrote:Okay, having been through a first encounter, especially those of you who are new or new to playing with me as a GM, please provide any feedback, insights, questions, etc. you may have gleaned. This can include something you learned for next time or something I can learn from.

Everyone who gives a response can take a benny.
I was skeptical when I joined the First SET (Far From Home) - figured John, "Venatus Vinco" (VV) was a veteran Game Master and well past his prime. The man has been running a game here since 2016. He must be out of ideas by now. Everything has been done by now. What recycled game will he run now.

Okay - seriously, I am kidding!

I think this was the perfect start to this game. Most games here on SavageRifts.com seem to start with a Interlude. Then go on to meet and greet each other - then start down an adventure ... this was a fresh approach. As we continue to play I will provide feedback if I have any that seems relevant to you VV. For now, I, as a guy who has played and GM'd here have no questions and I am super excited to play with our current group of players. I have run Savage Rifts and Deadlands Reloaded for years now, SWADE is new to me as it is others. I am learning the rules as we go too.

I'll say: The original 1st SET was my all time favorite game group, this incarnation of the 1st is shaping up to be a new fav!
