  • Bizzare Physiology: −4 to Healing and cybernetics checks—Juicer and Crazy augmentations don’t work for them—and compatible cybernetics and medical supplies cost double the listed price.

  • Natural Psionics: Vernulians can manipulate held devices telekinetically for no ISP.
  • Non-Standard Build: Subtract 2 from Trait rolls when using equipment not designed for them (including weapons and vehicles). They cannot wear common armor or clothing, it must be custom-designed and fitted—tripling purchase and repair costs.

Background

Theo, a young up and comer, weaves his way through the crowded bar. The banker was at the back. Nervously he pulls back the curtain to a private booth. It takes him a second to shake off the shock. At the table behind the curtain a giant alien snake looks at him with uninterested, but creepy, eyes. Four tentacles are all in motion at once. Two are draped over a pair of scantily clad reptilian d-bees, while one holds an oversized chalice full of some foul smelling drink, and the fourth has a live rat by the tail. Opening his mouth the snake-man drops in the rat.

The snake looks up, smiling as the still squirming rat goes down his gullet. Finally, the snake speaks with a hint of a Spanish accent.

"So you need a loan?" As he speaks a black card mysteriously floats up off the table.

"The boss says the vig is thirty percent. But I can give you twenty five if you cut me in for twenty on your job."

Unable to hide his reaction Theo flounders for words and nods begrudgingly. The boss told him twenty percent and no cut, but he doesn't dare challenge the numbers. He needs this money to make his first big score. The snake has him by the short hairs.

With a hiss the snake floats the card into Theo's hand.

"Remember, thirty days to pay. Or my next meal will be a city rat."

Gulping, Theo nods, grabs the card, and scurries away. The quicker he finishes this job the better.

As the curtain closes the snake starts talking. More to himself than the girls.

"Reduced to extorting the manure from the cattle. How I have fallen."

On the Vernulian home world the elite enjoy decadent lifestyles while the poor are kept in line by the iron might of the military. Crótalo was one of those elite. A successful business man trading in exotic metals from off world locales. He enjoyed the finest of things and the circles of power.

However, one bad move brought it all crashing down. Leveraged to the hilt on a deal to bring a newly discovered material to the military, Crótalo stood to triple his fortunes in one grand stroke. Instead, a band of dimensional raiders made off with his whole shipment, leaving Crótalo with no payday and a huge debt.

Humiliated, Crótalo sold all his possessions to cover his debts and was shunned from high society. Friendless and broke, Crótalo cobbled together what little he had left and smuggled his way off world to a new dimension.

The Vernulian refugees in Mexico were a pitiful bunch of mammal lovers. Staying with them only long enough to fleece them of some wealth Crótalo made his way north hooking up with the Black Market Bandito Arms faction in New Mexico before finally being given a chance to work with his own crew out of MercTown.
