Character Sheet
Halt O’Carrick
Rank: Novice Advances Left: 0
Race: Human

Attributes: Agility d10, Smarts d6, Spirit d8, Strength d6, Vigor d8
Pace: 6; Parry: 5 ; Toughness: 8 (2)
Skills:
  • *Athletics (Agility): d6
  • *Common Knowledge (Smarts): d4
  • Fighting (Agility): d6 (2)
  • Intimidation (Spirit) d8 (1) +2
  • *Notice (Smarts): d8 (1, 1 from rolls)
  • *Persuasion (Spirit): d4
  • Riding (Agility): d6 (1. 1 from rolls)
  • Shooting (Agility) d10 (3)
  • *Stealth (Agility): d10 (1, 1 from rolls) +2
  • Survival (Smarts) d10 (2, 2 from rolls)) +2

Hindrances
  • Mean (Minor - Low Charisma): This curmudgeon is ill-tempered and disagreeable. He has trouble doing anything kind for anyone else, must be paid for his troubles, and doesn’t accept awards or favors graciously. Besides the obvious roleplaying issues, Mean characters subtract 1 from Persuasion rolls.
  • Stubborn (Minor): Stubborn individuals always want their way and never admit they’re wrong. Even when it’s painfully obvious they’ve made a mistake they try to justify it with half-truths and rationalizations.
  • All Thumbs (Minor): Due to upbringing, lack of exposure, or pure bad luck, some individuals are “all thumbs” when it comes to mechanical or technological devices. All Thumbs inflicts a −2 penalty when using mechanical or electrical devices. If he rolls a Critical Failure while using such a device (and it doesn’t already have a built-in effect), it’s broken. If the GM feels it’s appropriate, it can be fixed with a Repair roll and 1d6 hours.
  • Shamed (Major): Something haunts your adventurer. Maybe he made a vow he didn’t keep. Maybe he was defeated in an honorable fight and ordered the death of his foe anyway for some greater principle. Maybe he isn’t actually cowardly but once ran from a battle and left others to die As a Major Hindrance, his deed is well known— or at least known among those he cares about. The other player characters should be told the tale as soon as possible (preferably at character creation). If not, it should be revealed by nonplayer characters at some point, and occasionally used against the hero.
Despite his engagement to Elwyn it is widely known in the village that last summer while Halt was away watching the movements of the armies to the south, Lady Vespernys was also with him. Whether anything improper between them happened or not, the village in general presumes that Halt was not faithful to his betrothed, and took advantage of Lady Vespernys’s...eccentricities.

Edges
  • Woodsman (Free edge for highly skilled): +2 to Survival and Stealth in the wilds
  • Elan (Hinderances): +2 when spending a Benny to reroll a Trait roll.
  • Menacing (Hinderances): +2 to intimidation
  • Danger Sense: +2 to notice rolls for surprise. Notice at -2 to detect hazard not covered by surprise.

Background
Halt was born into a humble, if well enough off family. His father was the farrier of the village, well known for his quality of his work. Halt grew help helping with the family business, and was often called upon to ride the horses that his father had just shod with new shoes back to their owners. After years of making these trips - with a few long detours along the way, Halt became a passable horseman.

On many of those long detours, Halt found himself galloping past the wooded areas not far from the edge of the village. Drawn by curiosity, he started to explore them, and quickly fell in love with the rugged simplicity of life in the woods. In the woods it was do or die. Work hard and you’ll see the fruits of your labors, and the strongest always survive. So different than life back in the village, where politics and bloodlines mattered as much - if not more so - than capability. He quickly developed a shortness of patience for those who made life more complicated than it needed to be, and compared to the simplicity of living in the wild, that was almost everyone. He had an especially sore spot for the nobility, many of whom rested on their laurels and simply rode through life on the blessing of their lucky birth.

That is, he had a sore spot for most nobility. Lady Vespernys was one exception to that rule, but then she was different than many of the others. While she certainly could navigate the political scene like the rest of her family, Vespernys recognized that there was more to life than evening events and social calls - more practical skills to be learned than what size fork to ue to eat your salad. Despite their different backgrounds, they became fast friends, and when Vespernys asked for training in the use of the bow, Halt made a terrible decision.

Halt, despite his general ill-tempered disposition - was engaged to be married to the daughter of the village tanner. It was a betrothal of convenience, though he was fonder of the Elwyn than of most in the village, and believed in time that they could truly come to love one another. Though that may all be ask risk now. When Vespernys asked for his assistance, he told her he had the responsibility of watching the roads along the southern border this summer, reporting back on the movements of the goblin armies to the south. He invited her to join him for the summer, during which he could teach her the intricacies of the bow. She accepted - telling her family who knows what. Halt, used to the practical life of wilds, did not forsee the fallout of spending a summer in the woods with a young woman. When he returned to the village, hushed voices whispered behind his back of betrayal and forbidden romance with a mysterious woman. Suddenly, villagers were unwilling to take Halt’s word for anything, and he found that Elwyn had grown cold and distant. It was only after argument that left his betrothed fleeing with tears in her eyes that Halt realized the depth of his mistake.
