Welcome to our little village, stranger. It's a bit provincial, perhaps, but we look out for one another. We kind of have to, what with the Wood so close these days. You might have to wait a bit before folks are really comfortable around you, but you'll be one of our own soon enough, if you choose to stay.

Hm? Oh, that cottage? Yeah, it's a bit... Well, see, the village abides by tradition. It's how you survive, this close to the Wood. You have Tenders where you come from? Yeah, I see you know about them, at least. That's the Tender's shack. She takes care of the graveyard, quiets the souls there. But you don't want to talk to her.

Well, because she's part of that world, as much as she is this one. Her father was Tender before her. Usually, the job is chosen by lots, and that's how he got the job. Since it's usually a young man that gets the job, they don't have a family, but he was a bit older, and the girl was already there. Her mother'd passed in childbirth, poor thing.

So, anyway, growing up in the Tender's cottage, well, she was exposed to all that at a very young age, you know? Left her touched, I says. She didn't even argue when the Elder told her she was the next Tender, when her father died--just gave this weird smile and said, "Of course." As if that's what she wanted.

Even more than most Tenders, she's a bit of an outsider, for all that she was born here, as a result. There's stories, of course. Janie Fitch tells about how she once snuck up to the cottage on a dare from her mates, back when she and Jaenelle--that's the Tender's name, you understand--were about ten. She peeked in Jaenelle's window, and swears she saw a glowing form over Jaenelle's bed. Janie says that it just made strange noises, not real words, but that Jaenelle would answer back in plain speak, like they was having a conversation. Jaenelle was doing something with candles and chalk, Janie says. She didn't stick around to see what that was about, though.

Course, every once in awhile, someone breaks the taboo of taking company with her. Usually a newcomer, like yourself, really. Best example is Old One-Eye Macron. That is a scary woman. Used to be part of the noble's retinue, and they say she went into the Woods many a time on a culling expedition. She settled here when she got too old to lead the guardsmen, and being something of an outsider, herself, she took a shine to Jaenelle. You'll see the two of them playing at swords and stuff, occasionally, in the field outside her hut across the river.

One time One-Eye went off to go goblin hunting, Jaenelle went to the Wood with her for a few days. When they came back, Jaenelle was carrying a sword she'd picked up someplace. She don't draw it, 'cept for practice, but I've seen the runes on it when she does. They catch the light funny, and some of the old-timers say those runes date back to the Old Kingdom, though Charlie says it should be called the Old Queendom.

Look, I can see you've got some kinda sympathy for her situation, so let me give you one last little warning tale. Back when she was a bit before marrying age, a few of the lads decided to have a little fun. She's got a temper, you see, and can be provoked pretty easily, so one of them taunted her and then led her on a merry chase. But she pulled up short when she realized he'd led her into the group of them, and she was surrounded. Now, I'm not saying that she wasn't right to be upset about that; I'm sure the boys would've stopped before crossing too big a line, but obviously they were at least tryin' to put the frighteners on her, figuring she'd be unable to complain too much about it to their folks.

Well, she didn't complain to their folks. Instead, she complained to... something else. Never got a straight version of the story to tell exactly what she called up that day--each of the boys involved remembered it as something different, and a few of them recollected it differently at different times. Whatever it was, it seemed to be pretty upset about being woken up, and the boys cleared out, though one of 'em looked back and said he saw her get knocked flat by the thing--she'd lost control of it completely.

He saw the woodcutter's son coming over the fence, axe in hand, but didn't stick around to see how things went down. Both of them seemed to be okay, afterwards, though. Still, you see why we steer clear of her, beyond the food and such she gets in exchange for Tending. Best not to get too close to someone who dabbles in those kinds of forces.

******************

From the journal of Agest Moore, Royal Historian:
The practice of 'Tending' as it is known, is still common, but by no means universal, in communities within a day's travel tothe Wood. It is believed that the forgotten and neglected dead are the most likely to become Restless. The precise customs of Tenders vary from one town to the next, but a few key features, most notably the practice of learning the names of all those buried in the local graveyard, and, in villages closest to the Wood, periodically Tending gravesites beyond the Wall.

Tenders are selected according to local custom, as well. Some are chosen by village elders, others by family line, some by the ancient practice of drawing lots. In some towns, the position is rolled into that of gravedigger, while in others, the two positions are not merely distinct, but also wholly separated.

The community attitude towards Tenders in those hamlets that still maintain the practice varies considerably as well. In the safest villages, the local Tender is often treated as a local attraction, a relic of century old custom. Those closer to the Wood are more likely to treat the Tender with reverence, numbered among the village's elders by default. In villages perilously close to the Wood, however, this reverence becomes dread and ostracism, coupled with local practices, such as donating food to the outcast, being used to ensure the Tender remains on the job.
