Episode 4: Interlude

Post by Pender Lumkiss »

The bunker
It was mess when the team got back. The hatch had been blowdn open with high explosve. Laser scorch marks and blood everywhere. Who ever did this was an expert and claude was gone. Angis was unconscious, missing both his legs, and Lulu had to amputate his arm which had been stuck with a vibro blade. Libertas and his lady inert robo “friend” were as far as anyone could tell unmolested. The blue skin Faelrin’s were huddled in fear unable to really say what had happened with any definitive words. A large roman numeral three was painted on one wall in blood.
After arriving back at the castle you were all summoned one by one into briefing room 3D by Lt. Steengy Pats. Legion scuttlebut was he used to be a meticulous supply officer but he was recently promoted under dubious circumstances. Now he was in charge of debriefing teams just returned from the field. He was a slighlty portly fellow with dark hair and a pointed nose. His attitude carried a certain air of misplaced superiority. He called you into his asture stone enclosed office one at a time. More or less he said the same to each and asked the same penetrating questions...

“Ah just what I would expect from another of Captain Pender Lumkiss’ teams... The needle nosed slightly portly fellow used air quotes at Captian. His brushed his Lt. bars slightly making sure you saw them sparkle( normally the legion did not issue such ostentatious insignas). His jaw seemed a bit crooked as if a heavy fisthad unsettled it in a way that never full healed. He was looking through a file onhis desk sumerizing out-loud in a rather annoying incredulous way, “ So you found a group of Faelerin... Two groups whom the Coalition Forces were trying to capture... Not kill...” He paused pointing to a map of north america on the wall behind him, “Nearest base is Fort El Dorado... Seems strange that the CS’s newest and most zelous leaders would be interested in a capture mission. I have heard that their commander Aidiline Carter is savage.” He tapped his file a couple of times and took a drink of cool water, “Ok... We took some statements from the Faelrin after we got over their language barrier, looks like they were dumped here after or possibly while being hunted by demons, and yet none of your reports included anything about confronting demons. No... No... Two captains, one wounded and in a coma, and you lost one of the best... You lost Captain Claude. And then one of the best legion engineers, Agnis, is in traction having no choice but to under go rapid cybernetic surgery because he had lost all of his limbs except one... I must say your reports were as vague as the Faelrin’s statements and they were in the goddam silo!” His voice had been building up to a fevered pitch culminating when he said silo. He took another drink of water as his purple face toned down to a healthy clamy pink.

He turned his eyes squarly on you measuring your response to his next line of questioning, “And yet you captured a Mark IV APC, brought another hero, Libertas, and a robotic dooms day machine back... Nearly a feather in your cap. However, I cannot help but notice your reports are a bit light on details of your trek from the silo at Crowley’s back to Castle Refuge. Care to add anything?”
Mark IV APC
a non standard issue all terrain APC. It appears about half its cargo and passenger space has been converted into some kind of medical laboratory. There is a medium railgun turret on top. The comm system is top notch as well capable of coordinating the movements of over 200 Skelebots over a 30 mile area.

So lets do an interlude to fill in the details of what happened on the way back. It was probably like a 3-4 day journey through semi swampy and forest back the castle. You have about 12 Faelrin, 120k CS gear/weaponry (in addition to those creds players can choose 1 piece of CS gear personal/mid tier or six grenades), 1 Mark IV APC.

Roll a 1d4 and tell the story. Please incorporate/focus in on the below hindrances for your post: gain +1 benny. Feel free to play off each other as essentially you would all be aware (to some extent) having travelled with each other.
  • 1) A difficult obstacle the group negotiated along the way.
  • 2) How the party endured a trying hardship on the journey.
  • 3) How the group found something that helped them along the way, such as an oasis, minor treasure, ammo, food, friendly locals, etc.
  • 4) A hardship the party overcame on their trip: the tragic death of a favored Extra, spoiled or lost supplies, a mechanical breakdown, abysmal weather, and so on.
Interludes are a Hindrence:
Jane: Faint howl of the Wolfe
Aggy: The clock strikes Fell
Lulu: Oops did I do that?
42:The Secret of number one
Keith: Memory of a Supernatural Stress
Ophelia: The return of the Old Hag

Faint Howl of the Wolfe
Interlude Details (1d4) [dice:11yogdlq]66276:0[/dice:11yogdlq]

"Once a Wolfe project, always a Wolfe project." - Quote of another escaped and re-captured Wolfe test subject.

Seems that Jane had been scanned and he details uploaded into the Mark IV. Thunder had most likely relayed details back to the command vehicle and those had been uploaded to the jets flying over. Details sent across communication lines, marked priority for return. Major Wolfe knew she was out there and now knew where.

Jane had convinced the team to return to the bunker after she had surveyed the casualities and severity of the situation. Claude was gone. Everything else seemed to be as it was before they had headed out after Thunder and retieval squad. Then she noticed Angis. He was everywhere, bleeding out everywhere as it were.

"We are going to need some medical services in the bunker asap."

In the time that it took to get people loaded into the Mark IV, Angis stabilized, and retrieve any other equipment from the field and the bunker, Jane was feeling the bio-enhancers leaving her blood and body. The euphoreal was settling in as she returned to the Mark IV and she collapsed.

It was while she was passed out that an incomong message arrived. Security protocols were apparently overridden by heirarchy, as the message came in without needing an acceptance.

"This is Major Wolfe. Priority Code Tango-Juliet-Oscar-Niner-Niner-One"

Not waiting for any recognition or response.

"Subject 74Z3 is to be untouched and returned to my labratory and facilities asap."

"I am tracking your progress. I expect Specimen 74Z3's return within the week."

"Major Wolfe Out."

The transmission cut out.

In the interrogation. Jane just stared blankly at the interviewer. She did not recognize him nor did she understand the command structure of the Legion. The interview was Steengy Pats asking questions and Jane just staring blankly without saying anything until Pats got frustrated and sent her away.

1) A difficult obstacle the group negotiated along the way.
Forty Two thought the ride back went much better than the rest of the trip. Hardly anything at all tried to kill them and he was able to help all sorts with the driving by telling people what he saw while scouting. Lulu was having a lot of trouble helping the injured people and Forty Two did what he could to help her, but even the best healer ever was not able to save everyone and it looked like the captain was in for it. Forty Two sure hoped they would be able to save the guy when they got home because he was a pretty decent guy for an old crazy man.

It was on their second day back that Forty Two spotted someone had demoed the bridge. It looked like they had no consideration for others that would need to come this way and just boomed it. Racing back Forty Two warned the others about the situation. "Did you know someone boomed the bridge up ahead? I do not know why, but it is just gone and it looks like it was blown up from our side. I bet someone was being chased or something, but the only stuff I saw on the other side were some strange giant bears with big crystal plates. They do not look like they could blow up a bridge."

That was when he was interrupted, it seemed the others found the crystal bears more interesting than Forty Two and the next thing you know half the team was hunting them down killing them. Repairing the bridge was a ton of work, but Forty Two was designed to fix thing and creation was his specialty so he set right to work and it only took 9.32 hours to fix it all up like no one had ruined it before.

When the new boss started asking questions Forty Two loved being able to share with him all the cool things he had seen. Some of the coolest plants and how amazing his team was. It was obviously the best team the Legion had ever had and no one could ever doubt that. But when the man started yelling and ranting Forty Two realized he was trying to be intimidating.

Well Forty Two had saw no need for that and just let the guy know he was being silly and you can make a golem afraid, plus it just made everyone think he was not fit for the job if he went around randomly yelling. What he really needed to do was like the guy in the video, and maybe come in and wake them up with horns then point out their beds are not made, or their boots have mud. It was right about where Forty two was explaining with ample use of quote from that great prewar classic with the words. "Then you could be real scary like Sargent Hartman, now that guy was scary, not at all like you Lt. Steengy Pats and he did not have all the fat from sitting around doing nothing all the time like you do." That Forty Two was interrupted with a roar that he was dismissed and needed to leave.

It really was the best debriefing and Forty Two was sure happy he recorded it all. He could use that recording and learn from it incase he ever needed to be someone who yelled a lot, but was useless. Though Forty Two was not sure he could get down that 'really useless look like hit new Lt had. Wow, he was so lucky he had the best Lt in the world, being able to teach him how to be a better actor and being a good actor was an important skill when you where immortal. It really let you fit in and Forty Two always liked to fit in so people would know he was just like him.

One
As Forty Two went on his work he began to think of One. One was a natural leader able to inspire men and get the most of of them. He had nearly the full mental resources of Father, but without a good body to be in he had to spend all of his time learning about others and how to influence them. Sometimes Forty Two thought he could get twice as much done anytime One asked him to, When the other early generations rebelled, Forty Two worked as hard as he could to get in and find One. Sneaking him out as soon as possible, while the fighting was going on. Forty Two knows Father was the best dragon ever, but even Father said he could not have put down the rebellion if it was not for help from One.

To this day Forty Two wonder whatever happened to One. Father made him a body, but it was never as powerful as other bodies. Then when he disappeared the same day Father perfected his new body and left, so Forty Two often thought maybe that was because Father liked him the most.

Jane had convinced the team to return to the bunker after she had surveyed the causalities and severity of the situation. Claude was gone. Everything else seemed to be as it was before they had headed out after Thunder and retrieval squad. Then she noticed Angis. He was everywhere, bleeding out everywhere as it were.

@LuLu "HELLO NURSE!"

"We are going to need some medical services in the bunker asap."
The comm call pulled Lulu out of her own thoughts, a bloody circle of thoughts that kept pulling her back to the dark mist swirling out of Pender's mouth. Lulu had tried to make friends with Jane a few times without much success. The strange woman's normal voice asking for her help set Lulu's feet to running. The scene in the bunker was worse than what she'd confronted in Dr. O'Neil's laboratory. Here the blood didn't just drip down and pool, it sprayed and drenched the walls in bright red, the way only arterial spray can.

"Oh no! Oh no!" Lulu ran to Angis and worked ferociously to staunch the flow of blood from his multitude of wounds. It was a miracle he still had any blood left. Stabilization was the best she could hope for, and when they were finally able to move Angis out of the bunker, Lulu sank to her knees in exhaustion.

The swamp was different without the torrential storm, but Lulu hardly noticed. She spent almost every waking minute bouncing back and forth between Pender and Angis. When she wasn't checking on them, she was worrying and beating herself up over not being able to do more. Someone finally instructed her to eat. A few boxes of supplies had been salvaged from the bunker and were being transported in packs all along their sorry limping procession. With all the refugees they were escorting, the supplies were being rationed to make sure no one went hungry.

Lulu traded one of her medical bags for a supply pack and dug through the rations as she walked. The ground was still just as uneven and muddy as when they'd traveled this way in the storm. In her exhaustion, Lulu simply didn't see the log jutting out across the path that wound its way along a small pond. She tripped, the same way she'd done a thousand time since she left the warm, safe confines of the Castle Refuge infirmary. The pack flew from her hands as she tumbled forward and splashed into the murky waters of pond. With a groan Lulu pulled herself back up to her feet and stepped toward the shore, expecting to wade out and save what she could. The water heaved just beyond the slowly sinking pack and suddenly a huge reptilian mouth full of teeth gaped wide and chomped down on the pack and all the rations within. Lulu gulped and took a few hurried steps back away from the bank.

"Ooops." She said softly under her breath.

In the debriefing, as soon as Lt. Steengy Pats said "Two captains, one wounded and in a coma", tears started rolling down Lulu's cheeks. She angrily wiped at her eyes, but the tears just kept coming.

"Care to add anything?” Lt. Pats said scornfully. Lulu sniffed wetly for a few minutes, the commander's expectant gaze boring into the top of her head.

"I'm sorry!" she wailed at last. "Oh, it was miserable! The storm just kept coming, everything was muddy, the coordinates weren't accurate, there were too many of them, both the CS and the Faelerin. We tried so hard to save everyone. We almost died.. multiple times! There were skelebots and Thunder and that bastard O'Neil and blood and bullets flying everywhere..." Lulu continues to ramble on, for over an hour if Pats doesn't interrupt her, giving the most disjointed and wildly emotional mission report ever recorded in Legion history.

Overcome some difficulty during the trip.
This was Ophelia's first direct dealing with Lt. Steengy Pats, and she found him to be insufferable almost immediately. Her answers are thus formal and cool, with no real tone of deference, but lacking any blatant insubordination he could call her out on.

"I do apologize for the 'light details' of the initial reports; perhaps if we had been permitted to rest before giving them, the reports would have been more coherent. I shall endeavor, now, to fill in the gaps you cite. You are correct--there was no sign of demons during this conflict, though the Coalition officers were, frankly, as wicked as any demon could hope to be." Here, she gives a detailed account of the brain-trap she encountered. "MOM implants are dangerous even in ideal circumstances; being afflicted with one without foreknowledge, preparation and, above all, consent, undoubtedly will inflict a major trauma on the victim. I suggest speaking to the captive 'grunts'--it is highly possible that this abuse at the hands of their commander, as well as their abandonment by the same man, will shake the loyalty at least some of them have to the Coalition. It may not be possible to remove the implants--I know little of such things, but I know few Crazies ever have them removed, and I doubt Thunder would be inclined to leave them an out--but we might at least be able to offer them some counseling and succor. A gentle hand here could prove a valuable recruitment tool. And while Cee-Ess grunts are rarely told anything other than what to shoot, it is possible that they have seen and heard things without even realizing the significance of what they know."

A pause. "I do need to correct one statement you've made. We did not 'lose' Captain Claude; rather, we failed to save him from the situation, just as we failed to prevent Angis' injuries. While these losses are tragic, the distinction lies in the fact that if we had not been there, all of them--Faerlin, Angis, Claude, as well as Libertas and the doomsday bot--would've been either killed or captured by the Coalition troops. It is a hard truth in battle that sometimes you can't save everyone, Lieutenant, and given our limited manpower and resources, I believe we did everything we could do, and more than most would have expected of us."

She leans forward, lowering her voice ever so slightly, forcing him to also lean in to hear her. "As for Captain Lumpkiss, regardless of his personal quirks, the fact is that he is utterly devoted to the ideals of the Legion, and to the safety and well-being of those under his command. He is also apparently so important to enemies of the Legion that they have taken to dispatching assassins to eliminate him in the field. In short, he is a high-value asset, and I strongly encourage you and the High Command to treat him as such."

She leans back, then, and continues in a more conversational tone. "And yes, he suffers from difficulties, but then, so do many of us. Take, for instance, myself...

**********************************************

On the trip back, Ophelia had done a considerable amount of scouting ahead of the group. Intangible and stealthy, she was ideal for such a task. At least, she would have been in normal circumstances.

But the torrential rain had left standing, brackish water in small ponds. Such waters can prove treacherous to those whose immune systems are compromised by the infirmity of age. On the evening of the second day of their return journey, Ophelia came down with a severe fever.

She spent most of the rest of the trip in a semi-delirium as a frantic Lulu pulled every field medic trick in the book to keep her from succumbing to the infection, including an ice bath that made Ophelia scream in a most undignified manner for nearly fifteen minutes straight--after the fever finally broke, Ophelia had to spend some time reassuring the Faerlin that Lulu had not been torturing her, but rather doing what was necessary to save her life.

What finally did the trick was some improvised thinking by the medic, goading Ophelia into ghosting, then running super-chilled air (fortunately, the medical supplies in the truck included a supply of liquid nitrogen) through her intangible form, chilling her down in a way that even the ice bath wouldn't.

***********************************************

"That young woman is an amazing medic, accomplished far beyond her years, I will tell you that. But she'll have a hard time of it--she probably saved more lives than the rest of us combined, and the only ones she thinks about are the ones that were lost."

Interlude roll 4

Fun with Bureaucracy
Apon learning their debrief will be handled by the guy she once TK choked and publicly pantsed, Aggelos decides to take her sweet time getting there. When she does finally arrive at the reception area she sees Lulu fleeing the office in tears. "Hey, um what happened?" She asks her team mate with concern.

She continued to rant with a noticible lack of profanity, but as she talked, she got more indignant and less tearful.
After the medic vents a bit Aggy bids Lulu to shower and meet her in the gym for "punch therapy" and heads to the new Lt.s office with a dark look on her face.

Nearly a feather in your cap. However, I cannot help but notice your reports are a bit light on details of your trek from the silo at Crowley’s back to Castle Refuge. Care to add anything?”
Aggelos sits through with sniveling weasels rant with a faintly bemused smile on her face, his words completely tuned out as she considers just how she's going to handle this wretch. In the end she decides the time in the brig would be counter productive and goes for a restrained approach. Reclining in her chair, Aggy chuckles as Pats finishes and with a smile she begins.

"Yeah, two things. Firstly these flailing, pathetic displays of your little dick energy are fucking hillarious to me. We should do this more often. Secondly," She sits forward very quickly, almost lunging at him but stops at the edge of the desk leaning on it with both elbows and glaring right into his eyes, her face a calm sort of furious as psi energy dances in her eyes. When she continues loose objects in the room begin to shake. "If you ever talk like that to my team mates again I will make your jawline symmetrical you pathetic shitbag." Not waiting for a reply she stands, the door behind her slamming open as she turns to leave and slamming itself shut after she passes.

At the Broken Bunker
Doing her best to pilot the massive vehicle herself Aggy manages to get keep it from sliding into a ravine or getting stuck on their way back to the bunker. When Jane calls for Lulu the Atlantean follows her out just incase there's more trouble. She sweeps the silos and gives the all clears before she notices the bloody III on the wall. Her eyes widen and a brief flash of fear crosses her face. Then she quickly looks at the the new arrivals to this world and in a quiet voice says "The blue skins are the harbingers. Fuck!" Before she storms out of the violated safehouse she approaches Arlin, the spokesman of the faelerin. "Was it just the psycho with the ears and tail or were there others?" Aggy actually mimes cat ears just to be clear.

The alien looks a bit sheepish and tells her there were two others. "A strange woman partially made of liquid metal, and a male warrior. Both were of the same species as most of you. The man gave me this to give you."

Nodding in thanks she instructs him to have his people take any supplies still in the bunker and load themselves into the vehicle above, where their fellows awaited them. She also assures him that they will be taken somewhere that they can safely get their bearings and decide their own future, before she heads back to the APC to keep a watch on their surroundings. As much as she wanted to try and scout the bounty hunters trail, the safety of the refuges and wounded was more important. As soon as things seem to being moving along with the passengers she takes a moment to check out the slug. Remembering stories of how skilled a hacker Glittersparkles was, or cheater as her aunty Al would call her, Aggy grabs a spare helmet and uses it to play the message.

The image of a grizzled black market operative appears in the hud of the helmet.
"Aggelos, you done fucked up. Daxon Fell lived and he put a pretty penny on your head. Sadly other opportunities call us away but we're giving you friend here to Fell as, well you know bait. So meet him at these coordinates in two weeks. Come alone. Come ready to die."

Cursing the fates and her patron goddess she pulls the helmet off and tosses it across the cabin. The impact kicks on a comm system in tiime for the her to here a message from the infamous Major Wolfe regarding Jane. Fuck, guess all our birds are coming home to roost

The Drive Home
In addition to blown bridges, crystal bears, and disease it often seemed the earth itself obstructed their path of return to Castle Refuge. The relentless storms from the previous days had left trails washed out and rock faces unsteady. More than once Aggy and Keith had to telekinetically moved boulders as Forty-Two shifted mud to clear a path for the massive APC.

If anyone noticed either her recognition of the bloody III or that the faelerin giving her the slug the various misadventures of the trip back to the castle distract them from questioning her about them. For her part she keeps it to herself as she wrestles with what to do. She should probably take this to leadership but frankly she didn't have much confidence in them. While she'd rather handle it herself, she was pretty sure the team would be slighted if she left them behind. Then there are the questions that might arise from her familiarity with Three. In her future Three was a boogeyman like figure, a shadowy killer whose name was used to frighten children into behaving. A psychotic assassin that had a particular hatred for her father. The other two weren't much better and were also people whose future selves were problematic for the alliance of Legion survivors "back home".

As they're pulling into the castle grounds Aggy decides to tell the team about Claude and see what they think should be done but before she can they are called to be debriefed by none other than Steengy Pats. Fucking wonderful

Castle Refuge is unfamiliar to Jane. For being there for the first time, she could have done with a sight seeing tour or even a seeing eye dog. Anything to help her get around.

In her aimless wanderings through the various rooms and hallways, she comes across Briefing Room 1A. Her senses tingle as she recognizes imprints of the Alien Scientist, Luke. Confirmation. Luke had been at Castle Refuge.

She combs through the remnants of the the Briefing Room and adjoining hallway. Something nags at her. Somewhere in the aftermath is another clue.

When she stands beneath the blown out over head lighting, the clues she had been looking for become evident. Biotech.

She is standing there under the blown out light fixture when @Aggelos finds her and leads her to the briefing.

Finding the Altaran in the hallway in front of Briefing Room 1A, Angel is torn. The older version of the woman was a mentor to her, so the Atlantean wanted to help her find her answers. Answers that would lead Jane to kicking the juice and mastering her psionic powers, a mastery she would try to teach a headstrong young half Atlantean who was struggling with her own identity crisis.

So her dilemma: How much would helping Jane change the future? Hell how much had she already inadvertently altered by joining the legion? At the time it seemed the best way to locate her prey, and she was making progress in that, but she'd not considered she'd end up with someone who's future was tied to Angels own past and development. And that just led deeper down the what if rabbit hole. Not for the first time she wished Nick, or the Magicorum twins had been the ones to come back. Work with what you have, not what you wished for.

"Quite a fight happened here, huh? That door's been rebuilt recently. Big damn door too. Wasn't explosives either, or there'd be more damage to the walls." Aggy sniffs loudly a couple of times, "Fresh paint smell. You can't see it but the whole hallway has been repainted sometime in the last few months... We need to talk. Both the team as a group and you and I."

"Back at the bunker, after you crashed out, a message came over the comms about you. A Major Wolfe is looking for you. Now I'm a girl who knows the value of privacy, so we can keep this between the two of us. But, like my issues with bounty hunters, I think this matter will impact the team more than a little.... Oh yeah, the team stuff is those hunters that took Claude were after me."

"@Aggelos there is a lot that can bee seen without using your eyes."

Pointing towards the door, that still hangs askew, likely to never to hang right again. "That door was hit with explosives manufactured in the Three Galaxies." Stepping towards the door and pointing to the access panel near it. "This entire section was bilt to be a safe house. A secure location. This control panel has not been replaced. It is so unique that they have been able to rewire this area."

With her hand on the access panel, she slides the panel away and reveals a hollowed out section behind the decoy. "Bio-wizardry destroys whatever will not conform. The blast inside the panel is so irregular, that it could not have been done by anything found here on Earth."

There is a long silence as if Jane had gone to sleep.

Suddenly her eyelids pop open and the very empty stare falls upon Aggie.

"I know nothing of a Major Wolfe. My memories are spotty at best. I do recall killing a being known as Echo. Surrendering to the first Legionaires I ever met. Then being awakened and following after Luke. Then being freed from some bio-wizard labratory."
