Background:
Keiko was born with a degenerative nerve condition that caused her to begin losing her vision in her early childhood. By the time she was in middle school she was completely blind. Hatoru and Inoue, her father and mother, are first generation Japanese immigrants. With a successful career in finance, Hatoru is well to do and at first doggedly pursued treatments for his daughter. When those treatments failed, he instead saw to it that she was kept comfortable and safe. The Ichimura family's hopes for the future went to her younger brother Itachi.

But they were all of them deceived.

When Keiko was about twelve, the last of medical miracles had failed to restore her sight. Hatoru decided to givesome 'alternative' medical treatments a try. One such treatment involved sensory deprivation. It was floating in a tank of body-temperature salt water that Keiko first 'saw' again. Kind of. After a few vivid hallucinations, they finally opened the tank, and Keiko for a moment swore she could 'see' light flooding in, the therapist leaning down over her. Just a flash. Though at first she dismissed it as another hallucination, before Keiko left she asked if she could feel the therapist's face. It really was just like she'd 'seen' it.

Keiko experimented with trying to replicate the process on her own. Starting with the bathtub, then her own bed, she found that she really could sort of get 'flashes' though frustratingly short. Intriguingly, they came whether her eyes were closed or not. Because she wasn't sure what was going on, she said nothing about these experiments.

With practice, she started seeing improvement. Keiko got better and better at evoking those flashes of sight, and started being able to sustain them for longer. At first it was kind of like sonar...pulses where she could see for a heartbeat, and that she had to really work to get her mind into the right frame to do. It was still thrilling though, still exhilarating to get ANY kind of vision back after so long without. Day by day, it got easier to get a 'pulse.' Day by day they lasted longer before fading from her mind's eye.

She was fifteen when she learned to really 'see' again. After so long working at it, Keiko almost went to her parents to tell them the good news. Except...she realized that she really had no idea what she was doing, or how or why. It felt to her kind of like daydreaming, imagining a vision, except from trial and error she knew that what she was seeing was real. There was something else too, a kind of buzz in her head that was linked to what she saw. More experiments in a dark room with a flashlight, and Keiko thought she was starting to get it. The buzz only showed up when there was light near her. Louder for brighter light, and with a peculiar sort of tonality for different colors. It wasn't really a sound...that was just the easiest way to think of it.

So Keiko did the obvious thing. She tried to buzz back. The world changed for her, all over again. Because there was a little flash of light in the air in front of her.

When Keiko graduated from high school, there was no talk about what she'd do next in her family. She knew perfectly well that her father, fearing for her in the outside world, would probably keep her in the house, with a maid or something to look after her, forever. Keiko had other plans.

A double life began. One where she was a quiet, meek blind girl who stayed at home and was well-behaved and rather pathetic. The other by night when the first was 'asleep,' and she slipped out of the house to do all the things she couldn't do. Why didn't she tell her parents? Keiko wasn't sure, except that she intuited that this gift she had was most valuable when no one knew she had it. Sooner or later it would come out, and the party would be over...so now was the the time to party it up.

And what a party it was. At first she just did normal everyday things that she normally couldn't...go take those martial arts classes, or play a pickup game or two. Quickly though, the potential of her powers for mischief convinced her to take more risks. Shoplifting, for example, was easy when you could just make yourself disappear. As Keiko got better at manipulating light, she got better at figuring out ways to use it. Often she'd create an image of herself for her nannies to mind while she crept away invisibly to mess with people. Stealing things out from under the noses of people was somehow the best though...it was such a rush to defeat safeguards and get away with a prize! It wasn't even about money...her dad was rich and she didn't need it anyway. It was about the risk, and the reward.

Things started to fall apart though when she tried to rob a bank. That was a level of security that far exceeded what she was used to, and she slipped up a little. Her distraction didn't work well enough, the guard returned early, and she nearly got grabbed despite being invisible. The camera footage showed what was going on, and Keiko couldn't be sure if it showed a little too much...so she tried to infiltrate the police station in the bank's precinct to get ahold of the footage. It would have worked, but someone else showed up to get the same thing.

Someone else who had powers. In this case, powers to see through illusions. Keiko was nabbed by the agent rather effortlessly, and presented with a choice that wasn't really a choice. Come work for SPEAR, or be prosecuted. Keiko had only one condition...they had to help her lie to her family about it.

So now Hatoru and his wife believe that Keiko's test scores have attracted the attention of a major university, with special programs for blind people, and they couldn't be prouder.

It's even kind of true...in a way.
