Background:
Like a lot of people, Renata owes the Fallen one. Maybe two or three.

Her dad's kind of a big deal in politics now, but when she was younger he was a good guy. A bit too ambitious for his own good, maybe...a bit too willing to compromise values now in exchange for the power to make it all better later...but a good guy. She remembers clearly who he used to be. The sharp and subtle humor, the keen insight, and the genuine desire to try to solve problems. That guy's gone now. The Fallen took him.

She doesn't know exactly when it happened, or what he was offered...but right around where she went into high school is where she really noticed the change. He was still just as jovial, just as pleasant natured as ever, but there was this faint sense of insincerity that Renata could feel. And it seemed like she was the only one. And behind the scenes, when no one was watching, he got ruthless in how he handled friends and foes...effortlessly playing the Machiavelli even as he charmed his way through the polls. Funds flowed in, his fortunes flowered...and the better things went, the more Renata felt like something was very wrong.

This unease colored her life. She started having a hard time at school and her social life broke down. Her father took things in hand, exerting his growing influence to force her on a path he thought was best for her...not a BAD path necessarily, but not one she was choosing. By the time she was graduating from high school...after being spared expulsion due to her dad's intervention, and then having to finish school at a private school...her college had been chosen, and her preferred major of Criminal Justice had been forbidden. In retaliation, in rebellion...in a desperate and nigh-self-destructive bid to retain SOME kind of agency in her life, Renata went out after hours on campus and started breaking up crimes in progress, inspired by a chance encounter one night.

Once she started 'rescuing' people, she felt an ever increasing drive to keep doing it. The feeling she got was...comforting. Like for a moment, just a moment, the world was right again and she was where she belonged. Then one night she almost died doing it. What she thought was a co-ed being victimized transformed into something horrible before her eyes just as she was shoving one of the frat jocks away from her. The guy, she realized too late, wasn't leering...he seemed dazed, entranced. He stayed that way as the weird snaky thing that the girl became bit him in half across the midsection. Somehow, despite the terror...despite what felt like black madness staining her eyes and mind...Renata fought. She fought because it was what her body knew, even if her mind was taking a vaycay.

And somehow, when she should have been torn into pieces and thrown into the treetops for people to find the next day, Renata found herself actually...fighting. There was a heat in her head, in her hands. The feeling she got stopping car break-ins and date rapes was nothing compared to this. The comparison was nukes to candle flames. The fear burned away and all that was left was was a simple, dread imperative.

Destroy it.

When it was done, what was left of the girl looked like a deformed skeleton in a loose stocking of skin. The surviving frat guy had fled. The other...well, there was nothing to do for him. She left.

It's been a couple of years since then. Figuring stuff out hasn't been easy. At first Renata had no guidance. She learned she could use that 'heat' to find the monsters, even when they were disguised. It didn't always work, and it took some effort, some concentration...but when it worked she could feel them nearby. What was shocking was how many of them there were. Little ones, big ones...most of them were sort of latched onto people without changing them. Some though...some were walking in human skins. Those were the ones she targeted.

And, after a little while doing that, she got some attention. Both the right kind, and the wrong.

The worst moment though was when she finally found some time to visit home. Her dad's one of them now. She isn't sure exactly to what extent, but it feels bad. The whole place is infested. Renata could feel them around her mother, her two brothers...trying to take them too. And she couldn't stop them. Until they had physical forms, they were just like ghosts. There had to be a way though. There had to be others like her.

So she started looking...and eventually, she found them.
