Savage Ravenloft

Beyond mortal senses, beyond your reality, there lurks a boundless plane. It permeates your world and fills the void between worlds. It is the border between the lands of the living and of the dead. There, mind and matter become one; thought and passion, fear and yearning can become more tangible than iron. It is the Ethereal Plane.

Somewhere, lurking deep within those ethereal mists, a dark and nameless dimension is ruled by dark and nameless powers. Some say it is a prison for the damned; some say it is a crucible to test the virtuous. Others simply call it home. It is a land of mist and shadow, love and death, sacrifice and seduction, beauty and horror. It is a land of whispered fears made manifest. It is the Realm of Dread.

Perhaps you have sensed its touch. At the bidding of the Dark Powers, tendrils of the ethereal Mists that bind this land reach out to caress the Material Plane. They stroke the skin at the back of your neck when a creaking floorboard warns that you are not alone in the dark. Their invisible fingers crawl down your spine when inhuman shadows rustle at the edges of your vision.

The Mists do more than merely caress. The Dark Powers are drawn to innocence and villainy, to loathing and desire, to obsession, and to despair. They seek out squandered dreams and inner demons. They savour the decay of the spirit. Their Mists snatch up fiends at the moment of their ruin and steal upon heroes in times of doubt.

To what end do the Dark Powers add these souls to their tarnished collection? To torment them? To purify them? None can say, for few souls drawn into the Realm of Dread ever leave to tell the tale. Yet perhaps you will soon learn for yourself, for tonight, the Mists have come for you.

Welcome to the Land of Mists. Welcome to the crucible of virtue and the spoils of damnation.

Welcome to the Realm of Dread.

Welcome to Ravenloft.

Ravenloft is a world unlike other worlds. It is a construct, an artificial pocket realm endlessly prowling the trackless Ethereal Plane. The implacable Dark Powers crafted their realm from the hidden fears of the innumerable worlds of the Material Plane, and shape reality to reflect their sinister sensibilities.

The so-called 'Mists of Ravenloft' are notable for having a life of their, either forming borders to isolated domains or leading travelers astray to realms far from their intended destination. From time-to-time the Mists extend their tendrils into any world with ties to the Ethereal Plane and snatch individuals from those worlds, stragglers whom the insular folk of Ravenloft call 'outlanders'.

You are one such outlander.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Welcome to my crack at the classic D&D setting Ravenloft, a setting focused on the Gothic Horror tropes of vampires, werewolves and other things that go bump in the night. The idea is that those who take part will play typical fantasy characters who find themselves being taken from their own worlds by the Mists and dumped in the world of Ravenloft. Their goal will be to survive and then, eventually, find a way to return home.

But the Mists and the Realm of Dread aren't things to be trifled with.

Character Brief

As mentioned above, the idea is for all the characters to be so-called 'outlanders'...those who originate from a world other than Ravenloft.

Your world of origin may or may not become important, but feel free either to use a generic fantasy world or an established setting. Though if characters die I'll allow replacements in the form of 'native born' Ravenloft characters. It'll be up to the players whether they're from the same world or different worlds, though language may be a barrier.

Savage Worlds Deluxe is going to be the main book, the Fantasy Companion could be useful if you have it. Strongly recommend checking out the Savage Worlds conversion for Ravenloft linked below.

Setting Rules

Domains of Dread

Each domain of Ravenloft is its own little world and its own peculiar quirks and laws that change the way reality itself works. This means most domains may have a setting rule or two of their own.

Additionally, no force of mortal origin - magic, technology, or divine miracles wielded by a mortal - can penetrate the borders of a domain if they are 'closed'. Most forms of magic cannot penetrate even 'open' borders due to the metaphysical properties of the world (a person can walk across an open domain border but can't use a Teleport to do the same thing).

Fate is Fickle

While Fate can be cruel, that cruelty can aid heroes. Whenever an enemy draws a Joker in combat, all player characters receive a Benny. Additionally, all Edges that would take effect when the player draws a Joker instead gain their benefit whenever anyone draws a Joker for initiative (not just the character who drew the Joker).

Insular

The various domains of the Land of Mists are largely isolated from one another. Even when they are part of the same Cluster, the people of one domain tend to regard their neighbours with suspicion and ignorance.

In game terms, this means that Common Knowledge checks take a penalty based on whether or not a character is seeking information about his homeland or another domain. This penalty ranges from –1 (different domain in the same Cluster) to –4 (isolated Island of Terror).

Multiple Languages

Though many languages are spoken across the Land of Mists, characters start play only knowing a single language (their native language). Overtime they can learn other languages and will be given the Linguist Edge.

Though trying to communicate with somebody who's language you do not know, a character has to make a Smarts roll at -2 in order to converse best they can.

Outlander

All initial characters will begin with the Outlander Hindrance (page 32 Ravenloft Reincarnated), though this will be an 'extra' Hindrance in addition to Hindrances normally taken at character creation. The Outlander Hindrance will go away when the character reaches Veteran Rank rather than 'paid off'. New characters (if not native born) take the Outlander Hindrance like normal.

Power of the Tarot

The Adventure Deck is used.

Realm of Terror

Ravenloft is a realm whose very nature is inextricably tied to fear and horror. The oppressive weight of terror can drive even strong men mad.

Some places are more terrifying than others. Any place designated as a "Sinkhole of Evil" applies its rating as a penalty to Fear checks. This penalty is cumulative with the penalty some monsters inflict for being particularly scary, and it adds to a character's rolls on the Fright Table!

Additionally, the "Mark of Fear" entry on the Fright Table is instead replaced by Dementia:

*19-20 Dementia: The hero is Shaken as his mind reels from the abject horror - and breaks! Roll on the Dementia Table to determine a permanent condition that will be suffered by the character from now on. Add any modifiers the character would have suffered on the initial Fear check.
