Character Creation - Discussion Thread

Post by Greywolf »

Hey All,

As discussed in my PM, here's the thread for you to all pitch in and discuss anything bothering you about character creation. I'll be available to help as and when needed, but you've a good mix of new an old players, so you should muddle most things out yourselves.

Have fun, and write me up some nice interesting characters. :)

I think I'll switch to an engineering track.

2 questions not actually character creation related.

1) How do dice rolls work here? The example listed in the posting thread says "Invalid Code" so it doesn't actually show how to do it.

2) why the notice roll at the start of each post? The example for it also had a notice roll at the bottom (which was worse). Is the first one for something else?

Most games have everyone make a notice roll at the start of the turn. It helps for noticing things that may or may not be there. If the DM asks for notice rolls, then players know something is out there or could be. This way it adds to the unknown.

That was my assumption, but the example making the additional notice roll muddied the waters.

The second one was for a specific purpose so a second roll. That's how it seems to me.

That was my assumption, just seemed weird that the initial notice roll wouldn't cover that situation. I'll roll with it however though!

OK, yes a notice roll at the top of the post is advantageous. If a specific character has a reason for a different roll I'll ask for it.

Example would be. . .
Notice
Notice: [dice:2h4paoyc]45151:0[/dice:2h4paoyc], Wild Die: [dice:2h4paoyc]45151:1[/dice:2h4paoyc]
Then I generally edit my post to highlight what my best roll was. If the submission reveals it was an Ace, then add another dice roll for the Ace, check the result and post the total at the end of the line. . .

Like this one
Notice
Notice: [dice:2h4paoyc]45151:2[/dice:2h4paoyc], Wild Die: [dice:2h4paoyc]45151:3[/dice:2h4paoyc], Ace: [dice:2h4paoyc]45151:4[/dice:2h4paoyc], Total = 8

No problem at all. The edge is there to help out. I can use it to give little nudges when the party seem at a loss. ;)

Awesome, now I just need to figure out the syntax to make that happen 😁 The example is broken and doesn't display the bbcode for it.

Ok, figured it out.

You can just tap where it says dice at the top of the editing window. This puts the bbcode in for you, you just put your dice code in between the tags.
Same goes for most commonly used tags. :)

You granny and my dead friend from the Army might end up hanging out.

would it be redundant to have two people with spirit guardian? I wanted to have just a touch of weird (I assume one of the history or archaeology types will end up with rituals), I could switch to psychically sensitive as well. That leads to things like aura reading, which might be useful for a psychology major

For a moped, I'd be tempted to call it a street bike with reduced top speed.

Just a note, the Notice roll at the top of the post is a bit...vestigial. Most GMs have moved away from it (there were issues with crit-fails and TDs, though that won't likely be an issue in ETU). Most now either just call for one when needed, or have you put one in at the top of a scene and don't worry about it again unless needed.

The code runs like this (use [] instead of {})

{OOC=Notice #}
Notice {dice}1d6{/dice}
Wild {dice}1d6{/dice}{/OOC}

Apologies in advance if this is against protocol, but I took a quick look at Philippa. 2 things jumped out
1 - In ETU danger sense requires Psychically Sensitive (I happened to know this because it's first on my list of edges to take)
2 - It looks like you either have 1 edge to many, or an attribute to high.

It'll get worked out via private messages. I had a mistake in mine (2 concepts got mixed) and it was pointed out and resolved.

I figure if I can help the player fix it before the Dean is involved, it'll make approval faster/smoother/etc., and the game can start sooner.

I have already had a conversation about it, but I must admit I missed the problem with Danger sense.

Will hopefully get it ironed out today.
Then with luck we're pretty much good to go, assuming everyone else is happy with their characters.

A couple things.

1. Are we using Adventure Cards or not?

2. Anyone want to do roommates? I've left Eugene open (Whitehall dorm) for a roommate. It's a co-ed dorm. I'm not sure how they do co-ed. Different floors/wings? Or actual co-ed rooms? That could be...amusing if Eugene gets a female roommate. I'll leave it up to whoever wants to be his roommate.

3. Do we have a Hangout for this game?

Hi,

In answer to your questions
  • I'm on the fence about adventure cards. Sometimes they are fun others they seem to break the flow a little, at least to me.
    I have a deck, so I'll review them this evening and decide. If anyone has strong views on them, speak up.
  • Roommates, well if you wanna share that's fine. I have no problem with it unless you've taken annoying roommate. Best not to salt another PC with that. I'm gonna rule that each floor in Whitehall is single sex, definitely no mixed sharing of rooms. 😉
  • Hangout - not yet, but there will be soon as I figure one out.
