Near Dark
Near Dark
The outdoor crew slinks into the bleak desert, heading for the vehicle. It's a few kilometers away, which is nothing for the strong physical types that populate Rifts earth. Only the edge of the sun is visible when the journey starts, and it quickly vanishes beyond the horizon. Now that it is no longer gracing you with its warmth, the temperature drops rapidly, the dry air offering no buffer. You hear a chorus of howls in the distance, a strange timbre to it causes a few extra shivers. @Jesse (Graunk) immediately recognizes what it really is: Wild Vampires.

Rio moves closer to Splash, for danger. Splash assumes a defensive position, similarly for what might lie in the gloom. "I don't know what that was, but it isn't friendly. Nothing out here is." Within himself, Rio gathers the confluence of the elements in preparation for battle.

Xiang rises from where he'd been napping and gives a lazy stretch, but his ears are perked forward in interest. "It is about time." he says before transforming into a diminutive felinoid form. His archaic armor of native central american design is a bit at odds with the high tech polimer TW shield that snaps open one one of his wrists. gleams from the armor as the cat-man mutters an incantation in an ancient language, then it flows to line the claws on his other hand.

Re: Near Dark
@Rio Vaughan spots a lone coyote about 100 meters to the east. It is simply sitting there, watching the group. This doesn't seem to be typical behavior for a prairie wolf, so Rio is definitely suspicious. Splash however has his mystic senses active and can see the tell tale there is some sort of mystical effect happening with the coyote. @Scalawag is able to tell that this is some sort of psionic effect.

Splash sloshes a bit. Rio nods. "I see it. That's usually a pack animal." Splash bubbles and gurgles. Rio gives him a quick side glance. "Mystic aura? Accounts for the funny behavior." He whistles to the rest of his friends. "Guys, turn your eyeholes out that way. Juuuust along that little rise. There's a coyote sitting by itself. Splash says it's got some kind of power aura." He turns to check the immediate area. "Maybe let's keep our eyes open."

Scalawag notes, "The aura appears to be psychic. I do not feel the creature itself to be evil, though it may be used by an evil being as a spy."
He should be able to tell if it is an evil supernatural creature, but his senses are less certain about other creatures being good or evil.

Graunk grunts and nods. “my brethren, the baying sounds we hear in the distance are indeed pack communications, but that is no normal pack” He knowingly announces. “That is a roaming band of savage vamps, hunting and out for flesh and blood. If we have heard them then they are already stalking us and will soon close for the feast.” The Orc grinds a sharp toothed grin as his mystical silver blades stab forth from his ornate gauntlets. “ What say we grind and burn them from our world. I shall try and determine if they are indeed wild or if they are being driven by a greater force. Show NO weakness, give NO mercy. The light will prevail!” Determination and excitement carries his words as the capable group of adventurers prepare for conflict.

Rio spins around. "Bad way to be, out in the open. Here. Cluster up!" Focusing his energy, he causes the water vapor in the area to condense into a that encircles the group, leaving an opening facing the coyote in the distance. "Let's see a bunch of bloodsuckers get us through that!" Splash bubbles and gurgles, then steps in front of Rio. The elemental rises to its full height, taking up most of the opening of the barrier. Rio laughs. "Come on, you chickens! Come get a drink!"

A dozen shabby looking bats drop out of the sky, their ratty looking wings announcing their presence before you see them. Wild vampires are for Rio. They are as frightening as a lone blowing tumbleweed. He has danced this dance before, so he while for his friend to act. And act he does. Rio gestures at each of his friends. Condensation forms on their weapons until the sharp parts begin to drip...then . Then he makes his own direct impact.
Spreading out his palms, two streams of superheated steam blasting them through the chest and into mist. He laughs almost maniacally, then proceeds to mock them. "You sapsuckers didn't think you were going for a hot spring swim, did ya?! Come on! Got plenty for all y'all!"
Splash bubbles eagerly, preparing to make his own waves.

Rio falters only momentarily as the vampire's suggestion worms its way into his head. He and laughs. "Oh come on! You can't get in my head, bloodsucker. Try the direct approach next time! Right through my friend here!" He points at the massive water elemental.

While always up for a good fight Xiang is no fool, rushing into a pack alone, even with ranged support, was not the brightest idea. But then neither is sitting around and letting the bloodsuckers try and control their minds so he rushes out. A second too late to stop the first attempts but fortunately Rio's will is strong.
Powering up as he moves in, his form becomes blurry and indistinct. With a dive he rolls around behind one then springs up into the air, twisting around to slash at the back of the vampires neck.

Inspired by the quick actions and determination of his companions,Graunk allows a moment to let the spiritual energies of the suns energy wash over him, lifting his spirits. The familiar feeling strengthening his Will. Xiang’s connection with the Sun is strong. As a Master of the Arcane, Graunk has Mastered the Light of the Sun as well, and can use its energy to fight the darkness and incinerate its minions. His Ancestral Vambraces dripped with the Elemental steam, a welcomed manifestation of Rio’s connection with the natural world.Instead of a flurry of silvered blades and martial prowess, an his instinctive immediate response to the materializing Wild Vampires, Graunk calmly produces from his gauntlet a small circular silver medallion. Taking it by the cord he begins to swirl it in a circular motion so fast it becomes a silver circle of motion before him. With a loud guttural Arcane shout “ SHI-RAK”- a ball of intense platinum white true sunlight snaps into place within the spinning disk. Immediately Sunlight burst out from the primal energy center Graunk created, emanating out in a blinding sphere, purging the darkness from a large radius surrounding himself and companions.

Meanwhile, a few dunes away...
Elizabeth Laskaris of Clan Skellig had come across the Mountaineer tucked away a little off the beaten path, not long after she spotted New Del Rio on the horizon, shimmering in the late afternoon mirages. The whinnying and whuffing of her horse, Zephyr, alerted her to something odd nearby. That let her know to check the tire tracks she'd been keeping periodic tabs on...and those led her off to where the all-terrain vehicle had been left. Buttoned up tight and locked.
Fortunately the Tomorrow Legion accounted for its toys though, and a quick consult of her orders and dossier let her verify that the ID number on this vehicle matched.
No one answered when she rapped her knuckles on the armored door though, and radio frequencies were quiet save for the faint background chatter that she assumed was from the distant city. A bit of checking confirmed her suspicions...footprints had left the transport and went off towards New Del Rio...easier to make out in the firmer ground around where they'd parked. Their tracks had been scrubbed from the deepening desert sand by wind though. She was still behind, and judging from the sun's position she wouldn't make the city before nightfall.
On the plus side, they wouldn't be going far before returning here. Elizabeth considered just waiting for them, but only momentarily. New Del Rio was a rough town...the humans nearly as dangerous as the bloodsuckers. If they lost anyone while she cooled her heels here, she'd always wonder if she might have saved them.
So she left it behind, heading towards the city lights as they slowly became visible in the darkening twilight.
At first glance a casual observer would be forgiven for thinking Miss Laskaris was some down on her luck biker from Pecos. Clad in a weathered denim vest and black halter top that left most of her sculpted abdominals bare, with scuffed dark blue jeans and black leather boots, she looked the part. Only the olive green cloak draped around her shoulders seemed to offer any shelter from the sweltering sun. Contributing to that was the fact that almost every inch of her exposed skin, excepting only her face, was covered in colorful, intricate tattoos in a kind of living tapestry. Warriors did battle with beasts with both weapon and spell, while forests reached skyward and strange iconography of hearts and skulls and stranger still wove throughout it all. It told a tale, but one too complex to easily suss out on sight.
And if sometimes some of those images weren't in exactly the same place, or pose, from once glance to the next...well...it would be very hard to tell unless one was very alert indeed.
There was something not quite real about Elizabeth, in fact. In another age, she would have seemed like a glamorous actress portraying a badass warrior woman rather than an actual warrior. She was a little too gorgeous, a little too perfectly sculpted. No scars or persistent injuries. No haunted thousand-yard stare. Oh, she looked strong...a toned musculature and a tall stature were clearly on display...but she didn't look like someone who'd been in a real fight. Similarly, Zephyr was a magnificent horse; huge and strong, but his gleaming white hide was unblemished, his hooves unshod. Most tellingly of all...her only weapons were a souped up squirt rifle slung behind her back, and some kind of large pistol that looked more like a flaregun than anything else.
It would be easy indeed for an experienced mercenary to think she was some poseur. Too easy. An even more experienced mercenary might wonder how someone who seemed like that had lasted this long, or had managed to cross any amount of Rift-swamped wilderness without armor or reasonable weapon. It was kind of a filter she used.
She was still quite some distance out from New Del Rio when Elizabeth spotted lights from over a ridge up ahead. The sound of shouts, and a rushing sound like a flooding river. Those shouts though...she knew them, oh yes. Not personally, but the otherworldly hunger in them. The growling sound of something as much beast as man, or maybe even more so. She slipped off the saddle, and Zephyr dissolved into a silvery mist that coalesced and flowed onto her upper shoulder, where it formed a distinct image of that horse standing menacingly in a meadow with a forest fire in the background.
A fierce, pounding joy beat through her veins as she rushed forward afoot, devouring the desert in long leaping strides through the sand. Wild vampires were attacking someone. Maybe a dozen to a score of them by the sound of it. Though there was another sound of gurgling water, and many of the shouts were drowned before Elizabeth crested the ridge. By the time she got eyes on the vampires there were only three left...though she spotted thin clouds of mist rapidly receding as well.
With the first two fingers on her left hand she touched one of her tattoos; the image of a skeleton with a heart beating in its ribcage; a heart with a pair of angelic wings, just over her righthand ribs. Simultaneously she focused on the mental image of a tattoo drawn boldly over the inside of her left forewarm, that of a silvery-hued compound bow with a flaming arrow at nock, with a rising sun behind it.
The bow appeared her hand, vanishing from her skin as it did so.
Elizabeth tossed her cloak back, revealing a quiver of arrows it had been hiding, pushed up against some metal contraption of bronze and wood, about the size of a small backpack.
In as much time as it took to draw a breath, the magically enhanced warrior had drawn, aimed and loosed two arrows in rapid succession; each one bursting into silver-white flame as it was launched through the air, like a tiny comet. Each one aiming for one of the remaining vampires. Not just anywhere on them, of course...but their hearts.

Scalawag uses a portion of his Hydrokinesis to redirect some of the water in the area into a blast to attack one of the remaining wild vampires...unless he can effect the clouds of mist that are trying to get away. If he could grab the mist with his telekinesis and hold it so it can not get away, that would be more useful, but if he can not do that he will simply do a hydrokinetic water jet.

Rio laughs hysterically as several vampires are skewered by a hail of silver arrows. "You suckers are having just the worst day ever. That's...well, that's just AWFUL!" The remaining vampires would be unconvinced of Rio's sympathy if they lasted long enough to think about it. Unfortunately for them, roiling jets of steam, coupled with a tsunami flung by Splash, leave their un-thought. The warlock and his companion soak the desert sands in an exuberant flood. "Look! Re: Near Dark
The three vampires dropped like puppets with their strings cut, and Elizabeth nodded to herself with grim satisfaction. She had started trotting forward, preparing to hack the vamps' heads off and ignite them to finish the job when the question was settled by the laughing spellcaster with magic sprays of water.
"It takes more than water to make an oasis, mage," she says with a big grin as she came forward. Her bow was still in her hand, but she didn't hold an arrow. The time for fighting was done for now. "The old word meant 'dwelling place.' It needs fertile soil. Plants and trees."
Her voice was loud, with just a hint of a hard-to-place accent. Her tone was light, a little teasing...more of a verbal sparring than an 'um, actually' correction. As if to make that doubly clear, she offered Rio a hand, though she clasped his forearm rather than shaking hands if he reciprocated.
Then she looked at the rest of the group and nodded.
"I'm Elizabeth Laskaris, clan Skellig of Atlantis," the warrior said. "You can call me Buffy. It's a nickname a friend gave me that I rather like. I've been tracking you for some time now. I was asked at Castle Refuge to come back you up in your mission. And since that mission puts you in the crosshairs of the Vampire Kingdoms..."
Buffy grinned, and her longbow dissolved into flecks of bright light that converged back onto her arm and settled into the tattooed image of the selfsame bow there.
"Well, I just couldn't say no."

Doc finds his forearm gripped in a strong grasp, and given a firm shake. Elizabeth nods slowly, looking him up and down.
"Draco Amicus," she says warmly. "I've heard the Clans are returning to Earth, but I hadn't heard or seen any of your people before. In the rolls, not much is written of you either."
She grins. "A mysterious man from a mysterious clan. Good to meet you. Better still to fight at your side. Welcome home, brother."
With a wave of her arm at the former battlefield, Buffy adds, "These people are with the Tomorrow Legion; a group dedicated to helping refugees from a local war and generally assisting people in the area protecting themselves.
